Damn, wish you could turn off the hud or make it fade. Got the adrenaline perk and it adds another big bar right under the health.

Thanks for the tips, I was actually dying a lot but that's not such a bad thing, I think I wasted some Talents points also.
I didn't even realize you could run away from battle.
NO Prob. I die a lot more than I should for someone giving advice! ;P I started over on Dark mode when I ralized this game wasn't as hard as I thought and like you didn't like my choices early on during easy mode.

In the original release I was able to use the pillars in the room to break agro with the guy and heal before finishing off the last wave.

Cheap, but effective.

You can still do that. I go behind there all the time to plan what I am working on....this next time it will be traps....I know I could eventually beat these guys face to face...my problem isn't so much requiring healing, its that I get OHK by gargoyles once they DO show up! I ;ve seen a lot of videos, going around the horn, pillar to pillar swinging only once or twice per pillar works....but to me this method is no less cheap...this boss fight is no holds barred as far as i'm concerned.....I'm bringing 13 snare traps, 5 crawlers, and 7 conflagrations in adddition to the red haze bombs which give a similar effect as axii. I will try to put them all down but hopefully the operatoir doesn't hit too many before the gargoyles get a chance...this could foil my master plan.....if not I'll tyr it a differnt way...My laptop is medium specs at best and I get a lot of lag and my controller method means it is really jerky...not complaining, but I can bet I would do better without these factors affecting it so I am not worried about looking like a cheese demon....the only time I felt bad using traps was when I fought Ves...she actually has some good skill...but she gave up after slowly but surely hitting 3 of the traps I had placed just for her...such a difficlut enemy otherwise as you have to get behind her to get a hit in.....but early on I needed the help.

I'm looking for the Superb Longsword in chapter 1. Does anyone know where to find it?

NOt sure if its the specific one you are looking for but there is a pretty good one (best unless you are Dark mode I think) in a bandit's cabin in the woods...I beleive you get there by doing the troll quest.
i.e. you open the area for the troll, but once he calms down you serach the pond he lives in and you can find a ramp out of there into a small swampy area...tonnes of loot in there but easy to miss.

edit wiat! I remember that thing now..it was awesome at the time (best reach of any in the game) and I used it all the way to blasphemer set...I belive you can buy it directly form the blacksmith...wiki says it costs 557:

So, after the bug with the tutorial, now I have a bug where when I go into any menu my screen just goes black.

I've never, ever had this many problems with a game. Not even TES.

Really impressed by how good they got the 360 version looking. The more people that play this game, the better.

Agreed.

Playing Chapter 1 now; however I really like the Arena mini-game. Does anybody here play Arena mode? I am addicted.

I so hope they come up with DLC for this gem. What a great game!

Damn you, CD Projekt, I was talking a couple of days ago with a friend about how this title essentially ruined fantasy games for me.
Since I played the Witcher a year ago I have a hard time now looking at armors and items in pretty much any other RPG or hack'n slash around.
Oversized swords floating on the back of the main character? Giant shoulder pads? Cheesy flaming effects on the blade? Horned helmets and unlikely spiked chestpieces?

Just picked up the Witcher 1 from Steam for $9.99. Never played it before, so I'll do a run through with that before picking up this game. I've heard good things about the Witcher, hope it lives up to what everyone says about it.

It's unbelievable. I'm playing it right now, GOG version from when it was on sale recently. I could probably come up with at least 10 things that annoy me very much about it (one of them being that the english dialogue is massively cut compared to the polish original, and that my native language dub - the czech one - is hilariously bad, especially the main character is just tragic - as a result, I need to use the original dubbing with czech subs). Camera is far from ideal, combat is sometimes a mess, I have some graphical issues in menus, etc. Still, I consider it one of the best games I've ever played.

Just finished two Enhanced Edition playthroughs for Roche and Iorevth respectively (on Normal difficulty). Took me about a week. Iorveth's path is definitely much more fun compared to Roche in my opinion.

CDPR has done an excellent job with refining the game, and Act III is much better compared to its original state. I'm hoping that the choices Geralt makes will play a significant factor in Witcher 3.

And now I'm off to play Arena :p

By the way, for those who are interested, I've decided to upload key cutscenes and the new quests playthrough for the Enhanced Edition. It should be excellent reference/viewing materials for those who are interested

So any good tips on getting better at combat? I'm barely at Flotsam and getting my ass kicked by nekkers. I didn't have any trouble with combat until now, its really frustrating.

Quen and roll like a mad man constantly until you are standing behind whatever it is your killing. Heavy strikes to the back do more and get them in a brief lock.

Keep them in front of you and toss bombs at them. Grapeshot is good but the Zakairrian Suns or Dancing Stars work just as well against them.

Really, Chapter 1 = make bombs, love bombs. Chapter 2 = spam fireballs. Chapter 3 = spam harder. Foolproof on every difficulty, no quen necessary.

I had been wanting this game since it came out on PC but I haven't had a gaming rig for years as I can't really justify the cash.

Anywho, picked it up on 360 and while I thought it started slow, I'm now up to Chapter 3 and I adore it. At times, the graphics are stunning, but what really blows me away is the mood and atmosphere. It actually feels like a cohesive game world, which is a rare thing.

Once you have updated your skill tree the combat is much better too.

Love it.

For CH 1 - traps, ch 2 traps, ch 3 - traps. All good stuff above..... But for nekkers....several things have not been mentioned yet.....first...they have a magic line they won't cross near the start of the caves in act 1. kill them one at time only comin accross the line yourself ienough to do a combo on the first or second nekker, thenn break back accross the line to recharge. You can place a trap just accross the line but this is unnessary....they will be easier for you one at a time regardless. once you thin out the bulk of them at the start of each cave they only come in samller waves after that and are more manageable...you can backtrack a bit laying traps behind you and if they follow you they will get trapped by your traps. Start experimetning with sings on nekkers...unfortunately they are the easiest animal you will face...so once you get the hang of tehm start using axii to get htem to figth each other (red haze bombs also do this (man I wish I knew that before act 3!!!)

for nekker contract, adn queen endrega....combine the quests...kill all the endrega eggs then run aroun attracting nekkers to come meet the queen....while they are killing each other you can use grapshot bombs on the nekker nests. The first time I did this a warrior nekker took the quuen endrega down to 1/3 health and I killed her....but then a regular endrega respawned while i was collecting the loot adn backstabbed me for huge damage...killing me as I was not fully healed yet...didn't save....took another 10 tries or so til I finally got the blasphemer set.

Well I FINALLY got the operator down to size.....I am such a poor player, and playing on a wonky system as the laptop barely runs it in 30 fps, with a gamepad means I gotta pull every tricck in the book for something like operator...here is a noob/poor player spoiler to take down the operator:

bring a tonne of traps and bombs..especially red haze as these will make the two gargoyles fight each other adn the operator. Staying behind the pillars lets you rest vs. the opertaor when he is by himself ...he will actually leave you alone. Use this area to rest, apply buffs, andd bombs and traps in and out of your hotkey, etc. THE one thing I didn't realize you could do here until tonight is save....I was going to give up and grind for more leveling and armour etc, but when I could save, fight the two gargoyles, tehn save and plan for the next wave...it became so much easier...still took me all night with a tionne of OHK on me by the gargoyles, but finally beat the operators ass and now I have his awesome staff!!!!!!
I realized after this fight that I had enough money for kingslayer armour etc. and unfortunately becuase I wimped out and turned the gargoyles off earlier for the gargoyle contract instead of killing them all, I don[t have enough dust for the boots....two sneaky arachas shitters suckered me into a gullly while I was trying to grind for the final shit...didn't save as I was only expeting harpies and BOOM 2 hours of kingslayer shit down the tubes. FFFFAAARG! this game can be annoying depsite that I like it lot.

You really can play it any way you want. I don't particularly care for alchemy, so I rarely use potions and the like. I beat what is widely considered the hardest fight in the game on Dark without. I know they are there, but I will try out a fight first to see if I can handle it without. My personal strategy is swordsmanship involving a lot of rolling and quick strikes, supplemented by intelligent use of signs. I rarely even block, and every few hours I suddenly remember: oh Shit, I have bombs. Somebody mentioned fireball, which is a sign I find to be almost useless, so it reflects that there are a lot of viable strategies. Improved Roll is essential to play this way though, although I've never gotten 200% roll. That seems excessive, and the level 1 improvement is perfect for me.

Nekkers for instance. In the early going, even on normal, a few strikes to the back and you go down quickly. So in the cave, for example, I would use quen, just as a backup, roll out, take out two or three, roll to an open area, reapply quen and repeat. I was able to kill what must have been a group of 20-30 nekkers this way (every one in the cave ran to meet me in that front area) on dark. In this situation, blocking is completely not-viable, but rolling works, and bombs would help.

I never use traps. I barely remember bombs, and you have to actually craft traps, so meh. But again, I love that other people not only use them, but find them to be essential.

My favorite sign is probably Aard leveled up with high critical effects % bonuses. Quen is great as well, I analogized it to the armor you wear in Super Ghouls and Ghosts type game. It allows you to make a dumb mistake, or be slightly reckless and still come out of it. You don't even need to level it up, as it will always take 1 hit.

Yrden is good in the early going, until you master swordplay. Also good for large monsters, but higher failure rate in those instances. Axii is good for difficult groups. Igni? Well, I don't care for it. Good against wraiths and golems, but not much better than Aard in even those instances. I've never leveled it up though, so it could possibly be god tier later on, who knows.

That is horrible. I regret that I clicked on the link. The gist- this game sucks because I suck at combat, the difficulty curve is bad, and I am too dumb to figure out the story. Using dialogue options to explain things= Fuck that noise, lulz. Cutscenes 4 Lyfe!

I use 200% roll just to travel faster lol

Too bad you can't roll with sheathed swords though. Those guards always bust my balls :(

I was hoping using a scoop or a shovel wouldn't piss off the guards, but they weren't too pleased with my experiments. Gotta watch out for them crazy broom-killers...

You come across him at the tail end of a story event. More specifically you (spoilers for the end of Roche's path ch2)
take care of the mist and escape the fort with Roche. You come across two trolls there one in conversation and one you need to save from soldiers.

Er, yeah, well its during/before you go to catch(major end chapter spoiler)
Sile' at Vergen
.

There's a ship you can't quite get to because of story reasons at the south end of the map. Well, you eventually get to go there at what I'm assuming is the near end of the chapter (haven't finished but things are happening at a mile a minute rate).

Just want to ask if Playing through Witcher 1 is worth it, It's a good price on steam and I'm interested on the witcher 2 through that prologue video they put up.

I usually play the games in order, is it worth it to play through Witcher 1?

It's a completely different kind of game, really. Plus, the story in the Witcher 2 is standalone.

Just know that the Witcher 1 uses the NeverWinter Nights 1 engine to make an an action battle system.

As far as story goes, it's absolutely worth playing.

CDProjekt's advantage in making various armors show up on the player character in this game is that they were working with ONE pre-written character, so they just had to make sure the equipment looked cool on that one character.

I've been Yrden exclusively - is it worth upgrading this path or does it become less viable as the game progresses? It has been super helpful so far at crowd control and stunning bigger enemies, I would like to keep playing this way if I can.

It seems to be a polarizing game nowadays. Some love it to death, some doesn't like the combat but thinks the story and choices makes the game well worth playing and some think the combat is so boring that they can't bear to finish it. I say it's worth trying it out if it's cheap because if you like it you will probably really like it.

Finished it again, now on Dark difficulty. Its unbelivable how much changes depending on your choices at the end, my ending now was completetly different from my first playthrough. It's still game of the forever.

How can I get the Queen Harpy Contract in Iorverth's path? There is nothing on the notice board, only the harpy contract itself.
Don't worry, you'll get it during one of the main quests.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
:Grumble:

Just blew all my cash in Chapter 1 crafting the two special swords as part of the exclusive Dark difficulty set(forget the names). Sadly I realized that when I equipped them they continuously drained my life due to being cursed equipment.

Gonna reload an old save and save my cash. :/

"I am on an achievement schedule and I don't appreciate the attention this game demands for casual players."

This embodies everything I loath about achievement/trophy hunter culture.

I would agree that the Hoborg dude from that thread embodies the negative side of achievement/trophy hunter culture. But there are plenty of people in that thread telling him to stop being a bitch. I'm an achievement whore and I'd also tell that guy to stuff it.

Either way... reading that OP was a good thing. Like joe just said that has sold me on the game, haha. Challenge accepted.

Ever since I finished Deus Ex HR and Mass Effect 3 one after the other, I've been craving another adventure RPG badly. I started up Vanquish and I just can't get into it. It's a game that is up my alley (I love Bayonetta and the Platinum Studio / Kamiya in general) but I think I need another Western RPG fix. Both New Vegas Ultimate and Witcher 2 have been on my radar for a long time.

I'm an achievement whore myself, but I laughed my ass off at this statement. I mean, it's like completely missing the point of achievements and it makes all of us that do care about achievements look that much worse.
