The Witcher 3 - Official Xbox One gameplay

has combat ever been a strong point of this series? i played w2 on 360. i remember it being ok. not anything that turned me off nor did it blow my mind. decidedly average and non-offensive. this kind of looks like more of the same.

then again i cant think of any open world game that doesn't have some sort of jank

is it really not in the PC version? That's good news.

Its been seen in PC footage, but I can only remember it in scenes where you're walking forward and trees fade out pretty quick. Whether its less severe on PC in combat I'm not sure.

I have the PC version on order so I hope we can adjust it.

Seems like you might also be able to tweak it. There's some pretty detailed tweakables in the settings files.

This question probably won't go over well here, but is there any way (other than importing a Saudi Arabian copy) to get a censored version of this game in the US? Is there an option to filter/toggle the profanity/nudity? I don't particularly care for virtual sex scenes in my living room and I really want to experience the rest of the game.

If it is like Witcher 2 you can avoid them without having them censored. None of the ones I encountered were ones that were forced on me (I had to pick the right options for them).

In regards to the trees removing themselves from your view, I think that's something that looks pretty bad while you're watching, but something I think I'll be thankful for while I'm in combat and trying to see shit. Those forests are dense.

I don't think it's a problem at all.

Yeah, I can see it being distracting for awhile but it'll end up being practical.

Still kinda wish there's an option to disable it.

Should had went with the Bayonetta solution and just make them a little trasnparent but not completly invisible, that way it mantains that the object is there but just a little transparent for gameplay purposes.

Either way I dont care as long as is not the complete opposite and a fucking tree is there obscuring everything.

I'm actually quite the fan of dynamic resolutions. I think they are great to prevent framedrops. Some games drop resolution dynamicly in order to prevent the framerate from dropping. Wipeout for example.
So the game stays at a certain resolution for most of the time and when there is an unusual amount of stuff happening it drop the resolution instead of frames.

I just think Witcher is doing it the other way round: Game will stay at lower resolution usually and is going up when there is unusually little stuff happening on screen. So not really about preventing the accasional framedrop.
Of course I don't know, but that would be my guess.

Oh that would be fine too. I just really don't care for it lol. If they are completely optional I'm fine with that. The game looks amazing but the last thing I want is Geralt's virtual junk dangling on the wall in my living room lol.

I agree. I'm all for more options. I can see it being a bit more difficult to toggle than a HUD option though.

I suppose they had a choice- they could leave it, and watch people get frustrated when they couldn't see their character, they could give Geralt a white outline or something so that you can see him behind shrubs/trees, or they could do what they've done.

None of that "pop up" has been seen out of combat. It appears when you get in combat, the stuff in the way of the camera fades out . I don't think its anything to worry about.

Watch the second GIF closely people. Whenever the small tree is directly in front of Geralt it fades out.

So you're saying it's to ensure the players view is never hindered in any way as can sometimes in games like this?

I mean, if that's the reason, I actually applaud it. I can't be the only one whose suffered at the hands of scenery getting in the way during a tense moment in combat.

I also like it. AC Unity and Bloodborne should have had that feature too.

Still looking good! But they really shouldn't call it "dynamic scaling" if what they really mean is "dynamic variable resolution". Because those are very different things. Scaling is... scaling. As in you scale the image up to a larger size than the native source image. Which is what all sub-1080p games do. Whatever, just bothers me a bit.

Oh my god, there should be an option to disable this "feature"

Yep, looks absolutely terrible. I would vastly prefer translucent trees to ones that just disappear and reappear, but perhaps that would take more juice. In which case I'd prefer them to just stay put.

Not sure tbh, given it does obstruct your movement they might as well render the tree.

It definitely has the same structure as TW2. What they have done here is address the major complains that people had. Its suppose to be faster and more responsive, hit boxes improved, targetting is better, qtes are gone, potions can be used in combat, and you have more defensive options than just quen/roll spam. They've also added a lot more depth to it with an active skill tree, armor classes, toxicity and adrenaline management, crossbow uses, environmental objects. On paper, its far from a copy+paste of TW2. Whether they execute on all of this or not is something we'll have to see in 7 days.

I really don't think the pop in is that bad. I've seen more offensive pop ins on Skyrim with a tweaked uGridsToLoad. While it's usually one of my biggest pet peeves in regards to graphics, I don't think it's the end of the world here. I'm probably going to wait and upgrade my PC rather than play this on console anyway though.

Would have been a more elegant solution to just make obscuring objects transparent rather than taking them out of view outright but that's just me.

so its like dead rising 3's scaling resolution depending on framerate.....that's pretty cool, was great tech to be honest and will probably be used in the future more often...giving calm scenarios that really clean look where when action gets heavy it downs it because half the time with that much shit going on, no one is really paying attention at that point.

Worked for DR3....which Ioved....so bring it on!

Just a shame about that games horrendous pop in and Jaggies (on Xbox one)

looks pretty unimpressive to me, especially when compared to Dragon Age.

and uhhh...why is almost every single attack a spin/twirl move? lol

People really signing up for the terrible pop in defense force? REALLY?

CDPR cementing their place as king of the jank.

I am pretty sure the trees just appear/disappear depending on the camera position. The trees appear when he dodges away because they are not in the way anymore. Not that he automatically jumps because a tree pops up.

Sure, it might look a little silly, but I'd rather take that than having trees in the way in combat.

Exactly. I hate having my character blocked by some object, especially during combat. I happen to think it's a nice touch. Also, another indication that it's designed this way is the fade in and fade out. It's not a "pop-in".

Wait, what promo is this? I don't see it offered anywhere... I have a pre order with Target but I'd be willing to ignore that one if I can get 20 bux off at Amazon (Target is only offering me 5 dollars credit rebate).

Edit: Looked it up. Apparently I am not eligible as it doesn't list it as one of their offers on my card. Ah well. I'll probably get it quicker by going to target in the morning than waiting for it to come by mail anyways.

I wasnt eligible either..but I just copied and pasted the promo, did an online chat, said I needed help placing an order, and she issued me the 20 dollar credit

I'm just not seeing anything fundamentally different (or even really that tweaked for that matter) with the combat over TW2. And the combat in that game wasn't anything to write home about. Even though it might "feel" more fluid, that's just because they upped the animations, but the MO seems identical; jump towards an enemy and mash a single button until it dies. You can toss in signs or whatever, but they seem like they were added in a kind of "hey, here's one more button for you to push, if you really want to, but you don't need to since mashing is superior anyway" kind of way.

Im hoping we got something from digital foundry soon, there seems to be some pretty bad framepacing issue going on, im not sure its the actual framerate but theres a lot of stuttering.

gotta hand it to gaf.. every new witcher 3 gameplay video comes with old criticisms.
This, game looks superb as expected on all platforms, this Xone footage looks great.

Now we will get PC or ps4 players trying to pull it apart, for #treepopingate even though it has been in all other videos!!!

I'm quite glad the trees/foliage/whatever else fades out at this rate for the sake of the camera, anyone who has played Bloodborne recently would appreciate it.

I must be on planet crazy town, i never had a problem with Witcher 2 combat. Obviously im in the minority.

It's basically Arkham Asylum lite, with even less consequences.

Maybe the boss fights with be an altogether different beast, but every gameplay video with regular enemies has shown the exact same thing. And 99% of the time when someone does the random hop backwards, it's not even needed. It's like they did it because they were afraid that the enemy was going to somehow recover from the infinite stunlock that they are currently in.
