The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

I feel a little sorry for that QA tester if he's been fired. I'm pretty sure we had someone claim analogue sticks before his picture, and we'd likely have the patents showing the layout had been changed anyway; his picture gave us no information we wouldn't already have just days later.

I feel sorry for him too as if anything, he generated even more hype and attention but obviously, it's the principle of the matter and you have to deter it from happening again.

Haha.. thanks, and no worries. I'd be intoxicated with you if I weren't on call this weekend. But I have some goodies set-aside for E3 Week, oh yes.. we're gonna have a grand time!

Hmmm, interesting idea. Might evolve my Nintendo Direct bingo into Media Briefing drinking game.

If she was talking about the gameplay, I kinda-sorta agree, though not to that extent. I found the first Mario Galaxy so incredibly easy it was boring. I understand it gets a lot more challenging once you beat the game, but it was just a long slog to get through it, I had stop when I was about 3/4 of the way done.

I found Mario Sunshine a whole lot more fun, and liked most of its music better too (it seemed to fit the game better).
I get what she was saying as well. She's still dumb for making it so definitive and exaggerating but Nintendo does tend to do that. 3D Land on 3DS is another example. PAINFULLY easy game, but the post game stuff was great.

The only saving grace before you get to the good stuff is that it can be pretty fun.

Weren't you supposedly PM'd something you were gonna save for right before E3 and swore on your beloved doggy's life to keep it 'till then, is that what you're referring to here? ;)

I'm not referring to the unopened inbox secret(s) in that post above (I'm referring to drinking on that day - haha!), but yeah, I still plan on sharing whatever's been sent to me on Nintendo's conference day. :)

I hacked into his account.

It's Viewtiful Joe in Smash Brothers Wii U and he has haptic-exclusivity to his character.

That would be cool. Marina from Mischief Makers would also be a perfect fit as a Smash Fighter and I think there'd be an at least slight possibility of it happening if it weren't for the rights being in limbo between Treasure and Square-Enix.

Ohhhhhh. :D Early in the morning or as the conference is happening if you don't mind me asking? :)

I haven't opened my special inbox message(s) yet. I might do 'em early in the morning so that it's out of the way before E3 starts. One thing - I've gotta check the wording on my initial oath, just to make sure I don't violate it with the timing of my actions that day. I'm not sure if I swore to open special messages during the conference or just on the day of the conference.

So what are your guys hopes for Wii U's launch?

I'd be all over Pikmin 3 and/or Super Mario Bros Mii being there at launch, along with ACIII if the added features are worth it.

Possibly would consider Darksiders II, but I haven't played the first.

You about summed up my interests but I'd add Killer Freaks there as well if it turns out good.

I tired of guessing what it could be , but Iwata made it sound like he's hopeful that Nintendo's own Wii U software will be evergreen.

The first Darksiders is a fun Zelda clone with interesting artwork. I don't consider it an A tier title but it's well worth a play through. Pretty sure it's cheap now if you want to give it a go.

Aliens CM is on my short list as well, Gearbox is generally a quality developer and it's a damn good license so...

Assassin's Creed3 will be my first in that series if it reviews well. Love the premise.

I watched a few Pikmin videos earlier today and remembered how much I love the gameplay elements of it. It also reminded me of how very stressful the games can be.

Although Pikmin 3 has to be THE game of launch for me, I'm actually hoping that there's a Mario game in some shape or form on Launch Day, just to whet my appetite. Assuming a weekend or weekend-adjacent launch day of the week, my vacation is going to be between 9 and 12 days long, so I'll play the Mario game first for a few days and then still have time to play Pikmin after that.

As far as third parties go, Darksiders has to be near/at the top of my wish list, although like you I really, really wish they'd consider bringing Darksiders 1 over to the U for fanbase-building and continuity's sake. (I have series OCD: if I've played 1, 2, and 3 and then 4 is not available on either of my platforms - Nintendo/PC - then I won't go any further. Weird, I know..)

Yeah, Darksiders goes for about $14.99-$19.99. I could probably find it cheaper online.

AC is my favourite new IP of the generation, possibly my favourite games all generation. I'm really interested to see how the integrate the UPad with that series.

I would honestly be shocked if Pikmin 3 wasn't a launch title or at least launch window.

SMBMii would be a perfect pack-in game imo. It's using an existing engine and assets it would be pretty cheap to develop.

I'll be getting ACIII on Wii if they display the map all the time on the subscreen with the ability to just tap it to set waypoints. Also the ability to bring up the information that pops up when you meet a new person or visit a new place on the subscreen would be pretty nice.

EDIT: Oh, and I need to finally finish Darksiders I I've had it on Steam forever.

That's something that's always bothered me. I look at the map frequently and hate pausing the game and looking back at the map every 30 seconds. Would be nice if it was always on the UPad controller.

Hopefully they at least quick'n dirty port Darskiders 1 to Wii U maybe as a downloadable title. If the price is right it could definitely move some units. I recommend you just nab it on PC though. Like I said, well worth a run through.

Darksiders II is on my Wii U purchase list for sure. Having a subscreen for the map and inventory is something any ARPG/ open world title can clearly benefit from.

A much ridicule as it's gotten, having a subscreen with a map on it is something I'm really looking forward to in any game that's open world and/or requires exploration as a core mechanic.

Started with Castlevania DoS, have wanted it ever since.

Wha? Why would that ever happen? A character from an obscure 15 year old title?

Unless they also made a Mischief Makers sequel, in which case, yes please.

I wonder how many WiiU will be sold in the US by Jan 2013 and how that will guide 3rd Party fence sitters

What would be a good number for you guys?
even though they go hand in hand, I think software sales are more important than hardware sales. If AC3 and Blops2 and whatever else sell a lot, that will convince the 3rd party fence sitters. If the WiiU sells a shitton yet nothing but nintendo games are selling a lot then...yeahhhh.

It doesn't matter if the game is (almost) 15 years old and probably won't get a sequel, was just saying she'd be an awesome Smash fighter. Just random fan dreamin.' Treasure has a very good relationship with Nintendo, if the rights weren't a problem she'd at least be an assist item (like S&P assist in Melee).

Edit: Good grief this thread has really slowed down. :(

The Wii U.. will be an interesting system to watch.. since like the Wii.. it disturbs the normal bell curve of progress

Its a system coming near the end of a cycle.. but only just passing it by a hair.. so a lot of games.. are still going to work on your current system..

Curious to see/hear what 3rd parties expect from first year sales

This is Smash Bros.! It thrives on characters from obscure, 15 year old titles!

not that it would ever happen; more likely, we might see one of the S&P dudes

I've felt the same way throughout the years playing the DS. Inventory management, on screen maps, menus, etc are actually pretty nice to have on a separate screen.

the uPad is in a lose lose situation. If most games just stick to inventory management and maps (which I think is awesome), people will go LOLWHERE IS THE INNOVATION, THIS IS IT?!?!

Then if it starts getting used in a large variety of other ways everyone will be like GIMMICKS GIMMICKS GIMMICKS.

I'd be happy with just maps/inventory/other convenient information on the fly.

I don't understand why anyone would deride that use of the pad's touchscreen. Have they never even held a DS before?

Even more irksome to me is when people allege that somehow "looking down" will preclude keeping focused on the action on the TV. This is ridiculous in so many ways, I don't know where to begin.

I don't think it is a lose, lose situation. The Utab is just allows developers to have another possible outlet for creativity, while still having a traditional controller to work with. We are not substituting a traditional controller to have the Utab ala the wiimote.

I just mean it in terms of the way the gaming media treats it in articles and whatnot. Perception wise by the 'professionals' it'll be either or.

Pikmin 3.

I rank Pikmin 1+2 up there with Melee as Nintendo's best games for the GC era. Can't wait to see where the franchise goes.

Other than that, I want to be surprised. Part of the reason I revere Pikmin 1 and 2 is because they were so fresh. I hope there's something new, whether it's shallow fun like Wii Sports bowling or a deeper experience like Mario Galaxy. I want at least one thing that will jump out at me.

I think the game that will not be on WiiU I will regret the most is Tomb Raider
so this is why I want to see some really good hardware sales maybe it will be too tempting next year not to port it over

Its hard to see those two games sell a ton on a brand new console

you need a good 2 million WiiU sold just to get those numbers expected from Blops2
this is going to be really interesting to watch

on one hand PS3/360 has that base covered and should be able to cover all AC3/Blops2 sales alone so those fans would not need a new hardware for those games

and on the other you have a spanking new launch hardware and these same titles at launch is crazy... I myself would have to pick up AC3/Blops2 with my WiiU just to show support

this will be very fun times :)

I was worried Nintendo doing this alone would be a bad thing but if the WiiU turns out to be the hot thing this holiday alone it may be harder to ignore they build up of hype for this hardware

I want to see what excuses 3rd Parties throw our way
