The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt exceeds 1 MILLION pre-orders worldwide!

I'm one of those.

SUPER hyped about this, it's been forever since I've been this excited for a game.

Can we please stop with this shit?

It's all on a developer to developer basis. If it was a crappy dev, yeah, you would have a point.

CD Projekt is not on that level. The possibility of the game turning out shit is zero.
Bungie?? No developer is above reproach.

Because...? If you're paying upfront I agree, that's just giving the store a free loan for no reason. I'd never do that. The place I usually pre-order at (along with basically all other respectable retailers in Sweden) takes nothing for a pre-order until the second you get the game (or they ship it, if you've chosen home delivery), and I can cancel at any moment before that. So I'll just pre-order games I'm interested in, I have nothing to lose by doing so. Guarantees me a copy (or I can just not pick it up if I decide I don't want the game after all), along with any pre-order bonuses. Maybe those are what you dislike though?

If you choose to pre-order from retailers with shitty anti-consumer practices, sure.

How does it work on Steam/GOG/PSN/XBL? Can you cancel and get your money back? If not, I agree that sucks.

Let me explain.

First of all, the whole issue of shit games comes from the fact that the industy has risen up to a level where economy execs aren't familiar at all with the actual gaming coulture, but are just looking at profit margins, graphs and stock prices. These people have the power to decided what kind of games are produced and what kind of deadlines etc are given to the teams. Main concern for them is to earn trust of stockholders - another bunch of people who have no clue about the actual gaming coulture.

[Don't quote me, I'm making up numbers to explain the overall point]
So, publishers have data that around 99% of preorders are finalized, through stores and platforms where you pay upfront, and 90% of "reserving preorders" get picked up and paid. This means that it's a pretty safe assumption that ~90% of preordered games end up being a sale for the company. Hence, the CEO can provide stockholders an information that "AAA Casual Shooter: The Game 2015" has sold 10,000,000* copies, even if the actual number of fully paid copies may still be at only 10%. This makes all of the ingnorant economypeople happy, who I mentioned in the above section. The game launches completely broken, utterly unplayable on any platform even after months of updates (done by a team with minimum amount of resources because who cares?). The game will be seen as a financial success and the stockholders approve of this action as long as the backslash doesn't break the internet and actually start affecting stock prices.

Getting a bit of discount, a cool free dlc or some store credit sure as hell isn't worth being a part of such a phenomenom. That's why they bribe you. Because your preorder is worth the much more than what they're giving away as a "gift".

I built a new PC just for this game. Sooooo hyped!

Preorder-shaming is odd behaviour. I mean, yes, it's risky, but I've personally always found that there's a certain atmosphere to playing a game day one that makes it alluring, especially when there's stuff like GAF |OTs| to hop into and participate in. The risk of getting burned will be present whether or not the game is released, and the price is always fluctuating. Scorning & shaming others because of their excitement for a game strikes me as a foolish thing to do.

An aside, but now that I think of it since I've been on GAF I've preordered more games than ever, partly because the launch day hype is fun to participate in. GAF, what've you done to me, dammit.

I see that resistance was futile. What a monster...

While we talk about if to pre-order or not those with GOG pre-order can grab full OST from GOG.com. Then you can have this discussion with some great music at background ;)

Man, leading executives are the worst. If only they were familiar with the gaming culture.

Are you somehow retarded?

And a pleasant day to you as well.

People still pre-order games?

It seems that they never learn...

Learn what exactly? That I have the choice to go ahead and buy early if I find a game appealing enough? Yeah, I have learned that and like to take advantage of it from time to time.

On a serious note, there are also times that I have also waited for reviews and ended up hating a game all the same. Regardless, I just go with what I think I will enjoy. As I am sure the others who pre-order are also doing. Stop being so condescending.

I'm excited to play a game that I know will be great and pre-ordering lets me download it and have it ready before it's out. I'm not sure what the issue is. If it turns out to be a horrible game (it won't) then I guess that's my fault.

Guys,

I've looked and asked and have yet to find an answer...Does the digital xbone copy come with the soundtrack? I have had zero confirmation and I really do want this soundtrack

The thing is, this isn't some sort of enlightened viewpoint. These are grown ass people responsible enough to make money who are also fully aware of the risks and consequences involved with preordering. They know it and they do it anyway because they are willing to accept the risk. If CDPR delivers a broken and shitty game then I'm sure that will weigh on any future purchasing decisions those people make toward CDPR games.

The short time risk of the game being shit isn't the issue. (Almost) anyone can afford to lose a 50 at times for doing a bad purchase. The long time risk of the whole industry turning into moneygrabbing shit, like the movie and music industry did more or less, is the actual problem. Preordering coulture feeds those toxic business practices because on paper it looks fine at worst and excellent and profitable at best, no matter the actual quality of the product sold.

If every person stopped preordering tomorrow what do you think would happen? Things aren't going to get better. They will continue to degrade and "money grabbing shit" is never going away because these are businesses and the only thing they want from us is money -- the business/consumer relationship itself encourages toxic practices.

The same people that made Deus Ex made Invisible War, no one is above making a shitty game.

I hope this leads to more 10% off digital pre orders. It's a good way to subvert the Gamespot pricing that digital prices have to follow.

I haven't jumped yet. But that is only because I have Finals this week. So since I wouldn't be able to play it right away anyways, I decided to wait, and read some reviews.

Really stoked for release though. I hope it turns out as good as it looks!

Pre-ordered the PC disc version

I love the series, the atmosphere, music and just being in the game and own Witcher 1/2. It's a special occasion to me

Now just let me pre-order Cyberpunk 2077 CDPR and I'll be set!! I already know Witcher 3 is going to be amazing.
