Beat the first boss on Death March, and I loved it (for reference, I'm level 36 with mastercrafted Wolven gear and a fast attack build with some sign upgrades thrown in). It forced me to use tactics I had never used before, namely not using my sword at all. I was actually going to save it with the Share button but then the bloody trophy popped and reset the timer. Here's what I did:
Once you get the rhythm down, it's actually quite easy. The main thing to remember is to take your time and don't be greedy. Even when you're in beside him, you don't have to attack unless the moment feels right. Always use a single Igni, and get out of there. Of course, this is only one strategy and there are undoubtedly more!
For the
directly after the boss, just
- As soon as the fight starts, use Quen, roll, and mid-roll pop a Tawny Owl.
- Be patient for the entirety of the fight.
- Don't dodge, just use roll. It may have a stamina penalty, but it's a lot safer.
- Always have Quen active. If it has been a while and you haven't been hit, re-use Quen anyway just to reset the timer.
- Whenever you have an opportunity (usually after a tongue attack), hit the boss with a single Igni burst. Then roll away. Don't be greedy and try to hit him with your sword or you'll be fucked.
- If there's a bit of distance between you and the boss (and providing he's not winding up for an attack), toss a Dragon's Dream bomb at him.
- Rinse and repeat, popping Tawny Owl and Swallow/White Rafford's as necessary.
- If you have Pop's Mold Antidote, it might be useful to pop it. I didn't, but I can see how it could be handy.
- Remember, the gas the boss spews is flammable. This is another advantage of using Igni.
- The boss will often jump just as you use Igni, causing it to miss. Sometimes it won't even affect him (his face seems to be his weak spot). This is fine. Don't get frustrated, just back off and wait for the next opportunity.

For the
mage
rush that fucker. After the others are dead, spam roll towards him, attack two or three times, and dodge away from his counter swing. Then rush him again when he teleports.
