The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

Not open for further replies.
What would you recommend, Brandon?

Hard to say. My favorites are 4 and 6-12 with the exception of 11. With how archaic most of the FF games are now compared to modern gameplay, again, it's hard to say which one would be good for you to start with. I mean any of them would be better than starting with 13.

So... taking that into consideration, maybe 10? It has an extremely fast moving battle system and while the game isn't nearly as "open" as some of the earlier ones, it's less restrictive than 13. Of course, if you're the type of gamer who has patience and with the desire to discover the installments that a lot of people tend to favor, it would be 4, 6, and 7.

Also I guess FF10 is being either redone or being released in HD, at some point in time anyway... so you might be well off to wait for that.

If you want something from Rockstar that Rockstar has no intention of offering, or attempt to secure exclusivity of any kind, the price you pay is high. Too high, in my opinion. Microsoft spent a completely absurd amount of money just to have timed exclusivity of two expansion packs.

Every cent Nintendo would spend getting anything from Rockstar I'd rather see spent on creating new games internally, or reaching out to independent devs to fund new projects. GTA V would be nice for Nintendo, but I'm not interested in Nintendo obtaining the best market position or playing the sales game. I'm interested in them making good games that I love to play. The reason I buy their consoles. And Rockstar don't fit anywhere in that vision.

I don't disagree with you on a personal level. That being said, Nintendo is a business and GTA is good for business. They need to manage their company in a way that makes them successful. A franchise like GTA helps them with brand perception in a way no other piece of software could.

Personally, i think Nintendo of America might offer to publish GTAV on Wii U in NA. You (R*) develope it, finish it, port it and we (NoA) will foot the bill for marketing, packaging and distribution on Wii U.

1) So.. how much will the Wii U cost?
€279,-/$279,- without a pack-in but with pre-installed, multiplayer focused minigames.

2) And when will the Wii U's Launch Day be?
Late October - early November

3) Your #1 Desired Launch Day Game?
Mario Paint. It just makes sense. I'd love to see Nintendo EAD try their hand at a new, full-fledged IP but I feel the times we get those at launch are far behind us. Besides the obvious choice, Pikmin 3, I have a hard time coming up with launch software from Nintendo's teams. I don't think a 2D Mario will be there with New Super Mario Bros 3DS confirmed for this year and it's obvious Super Smash Brothers won't be there either. I'm hoping for a Wave Race sequel. And maybe something from the Tokyo team, although I doubt it'll be Mario.

4) Any pleasant third-party surprises for the Wii U?
I'm expecting solid support by Activision, EA, Ubi, Take Two and what's left of THQ, but nothing more than ports with some added bells and whistles. The real third party surprises need to come from Japan and I'm guessing Level 5 will be delivering some. I'm going to go out on a limb and predict a Fantasy Life title that ties the 3DS game with a WiiU game. Nintendo will make a big deal out of Lego City Stories. That will be deserved.

5) Any predictions of media criticisms for Nintendo's behaviour/substance during E3 Week?
Media will be surprisingly positive. The biggest complaint will probably be the lack of 3rd party surprises.

6) What'll be your preferred food & drink of choice during the Nintendo Conference?
Just some tea.

7) How long will the Nintendo Conference go on, and what'll be the breakdown on time spent between Wii U and 3DS?
It'll be about an hour long and start out with twenty minutes about the 3DS with some announcements for western release and some new games shown. The next fifteen minutes will be used to show of the various aspects of the WiiU hardware, with ten minutes to show 3rd party games and ten minutes for first party offerings. The last five minutes will be dedicated to surprise game which we won't see or hear from again for another year or two.

8) Predict: rate the Wii U Launch lineup from 1 (worst) to 10 (best).
About a 6. Heavy on the impressive 3rd party games, but no real Nintendo scorchers. Basically like the 3DS launch, but with a more diverse 3rd party line-up.

9) Predict: any final hardware revelations?
Major redesign for the actual hardware. Will incorporate a charger stand for the tablet.

10) Predict: any super-special applications that Nintendo's gonna spring on us?
As I mentioned before: not doing something with the Mario Paint license would be a crime against humanity.

11) Predict: With BP now gone, who's the Nintendo fan most likely to be banned from NeoGAF during E3 Week?
I have no idea.

12) Wild-card prediction: anything else?
No NFC announcements from Nintendo itself.

That's a good point. It'll at least look pretty good done up in HD, so I'll definitely look forward to that. I might pick one up on PSN though in the mean time. Thanks for the advice.

I hope the WiiU launches the day before Skyfall. 6 years ago after I got out of Casino Royale I went straight to the Wii launch lineup and hours of that wait was spent with me talking to other people in line who had also just seen Casino Royale so we just talked about how fucking awesome it was until the systems went on sale.

No problem. 6 was the one that got me into FF and RPG's in general, so I have to give a shout out to that one as well. But, you know, that was something like 17 years ago.

So Sproing is on board, eh. Nothing spectacular really, but they developed most of Cursed Mountain for Wii. That games was published by Deep Silver which happens to have several Wii U titles in development (one from Techland). Could it be an HD port or a sequel to Cursed Mountain perhaps? I doubt it, but seeing as that title received mixed or average reviews (hence, not a "bad" game) I would go with that concept if developing something for Wii U. It can't be worse than their casual titles anyway.

Torus Games I wouldn't really put any emphasis on. Their best known game is Monster Jam (multi-platform) and from what I've heard it's nothing special.

So, to summarize, the shovelware developers we've got onboard are Funbox Media Ltd., Maximum Family Games, LLC, Sproing, Torus and the Mexican studio wsippel mentioned.

I don't disagree with it being 'good business', well, not aggressively. But I don't want to see it happen because it is, what I consider, a waste of Nintendo's money. Money that could be better spent elsewhere.

And as I said in the last thread, I think what Nintendo needs more than anything, in terms of attacking the Western marketing, is new IPs that define their system. They need to do what Microsoft did with both Halo and Gears of War: reach out to independent Western developers to have them co-develop a Nintendo branded Wii U exclusive game/franchise that appeals to the West.

Nintendo's biggest problem with the West isn't just a lack of third party support. It's that they don't really have any internally owned IPs that they can market to this audience. Ports keep momentum, and stuff like GTA V would be a boon, but they need to start elsewhere. They need a reason for those core gamers to pick up the Wii U in the first place, over their Xbox 360s and PlayStation 3s, so that when GTA V rolls around they already have the platform.

Unless it's time exclusive, and that's where I'd go so far to say Nintendo is doing bad business. The price Nintendo would have to pay for a time exclusive major GTA V release on a new console would be so insane they might as well fund five other high profile Western targetted games instead.

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
There are several game franchises that regularly outsell Final Fantasy. Any of them (well, except the Nintendo ones, obviously) being announced as exclusive to Wii U would be a larger megaton.

Welcome to not-the-1990s. ;)

Perfectly said. It'll be a boring, gruelling generation if this isn't in their agenda.

I definitely agree with you. At first I believed moneyhatting for the game was the way to go, but I'd rather see some new relationship with Western developers. If we see something along the lines of Halo or Gears from Nintendo teaming up with a Western dev, that would be more awesome than GTA V. I think they're kind of heading that route with Retro (if rumors of them developing a new ip aimed at PS360 crowd is true).

I still think the Wii U will need GTA V, but if they have to moneyhat for it, it might not be worth the trouble.

Some kind of Ontario-based dev, most likely.

I'm guessing Silcon Knights developing a game published by Nintendo for Wii U.

I'd probably add Behavior Interactive and Blitz Game Studios to the shovelware list as well.

Torus Games does contract work as well, mostly(?) audio related - they even worked for Nintendo in the past.

Wasn't the MS deal "only" a loan? I'm not really saying that Nintendo should attempt exclusive content, just that they get the game on their console(similar to the rumoured EA deal where they guaranteed to cover dev costs during the GC days). Also I tend to spend a lot of time in GTA games looking at the mini-map, a larger one in my lap would increase my enjoyment of the game immensely.

As for the sales game, it is important for the Wii U do to well to increase the amount of 3rd party titles in the future(I realise you have a PC for those games, but that isn't a realistic option for me).

That is an... interesting position to take.

I'd imagine any money Nintendo puts towards third party incentives isn't necessarily being drained from development budgets. It would be sort of like wanting games to not have marketing budgets because that, too, would take away precious money from developing the best game possible.

If Nintendo can secure exclusives like GTA V, it would stand to reason that their install base would go up, and with this install base they will gain 1) more third party titles, meaning more variety and 2) more revenue meaning more money to spend on game development.

It's fine to say you don't care about sales and market position, but such factors could end up limiting the variety and quality of the games made if the market realities bear down on the creative side. If securing a 3rd party exclusive would guarantee stability and generate more revenue in licensing for new games at the expense, then it's better in the long run to go for the exclusive at the expense of one or two first party games immediately.

One more thing: As far as I can tell, Nintendo hired a lot of developer support staff in recent months. Low level programmers, middleware experts and such.

Also, the technology team at NoA (Steve Rabin and some low level optimization gurus) recently designed and patented a new type of assembly editor and debugger.

All this conversation just makes me believe that Retro is making a new IP, and that ED 2 is in development. Both likely mature games that will interest the core gamers.

If Nintendo needs to moneyhat just to get ports of key multiplatform titles like GTAV, it's what they should be doing. Not at the expense of original first-party software aimed at the dudebro/core audience, of course, but I don't think it'd be a zero-sum game.

Something tells me that a pure GTA V exclusive would just have the effect of pissing people off and directing that anger at Nintendo. Just my intuition, though.

What would they do burn, down their offices?
I can see a timed exclusive possibly, no chance of a full on exclusive. Actually timed exclusives tend to simply be announced as exclusives, so forget that.

I would argue that the money required to secure GTA V as an exclusive would be better spent investing in new IPs that appeal to the same market, and expand Nintendo's portfolio. I'd also argue that doing this, and doing it well, would significantly increase Nintendo's market position, and thus greater revenue, to the point where the likelihood of GTA V arriving with minimal effort from Nintendo, if any at all, would be high. If Rockstar smell money from an audience that will buy GTA V on a Nintendo platform, they will send it there.

I don't mean to imply money spent on GTA V would 'drain' development budgets, just that the money could be spend on expanding development budgets. It's all investments, and I believe with the launch of a new console there are better investments than moneyhatting Rockstar.

We definitely can agree on that. I also think Nintendo is making internal development decisions to address this. Whatever Retro's working on. NST's ressurection. Funding Eternal Darkness 2 (maybe).

I also think we are going to see some of their legacy franchises retooled more for the West.

Another Metroid with the badass action of M:OM, atmosphere of the Prime games and no Sakamoto bullshit story.

Even Zelda. I think they'll build the next console game with more "Western" sensibilities about it. I'm not really sure how to explain it, other than point to the E3 demo. Dark, forbodding and epic in scale. None of the color, cuteness or whimsy of Skyward Sword or Wind Waker

I guess I should clarify that by saying they'd do something idiotic like petitioning Rockstar, even over just a timed-exclusive.

I know it's just sore butts, but I don't like to underestimate hardcore whiners. Too often the industry bends over.

Maybe that's true, but remember that one of the most common criticisms of Nintendo is that they don't "give a damn about third parties." And if Nintendo, quite visibly, spends more of their money making and marketing their own games and not "helping" third parties out, then that image will persist, even if they make a market leading console, it seems.

This is basically what I want the Wii U's library to look like early on. I think it would put so many core gamer's minds to ease if it were. They really have this holiday for the taking too; nearly everything that looked promising has been delayed to Q1 2013 and beyond. This is the time to strike and gain the core market they desire.

I really do love Sony's strategy of creating new IP's for western audiences like God of War, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, KillZone, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, The Last of Us, etc.

Nintendo needs to follow that strategy to grab a bigger market share in the west. They need to take advantage of Retro Studios and Monster Games and use them to create new IP's/franchises.

I am on the same train of thought that EatChildren is on. Nintendo needs to have a stronger in-house development presence in Western markets. Expanding their existing teams at NST and Retro is a no brainer, and is already being done (at least in Retro's case, not sure about NST).

That said even after expanding at NST and Retro Nintendo would still lack the development muscle they need in western countries. Therefore I think it would be wise to offer buyouts of talented mid-tier studios, such as Gearbox or Next Level Games (NLG). Gearbox would fill the FPS niche that Nintendo very much needs to address and NLG is already very familiar with Nintendo, so it would be an easy transition for them. I'm sure there are several other studios that Nintendo could target as well, any suggestions?

I don't know, I'm hopeful coming into this E3, to say the least. All the rumors seem to be positive for the most part, and I'm glad that Nintendo seems to be listening to fans, and willing to be flexible. Them just changing to analog sticks is more then enough to put me in a good pre-E3 mood.

I will be super happy if we get two Nintendo made launch games directed at core gamers, pretty happy if it's just one. A good OS and onlie infrastructure would go a long way as well for me.
