The U.S. Air Force is short on Fighter Pilots

This feels like to perfect time to pitch my Green Lantern concept to DC. An aging Hal Jordon attempting and failing to stay relevant in the world of fighter drones. It's backed by facts, you can't deny me DC!

As for the war hubbub, why would I, a pacifist, give a rat's butt about 'taking it to the enemy'?

I mean it makes sense. Why would you want to stay in when you can separate, and get a better paying job that is less hazardous.

2 come to mind:

1. Military Pension - 50% of your base rank pay paid out to you for the rest of your life after 20 years service or anytime after. Going down to 40 in 2018 and beyond, but will add a 401K-ish style plan for those not willing or unable to serve 20 years, rather than have it be an all or nothing.

2. Experience - Sure an Intel person for example might get a higher paying job as an IT tech as opposed to Military service. For some people however, constant cubicle life in a metropolitan area isn't exactly the most attractive thing in their best years. So Deployments on say, an aircrew assignment in an E-3, Hawkeye, P-3 or P-8 in foreign countries with differing cultures or experiences might be enough of an exotic sway for at least a few years to keep them in.

Been known for a long time that the US military will self destruct since the population is to fat to server

What about the other branches of the military? Are they affected as well?

Don't know about Army, but I assume they still have their Warrants in order to pilot the Choppers as I've not heard too much about them on this front.

The Navy and the Marine Corps are currently suffering from a lack of Fighter Jets, due to increasing accident rates because of the old age of the platforms. On Pilots they seem to be fine.

cant wait for the cruise missile to blow us away with Top Gun 2: Electric Migalow. That will surely spark interest again.

I have no idea how to fly, but fighter jets are awesome so I will do it. Seriously, hit up the celly airforce/navy, I am down 2 fly.

I remember Australia had a retention problem with fighter pilots.

Not really related to drone operations I guess.

The primary complaint was that they weren't getting flight time, compared to airline pilots. Even cargo plane, and ASW pilots, were getting far more hours than our FA18 pilots.

Junior, please.
If I was 10 years younger, 6 inches shorter, and American, I'd totally sign up.

As a 6'4" and a bit guy I'm officially too tall to be a fighter pilot. The dream was over before it started.

It's been like this for a very long time. The Air Force pays millions to train them and doesn't pay enough to keep them.

I'm British, "daft prick" is basically a verbal cuddle.

Really? Then my bad lol.

I am burnt, I should go to sleep as I seem to not be able to comprehend properly haha

EDIT: Glad you backed me up there, as many do not think of it beyond, "we have nukes so why we need an army?"

I'm not shocked. Retention is a bit of a problem across the board. Military retirement is a nice perk, but 20 years is a long time if you're unhappy the whole time and the potential for a better paycheck exists elsewhere.

Yeaaa....About that(Not too relevant nowadays but scary looking back at this)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolt_of_the_Admirals

The generals from the Army Air Force believed that with the increased destructive power they could now apply against potential enemies, big changes in the manner in which the nation was defended were warranted. With the advent of the nuclear age, the question arose as to what need existed for conventional military forces. The Air Force generals believed that much of the forces of the other services were unnecessary and could be cut.[3] They held that the future for national defense lay with a long-range bomber force carrying nuclear weapons. This limited and ultimately flawed view was accepted by the administration as being correct, and the meaningful existence of the other services came into jeopardy

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
There are much better pensions out there. Like I know a retired firefighter who gets 90% of his base pay. If he'd quit after 20 years then it would have been 60%.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Patlabor 1 IRL, OMG.

That robot is from japan and is an actual mech with cute little Japanese girl pilot. Its also fighting a giant American garbage truck looking mech sometime this year. We're getting a real small scale G Gundam going on soon hopefully.

This is indeed the time for Top Gun 2.

I'd doubt it unless it's corrected by Lasik or whatnot.

If I wasn't Canadian I'd be down, I love flying.

You can, just need contact lenses for corrected 20/20 vision.
If anything Lasik could lead to disqualification.

I've been in the Air Force for a few months now and of all the pilots I've met, I can't think of one that was disappointed that they were assigned to a fighter jet. I hear it's stressful as hell

Being a pilot in the Air Force used to be considered paid training for a job with an airline. With airline pilot pay and benefits being reduced I wonder how long this will still be the case.

Learn something new everyday. I always assumed being a pilot was one of those dream jobs that the Air Force and/or Navy had people lining up out the door to do.

Yessir retaining pilots has always been a challenge. And I reckon deploying to the Middle East with fucked up intel gets old after a while. Also should've never cancelled the F22, thanks politicians

When was the last time we had a movie about Air Combat? Was it Stealth?

Dear God! Don't let it be Stealth!

We really do need to get the romance back into air combat. Inspire some people.

I dreamed about the air force when I was a kid, but my health and eyes are garbage. :/

I'd do it for free. Too bad I'm way too tall, I could memorize the eye chart.

Don't even mind if I get shot down or crash from a mechanical failure. Probably way better than dying of old age.

To be fair, Anyone can line up to do a job.

Actually Qualifying for the job is a different beast entirely.
