The US PSP Launch

Argh PSPVideo9 is pissing me off. Ok, I've got a copy of the Batman Begins trailer that I want to put on my PSP. However, when I try to convert it, PSPVideo9 says "Transcode Failed - This video codec not supported" Anyone know why?

The file name is "batman.mov"

Is there something I don't know (can it not convert .mov files or something?)?

Nope, it can't (except maybe for a select few). You can try iPSP (which works), or find a program that will convert QT files to other formats like AVI.

OK, people have had time with both Lumines and Ridge Racer, if I am only gonna get one for now which one should I get?

I love them both. If you're only going to have 1, I'd get RR, but if you already have one of the racing games (Wipeout or NFS), I'd get Lumines.

Lumines. You are gonna play it forever.

I rented NFSU Rivals from gamefly and although I thought I would hate it, I really like it. I only played part 2 and now I know why I hated it, the open-endedness made it worst IMO. I like knowing my objective, doing the race, and upgrading, in that order. Also, I thought because of space issues, there wouldn't be many upgrades, I was way off, there is so much room for customization that no 2 cars will look alike once everything is unlocked. Its a deep game and I've been playing at least 7-8 hours and I'm not done with the novice races yet.

Well, some of my PSP stuff arrived (though not the PSP itself) - including the Exim screen protector. Any way of telling for sure if it's genuine? It's a Exim "Original Clear" protector, and it has pictures of some mobile phones on it, but a little sticker saying that it's for PSP. I did a google and I couldn't find any "original clear" PSP protectors on the exim site (just "ultra clear") so i'm beginning to wonder..

Unfortunately I'm not at home so I can't post up a picture of the packaging. Can anyone confirm if the description above matches their protector? With all the talk of fake Exim protectors from ebay, I don't want to use something with my PSP that could end up damaging it =/

Belkin makes great cables they're just ridiculously overpriced, however at 5.79 they can't be beat heh.

Damn, looks like they're out of stock now. They had them in stock last thurs when i ordered my Sony 512 stick, matter of fact i only bought the cable cause i happened to see it in the Also Purchased With This Item column when i got the stick :lol .

EXIM people told me there are pirates out there, not explicity PSP screen protector pirates though. I have investigated further my own screen protector and it is genuine... only that it was unfortunately a bad one with scratches and other imperfects.
So don't worry about your protector.
This is very important. You have to remove ALL dusts on the PSP.. otherwise it will develop air bubbles and that is very annoying. Here is what I would do, remove all dusts from the PSP with the cloth and/or scotch tape. Then remove the film protector on the screen protector, but don't remove it entirely.. just remove a few centimeters.. it is very important that no dust gets attached to the screen protector. gently apply the screen protector on the psp while removing the film protector. if you follow these procedures it should be quite easy to attach it. And the exim screen protector is very clear and you wont notice it being attached to the psp. whenever you want to remove the screen protector from the psp, use a bit of scotch tape attached to the screen protector edge and then gently pull the tape up.. the screen protector will follow the tape up.

I have no dust under my screen protector, only problem is that one corner of my screen protector is slightly bent and this causes air bubbles to develop there.. and there is no way to remove those airbubbles.. it's impossible.

I've been using the cable from my Creative Zen and the cable from my Sony Cyber-Shot with no problems. Of course if you have no cable already at all, this post isn't at all helpful.

Cheers for the reply and the guidance, I'll keep it in mind when applying mine!

Can I ask how you found out if yours was genuine?

Did yours have a picture of a PSP on the packaging, or just a sticker saying it was for PSP?

(yeah, sorry to focus on this so much...)

Mine had a PDA... and for PSP sticker.
It is not until very recently that they are selling the screen protectors with a PSP image on the cover.

edit/ pda-now verified my images I sent them and said they are genuine.

Cheers, I may send a pic of mine to them and see what they say. Mines not a PDA, but has a couple of mobile phones on it and the sticker. It's probably OK, I was assuming before that the "real" ones would have a PSP picture on them. Thanks again!

edit - one FINAL q (sorry): was yours "ultra clear" or "original clear"? Mine's original clear (SPOC), but I can't find mention of such on pda-now's site =/

Cheers. The only place google picks up mention of "original clear" exim protectors is ebay, which may not be a good sign :( Thanks for your help though, i'll mail pda-now about it and see what they say.

batteri questsion

at 93% charge level i have 5:18 hours

is that correct?

should i not have more?

It'll vary based on usage. eg if you play a UMD movie, or a power-hungry game, it'll extrapolate that 7% used across the rest of the battery. If you listen to mp3s from the memory card with the screen off, it'll report a much longer time.

Just relax and get used to how much life you normally get out of it with your usage patterns.

The plastic that covers the area where the USB port is weak. :/ While on either side it seems to be clipped onto something, where the USB port is it doesn't seem attached to anything. I can almost pull up that part of the plastic. I guess it's not that big of a deal, but I'm worried everytime I take out the USB cord that it's going to break it. :/ Does anyone else have this problem?

Yup. According to battery life bar I had 20% left. Booted up Wipeout Pure and it couldn't load my saves, like it locked up... then it shut it down itself.. Battery was very weak. Interesting that it also had problems reading Untold Legends maybe 30 minutes prior to that problem. A weak battery seems to cause weird problems.

its been 5 days since i got my PSP and i have just decided to order 2 PSP´s from the states with 3 copies of Ridge racer so i can play against my friends :)

Ridge racer does support wifi play right?

I'm having trouble with my USB connecting to the PSP. I plug it in, transfer a file, but if the file is larger than, say about 3 mb, the USB disconnects and the only thing that is left on the PSP is a corrupted file. How do I fix this? Anyone?

YES! My PSP arrived while I was at work. The first thing I did when i got it out of the box was try and put the screen protector on it (yeah, I'm having faith that it's not a fake), but I didn't exactly do a perfect job of it. No air bubbles, but there are tiny little bits of dust underneath it, primarily around the top right corner that I was holding when applying, which makes it obvious that it's there. I may try later, but it's tough doing that! It'll do for now. I have it charging now..hopefully it won't take too long.

I did notice one tiny tiny little flaw in the screen though - a tinchy little "pinprick" dent in the top right corner. It's really so small though. It can't be seen from most angles, and in most lighting conditions..(I didn't see it at all under close inspection the first few times).

Lord though, it is one piece of hot sex. Smaller than I thought too, which is a good thing.

Also - the pouch that comes with it...safe to use if you have a screen protector on? Or does it scratch the PSP controls surface also? It's actually a nice little pouch, despite being lightweight..

It will be fine. I use the pouch even without any sort of screen protector. The system is a lot more durable than people have suggested. At first, I was very careful and used the packing material when storing it in the pouch, but I discovered that it is not necessary. I've carried the PSP around in my pocket in the pouch with no screen protector and it has been fine. The only thing that really holds true is how easily is fingerprints (though I never touch the screen area)...

Enjoy it!

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
I think people who complain that pouch scratched their screen have been having those little "pinprick" dents on their screen from day one without noticing them (they are really easy to go unnoticed) - until one day they would think pouch somehow made them. Most PSPs I've held in my hads so far have had 1-2 of those little dents in acrylite that covers the whole upper surface.

My PSP got scratched by the pouch, that's a fact. The inside had two hard nodules that scratched my screen, they looked like melted synthetic fabric so I bet on bad manufacturing or terrible luck.

Same here, I tried transfering the Episode III trailer posted a few pages down and it either says error or it freezes up after the file transfer, then the file does not appear on the memory stick but the 20mb are used up.

OK, spent a couple of hours with my little bundle o' joy and:

- wow, the screen is THAT good

- wow, the opening of spiderman is the perfect demo of the screen

- wow, the pink actually looks good

- wow, I have 4 or 5 dead pixels :( However, they are white, so it could be worse, and only one of them is in anyway noticeable (and even then, not as noticeable as i had feared hearing stories from the web). They're not noticeable at all on the menu or games (probably because of their colour), but i did pick them in spiderman 2, with the darker scenes.

- wow, i suck at wipeout

- holy f*** wow, lumines is the most awesome thing! played for what turned out to be an hour and a half, but it seemed like minutes. The first song..just wow. The sound quality is excellent across the system, though Lumines makes it shine. Though I did note that the PSP is a little "low on volume" for my tastes, as others suggested previously. It's fine when i turn it up, but it'd be nicer if i could keep it midway and still enjoy it perfectly.

Yes, this might seem old to those of you who've had psps a while now, but i felt the need to share :)

Got my USB cable and am learning how to put movies and junk on my PSP. As a test I decided to stick some sample porno movies on it...

...something tells me I'm going to need a 1 gig card soon

Well, I received my EXiM SPUC Saturday, and decided to put it on today. I'm pretty sure it is a legit one, I didn't have any issues getting the sticker to peel the back off, etc.

Here's my 2 cents.

For me, what a waste of money. The problem is not the protector itself, which is VERY clear and practically invisible if applied in perfect conditions. The problem is trying to install the damn thing.

First, I tried to clean my PSP of dust. The screen as you know is a dust magnet. I would get it completely clean after several wipes and then before I could get the protector positioned and start to put it on a couple more motes would fall on it. I'd wipe these and start again. I did my best, followed all the instructions, did not touch the backing, applied it directly from the backing to the PSP in one smooth motion, etc. Unfortunately, I am not the most sure-of-hand person in the world, and the protector was ever so slightly askew and bumped against the raised section at the bottom with the start, select, and function keys. I could live with that, though.

Of course, several pieces of dust made it under there anyway, leaving air bubbles. I tried to get these out without removing the protector to no avail. There's two dust particles actually under the PSP screen cover, but there were about five between the EXiM and the PSP. This was unacceptable. I was going to try the remove and re-apply, and to EXiM's credit there was no residue whatsoever. But then I discovered that after removing the protector, using tape or what have you to remove said dust, the protector wasn't exactly clear anymore. I tried using water, as they suggest, but this only served to further cloud the protector in certain areas. I threw my expensive slip of plastic in the trash and resigned myself to simply caring for the existing screen. So far, the Pelican flip-up screen armor thingy has worked like a charm so that's what I'm going to continue using.

The moral of the story is that a) find a dust-free environment to perform the install in, hopefully you or a relative works in an electronics company with a "clean room", and b) this is a one shot deal. If it doesn't look perfect the first time you put it on, either learn to live with it or throw it out. Taking it off will only make it look worse.

Yeah, I installed an afterburner light into my GBA several years ago using the "cheap-mans clean-room" method. Basically, run straight hot water for a while with the bathroom door closed, then when it all fogs up, you go in and do your work dust-free. My afterburner install was nearly perfect :D
