the wire or game of thrones?

Game of Thrones is better. Watch that.

Season 5 of The Wire retroactively ruined the rest of the series. The McNulty bullshit with the fake
serial killer
ruined the entire damn series. I gave up on it after that. It was that bad.

This from a person that stuck with Weeds, Entourage, and House through the end, and is still watching Dexter.

Preach on brother, you have the right of it. Dat season 5 was jump the shark stuff.

Nonsense mang, I could find you fifty stories far crazier that happened in reality.

Haven't watched The Wire [yet] but I'm fairly confident it's probably way better than Game of Thrones is. Season 3 is pretty meh; I prefer the books to be honest.

Man, season 2 of the Wire is one of the most unfairly hated things in the history of humanity. It's the third (or maybe even on a good day the second) best season in the series.

It's one of the ballsiest seasons of television, ever. The first season wasn't a ratings hit so they followed it up by introducing an entirely different group of characters that overshadowed the first season's arcs for much of the first half of the season. It's an ambitious and amazing achievement.

Fuck BET for editing out most of the dock scenes in S2, that shit should be a criminal offense.

season 2 actually turned out to be the highest rated season

Although the series has been critically acclaimed, The Wire never managed to earn anything more than a small but devoted following while it was on the air. Part of the reason, says co-creator David Simon, is that it has a primarily black cast representing the racial makeup of the real-life Baltimore. Indeed, the show's best-rated season is its second, which was the only one to have an equal number of white faces, being set in Baltimore's docks. Over the years, however, word-of-mouth helped widen the show's audience beyond its initial broadcast viewers, elevating it from overlooked gem to widespread cult phenomenon to national phenomenon (quite famously, Barack Obama considers it his favorite TV series), and eventually became so influential that it's said to have inspired actual legal reforms in the city of Baltimore - perhaps the ultimate historic vindication.

I was definitely a little disappointed at the beginning of season 2 because I really liked all the Barksdale organization characters, but it really is probably the second or third best season when you go back and watch it again. All the pieces matter

The Wire is a strong contender for best TV show of all time. However, I don't think you're going to get very much out of just a couple episodes, let alone the first two. You gotta sit down and watch a season to really appreciate it, as it is a slow burn.

GoT is a good adaptation of a really entertaining book series. It's gritty/dark fantasy.

Watch both.

Not even a fair competition. I'm a huge GOT fan and read the first 3 books. Over 10 years ago. The. Show is awesome and well realized but as shows go, it can't hold a candle to The Wire.

3 > 4 > 2 > 1 > 5

i think season 5's cop plotline is shit and i didn't really like the newspaper one either. the only one that lived up to the previous 4 seasons was the criminal aspect.

Boardwalk is great but its certainly no Wire.

#realwiretalk

3 > 2 > 4 > 5 > 1

I'd probably go 4 (one of the best seasons of any show ever) > 1 > 2 > 3 > 5. Seasons 2 and 1 are easily interchanged for me though.

And Boardwalk Empire is HBOs current best (Luck was better while it was briefly running, and I haven't watched the Newsroom).

Watch the Wire.

Im the biggest fan of both, and the wire is even better. Just take some time with it, its more glorious when you dont rush through all 5 seasons at once

Game of Thrones vs. The Wire?

It's not even a contest. The Wire is quite possibly the best television show ever made while Game of Thrones is like the third or fourth best thing airing on Sundays when it is in season.

man, what happened to the dogs is total bullshit. I hated joffrey (geoffrey?) from the moment I set eyes on him in episode 1, and him being such a little bitch is only serving to prove me correct.

This thread is making me rage, because A Song of Ice and Fire is just as good, if not better, than The Wire as a work of fiction. But then I have to remember that he's talking about the tv series, along with all the stupid changes the showrunners made.

Like that comment about how The Wire has better characters by a mile... fuck that shit. Arya alone is better than anyone in The Wire's cast except maybe Stringer or Bubbles... but her story is pretty much ruined in the tv series.

So this thread makes me rage because it seems like you all are shitting on one of the best fictional series ever, and then it makes me rage again because I have to remember what those two hacks Weiss and Benioff did to it.

I haven't seen GoT, but I already know The Wire is not only better, but in a different league. GoT is probably fun TV, but The Wire is great TV.

The Wire is better, but I think you are really selling GoT short.

I don't know shit about the books, and it does have the occasional plot hole or whatever, but I would say it's character moments are Mead Men / Breaking Bad teir. Better in some regards. Worse in others.
Its also operating on a scale that boggles the fucking mind from a production angle, which maybe biases me.

But yeah, I'm sure people who love the books have legit reasons to be angry, but as a huge wire fan, I can pick that shit apart too.

For the record, my favorite seaosn of The Wire is Season 2. I started off a little trepidatious, but it ended in poetry IMO.

don't worry, I'll read the books this weekend. I hope my library has them (at least the first one).

and yes, I can finish a 1000 page book in 2 days lol.

A Storm of Swords > The Wire Season 4 > The Wire Season 3 > A Game of Thrones > The Wire Season 2 > A Clash of Kings > The Wire Season 1 > A Dance with Dragons > A Feast for Crows > The Wire Season 5.

I can't get my head around the fact that people think that GoT is the better show.
One is an intelligent crime drama and the other one is rather dumb fantasy entertainment.

Both are entertaining on their own merits, but the Wire as a show shits all over Game of Thrones.

Yeah, read the books if you can. They're infinitely better than the show. Then watch the Wire, and you'll have the best of all worlds (then watch Game of Thrones if you have the time).

2&1>3>4>>>>>>>5

1&2 back to back represent the best of Wire for me. Takes the setting & plot then pivots focus sharply.

Love it.

Season 2 is amazing for me largely because of what a great character Frank Sobotka is.

Definitely these 1000 page books. They aren't exactly The Brothers Karamazov in terms of density.

The only thing in S5 of the Wire I can find fault with is the newspaper characters aren't that great. But the main reason people hate on it, which is of course
the McNulty stuff?
Laughable that that's a reason, especially when its said to be unrealistic and jumping the shark.

Like I say, I could go onto a news site now and find you things just as absurd that actually happened.

Just didn't seem in character to me for them to do that. I was ok with the newspaper stuff. The other stuff made me raaaaaaage.

Frank is for sure one of the best characters in the entire series, which is full of great characters.

The newspaper stuff is what generally brought it down for me. The ending was perfect though.

Still, since every thread that involves the Shield brings up the Wire, I feel I must bring up the Shield. One of the best shows out there (get past the first season), and the entire series is on Amazon Prime. Watch it.

game of thrones is dumb and the threads are total nerdfests

lol.

it's an aiight show but it's not even the best show airing right now. let alone being compared to some of the GOATS of a few years back.

edit: lmao book arya can go to hell too. how in the hell is she better than the majority of wire characters?

There's no way that ASOIAF is a good as The Wire. There is nothing in The Wire that comes close to the being as bad as the fucking atrocity that is ADWD. As far as I'm concerned Martin has totally lost it and I have serious doubts about the rest of ASOIAF.

Wire is better, but GoT is about THE GAME for the THRONE. It's political intrigue and people manipulating each-other. Fantasy shit and action mostly happens off-screen and is honestly barely even present in the first season. The setting shouldn't damn the whole show to being "dumb"
For better or worse 99% of the show is people talking, scheming, lying and hiding.

The fantasy stuff is just unique window dressing for this type of story IMO.
