the wipeout pure thread

Personally, I am looking forward to the PS3 version when they REALLY revolutionize the series. One of the better PSP games, but not worth it to me. btw, the framerate in the videos seems pretty solid.

I love this game! But man, the AI becomes mega cheap and predictable at flash class and above.

First lap - if you boost at the line, everyone will pass you before you're halfway done with the lap. Possible to get to about 6th by the end of this lap.
Second/Third Lap - You can make it to 4th most of the time. Sometimes 3rd.
Next-to-Last Lap - Most of the time you'll make 2nd. Sometimes 1st.
Last Lap - If you didn't make first yet, You'll come up on the guy who is 1st and have to fight him for it. If you make any mistakes at all, you're not getting a gold. If you started off this lap in 1st, the 2nd place craft will magically pass you near at the end of the lap. If you don't have a boost or manage to nail them with a weapon, you get silver.

I've lost count of the number of times the above has happened to me. It's frustrating as shit! I understand the desire to have challenging AI, but damn. I know when I'm doing poorly and it doesn't bother me to get silvers then. But when I'm kicking ass and the AI just flies by me at the end... not so happy. I hate having to get lucky to win the race when I have the track down perfect.

Man this game rules. Auricom forever, baby.

This sounds almost exactly like WOXL/WO 2097 AI, which I personally hated (the AI that is, not the game).

I haven't been playing WO:Pure yet, so I hadn't noticed, but this bums me out. Unlike most people, I consider WOXL the weakest of the first three Wipeouts (although the prettiest).

OTOH, I enjoyed the hell out of it depite the AI wonkiness.

These kinds of controls are what made Wipeout stand out and feel so good to play :).

The first two Wipeout games were GREAT :D.
It's been a little over a year since i played the first Wipeout, but it feels a bit floatier than that. i don't mind the floatiness that much, but the odd physic gaffes and cheesy/brutal AI are annoying. i got eliminated IN THE F*CKING AIR by a CPU quake after having made a jump. i was about to do a barrel roll and speed into the finish line, in first place no less.

All in all, i'm extremely pleased with WOP. As cool as Ridge Racers and Lumines looked, Wipeout was the one game that made me HAVE to have a PSP. i can't wait to find someone to race against.

IGN is doing something special with their video captures off the PSP - they clearly have a knack for getting the best quality PSP vids right now.

IMHO - there is absolutely no way those IGN Wipeout PSP videos are better than Kikizo's Ridge PSP videos. :D

If you can only get one racer, you really need to get Ridge, IMO. You can always come back to the others later. They're not going anywhere... :)

Agree 100%. If you ask me Ridge is in a league of its own. Wipeout is just not as good. And from brief time with NFS, it seemed ... well, shit.

I'm getting pissed off with the AI in pure now. Really pissed off.
How come they always manage to drop a bomb when you're right on their tail? This happens at every level too... the way that everyone overtakes you even when you do a boost start is really lame too. But it's wipeout. I'll live with it :)

If you guys are having trouble with the higher classes, I urge you to play the zones and get golds on all 4 zones. You get a vehicle unlocked name "Zone" and it's awesome. It has low shields though so I hope you're skilled enough to go through laps without hitting walls in time trial. You'll still end up absoring a lot of power ups though after getting attacked and all

Now at 88 golds (master rank). Tackling single races in phantom class before even attempting tournaments...

Man, I'm jealous of all of you... Wipeout Pure!

I LOVE the Wipeout series (minus Fusion of course). God how I wish this (and Lumines) were on PS2 as I won't have the money for a PSP for a long time.

Even more restricting is the fact that I'm convinced that Sony will release sturdier/stronger/better battery PSPs in the future.

But after downloading the soundtrack (thank you Aoi and Argyle!!!), I just don't care!

I wish I was in high school again so I could play a friend's PSP!

Okay, I must be getting old or something - I blew through WipeoutXL no problem, but I'm still struggling with the Rapier class races in Pure. The one that's really kicking my ass is the second track in the beta group - the one with the 120 degree turn (which I can do) followed by the series of quick left/rights (which slow me down every time). It seems like when I use the airbrakes, I lose too much speed.

Who here uses dual airbrakes, and who uses the single airbrake setting? I'm using dual b/c it's what I'm used to from XL. Should I switch? Is the "slide left/right" control useful?

Also, anyone have a preferred ship class? I'd use Feisar except it's way too slow. I've been using Harimau instead...

I'm using dual airbrakes with the Zone vehicle. And let me tell you, that track on Rapier class is a BITCH. Took me like 20 retries last night getting a gold medal for single race on that track. For the hair pin, I just let go of acceleration and hold R trigger to lean in the turn. You have to do it at the right time though or you'll hit the wall...takes practice

Man, when I got that gold last night, I must have been .001 seconds ahead of the 2nd place guy. It was literally a tie and I was relieved when it said I earned gold.

I use Harimau and the single airbrake controller setting. I've found the quick slide left/right thing handy a few times, useful to knock an opponent off the edge of a track in rare instances as well F-Zero style.

I'm still using dual, but you can still slide by double tapping the shoulder buttons...

thanks for the advice... sounds like I just need to practice more. Damn my need for instant gratification... :)

In any case, this game more than makes up for Fusion.

Yea, the Zone ship rules all. Haven't even thought of using something else since I unlocked it.

Incredibly dumb question time... what's the difference between single and dual airbrake?

Dual: L and R buttons control the airbrakes on their respective sides, like WipeoutXL.
Single: R button + R pad for right airbrake, R button + L pad for left airbrake.

Interesting.... so the right trigger plus whichever way you are steering activates that respective airbrake in single mode.... hmmm I'm so use to Dual I don't know if I could play single... but I'll definitely have to try it now... thanks.

I couldn't stand single airbrake. It's like going from manual to automatic transmission. Dual airbrakes all the way! Besides, I never used the slide move thingy

I'm nearly finished in 100%'ing this game. About 121 golds, rank: junkie :D

Out of curiousity, what's you time spent looking at stats? :lol

Dammit I've just about had it with this game. It's like they didn't bother to tweak the phantom class at all. The vehicles go so fast that if you use the boost and achieve a high speed while in the air, your vehicles will often go upside-down and crap, wasting precious seconds AND puts you back like 40 meters behind as if you fell of the track. I just went from 2nd place to 6th place. Dammit. I don't know if they did this in purpose to force you to slow down. Phantom class kills you on the 2nd track in beta league too, with the elevations and tight turns of the track. I can't count how many times I flew off the track cause I hit a boost zipper

And the timer for my stats is actually only under a minute, the progress screen is in a seperate screen and it doesn't track time for that

As much as the slight framerate dips in singleplayer don't bother me at all, I just finished my first 7 player Ad Hoc Multiplayer Tournament (Ascension, Venom class - I won :) ). Any time there was more than one other ship on the screen, my framerate was sub-20s. at that point, the gameplay does start to suffer.

I'm assuming it would be no better if we had infrastructure, but who knows. Anyone tried a 6+ player game with a wireless network?

^ what was your battery life like at this point?
We noticed in ad-hoc Ridge Racer games that low battery life makes the framerate really, really choppy, but it's fine if your battery is ok.

I've tried 3 person race with ad-hoc mode, and there were no framerate problems. Definitely nothing different compared to the regular single player game.

Question to anyone who played the game a bit more extensively. What track is this:

wipeout-pure-20050217085908368.jpg

wipeout-pure-20050217085908853.jpg

(I'm assuming all three pics are from the same track, but I could be wrong)

I played Zone mode like crazy hoping to unlock it, but now that I have all 4 tracks unlocked in zone mode, I see this one is none of them :(

There's 4 tracks that look exactly like those pics above. I can't put a name on each pic, but they're from the "Classic" league that you'll eventually unlock

I don't think Zone tracks unlock anything except the "Zone" vehicle. To get the Classic league, I think you just have to complete tournaments or earn medals.

I'm 1 step away from making a 100% save game. All I need is a gold medal in Phantom Class/Acension tournament and I'm completely finished with this game (until the downloadable content starts rolling). I'll probably send me save to Gamefaqs.com when I beat it

alright, phantom is fucking impossible. i'll unlock the zone ship and try that for a couple days, but if i don't make progress i quit.

Has anyone gotten the web browser to work in WO:Pure? How efficient and easy is it to navigate. What kinds of speeds are ya getting?

It was at 3/3 bars when I started and 2/3 when we finished (I'd played for ~1/2 hour earlier in the day since charging). I don't think that was the issue.

Unlocking Classic league tracks is done by number of medals, I believe. Get some golds on Single Race and Time Trials, that should help.

wipeout-pure-20050217085908853.jpg

Just a guess, but this looks like the classic version of Manortop.

Played a little over an hour today, finally (and barely) got phantom unlocked. The AI is ridiculously brutal in rapier and phantom classes. i barely got a gold on the last track, which is ironically the second easiest track in the game. i was in the lead for the latter half of the third lap when i got hit with a quake and then rockets, which brought me to a halt after my autopilot ran out. The rush of craft knocked me off the track, and when i respawned i was in sixth. The only way i finished in first was through luck (a quake, some boosts, and autopilot). i didn't play much of Fusion, which i hear is brutal as well, but i've been hit with more quakes in Pure than in WOXL and WO3 combined. i wouldn't consider the AI a problem, but in combination with the framerate, it makes the higher classes more about luck (or on-the-fly framerate compensation) than skill. i've gone so far as to wear a wrist strap when playing, so i can't toss the PSP across the room.

i've got something like a paltry 20 gold medals, though i really don't feel like going through each of the tracks and getting any more, especially on a class lower than flash. i'll definitely need to unlock the zone craft to get anywhere in phantom or the classic tracks.

OK, I suck at Wipeout Pure.

I've never been great-- I've never completed any of the higher classes in any Wipeout game-- but I'm just a doddering fool with Pure. I've gotten all Golds in vector races but can' get above Bronze in time trials. Venom kicks me around, I can eek out Silver in some races, but often I just blow up.

I'm sure I'l get better with practive (I haven't played that much so far) but this fact that there are *4* more leagues is discouraging.

Any tips? I'm using Piranha, the fastest ship I have available to me.

And and the game is a lot of fun anyway. I think it would be very cool if we got mroe classic tracks. Karbonis, the only classic track I've unlocked, is one of the most boring of the old series' tracks.

Time trial is all about speed, which means hitting the speed pads, not hitting walls, and taking turns well. Pirhana is a fast team but with poor handling. Try a team like Harimau that has better handling, which is especially true on some of the tracks with a lot of curves.

Honestly, i haven't bothered with time trial much. The lack of other craft is both a godsend and an annoyance. i can't bring myself to play time trial without others to race against, although on the higher speed classes the AI is annoyingly brutal and cheap at times.

I really, really hate how the CPU always has and magically uses a shield when you're near first place, even if you hit them from point blank range.

I'm playing time trial to learn the tracks better, and the get medals and unlock Classic mode.

I'll try a different craft. I asked because back in WOXL days, I sucked and sucked until I picked a faster ship, and suddenly I was beating tracks like crazy. Sounds like picking the fastest ship isn't necessarily the best idea in Pure, at least for now.

As other people have mentioned in this thread (Wario64?) I just decided to unlock the Zone team first, makes clearing the rest of the game much easier...

You unlock the Zone team by getting four golds on the four Zone tracks, of course :)

Yeah, it does.

On my vacation, where I could play more than a little at a time, I took a concentrated crack at getting all golds in Zone mode. I did, but it took quite a while. Zone mode seriously kicks my ass. I've been having fun playing with the Zone ship since, and it is easier.

I also opened Manor Top, which also kicks my ass.

Wipeout Pure is a great game, and the more time I put into it, the more I get out. Just like the first Wipeout was my favorite PSX game, this may end up being, years later, my favorite PSP game.
