the weekly "How is this HDTV?" thread

Thanks a million. I think my old set is dying so I have to buy a new one. I've got my choices for a new TV narrowed down to this and the 34-inch Sony XBR960. For me, it's very important that my new TV have a quality similar to a CRT. There is a "grainy" quality to many other TV technologies (like DLP projection) that I don't like. This TV is for my bedroom and I sit relatively close to the set so I want optimal image quality.

I will be interested to know what you think if you ever hook up your PS2. This set will be the only set I use for PS1 and PS2 gaming, and very few of these games make use of progressive scan. I also play a lot of 2D games like Street Fighter and Final Fantasy chronicles, so I am hoping for a CRT-like image quality here as well. I will probably ask the Circuit City guys to hook up a PS2 so I can make sure. Have you tried any games yet on the Cube that don't use progressive can?

Finally, how is the sound output from the normal TV speakers? (A surround sound system seems like a no-brainer for this set though.) Thanks again.

As far as 2D games are concerned - the only one I have played on this TV is Alien Hominid - but that was in progressive scan - it looked awesome. But as far as old school 2d games like FF and Street Fighter, haven't tested any yet. I'll try to get around to hooking up my modded xbox and play some old arcade, snes and genny later today.

The sound is very good - especially for a flat panel tv - much better then what I've heard come out of my brothers plasma (philips). But obviously a surround sound system would sound much better - but if the tv speakers are your only option (like me) then I don't think there is much better out there on a flat panel set.

As far as that grainy look on DLP and even some rear projection LCDs I've seen - there is none of that going on - I'm in the same boat as you, can't stand it and it's why I never ran out and bought these huge sized DLP sets like most of my friends did - the picture quality can't hold a candle to my CRT - until I saw the Bravia. :D

Have you tried the avs forum? They have a lot of good things to say about it as well.

What you are saying is very encouraging. I have been reading about television sets all day, including browsing avsforum.com. The Bravia seems to not suffer from issues common to other LCDs, like ghosting. There is one negative user review at circuitcity.com, but I don't think I trust that clown. Have you noticed any dead pixels on your set?

I'm still going back and forth between the Bravia and Sony XBR960. With the XBR960 I'll get probably the best image quality possible at half the price. The only drawbacks will be its massive 200 lb. bulk and I will have to buy a new (study) TV stand. I'm also not looking forward to lugging it upstairs. :lol

If the image quality of the Bravia is as close to modern CRTs as you say, then I'll probably go for it. At 40 inches, the image size of both widescreen and 4:3 games will be more than adequate. Since Sony is phasing out CRTs, maybe it's time to get with the program. The design of the Bravia is hot hot hot.

It will probably take me a few more trips to Circuit City, Goodguys, etc. to decide for sure. I look forward to hear what you have to say about your modded Xbox games.
