The Wonderful 101 |OT| Diplomacy has failed

I don't understand the Vorkken fights?

Like, can you even counter his whip?

Do you have to wait until he hits you with a fist or hammer then stun him with the jelly?

I reflect and then immediately get a giant sword and go nuts, but it feels cheap,

can't jelly spikes which is what the whip is covered in

go nuts with unite morphs for maximum damage

UNITE BIG CHEWGI

You PP'd everything right?

I am trying to the
Kahkooh-Regah from the epilogue
in hard. Help me ;-;

His normal punches all have tells. So with enough practice I can dodge them all. His non-conventional attacks are all easy to dodge The one that I have the most trouble with is when he send that eel-thing from the 003C fight. I can only dodge it the first time cause his hand movement tells which way (up or side) he will be coming from. But after that I can't tell if his hand movement is supposed to be telegraphing all attacks beforehand (like when he is about to do his 4-8 combo move) or if only the last hand movement before the eel comes reveals the attack position.

I don't understand how to fight the turtle enemies. I'm just spamming the hammer and it takes forever. I'm cleaely missing something here. Tried guts to counter their attacks but nothing works. Can someone help me here?

make your hammer bigger (bigger = more damage)

dodge head and fire attacks if you cant run away

use guts/jelly when they try to land/stomp on you with their feet counter with unite combos

if red weak spot is visible, use team attack to stun inbetween the turtle's attacks

I tried this with guts. The stomps don't harm me but it doesn't stun them or anything either. The problem is that I always struggle with my energy meter. Always empty because of dodging and using guts. I'm struggeling to form a hammer at all because of this.

Turtles are annoying. But if you manage to block their stomp move and attack like crazy afterwards, they will flip over and you can destroy them in seconds.

Yeah I my little brother is having this problem to. I think it's a byproduct of getting to comfortable with bayonetta's free dodge. In 101 you have to be much more deliberate with your dodges.

Basically you just gotta get by. The hammer can also block stomps like missiles if you stand in the right spot with it formed.

Turtles were my least favorite encounters initially, but once I got more skills and custom blocks(unite charge as a beginner answer, Hero Counter as a more advanced one.) they quickly became one of my favorites.

Yeah you can't damage him while he has a unite morph out so you have to find openings. You can only use Unite Guts on the fist or hammer, you have to dodge his other morphs.

If you don't have them already, try getting Hero Time and Hero Counter. Hero Time essentially gives you witch time from Bayonetta, so you can dodge something like his boomerang for example and get a lot of time to punish him for it. Hero Counter is the same as the item that lets you parry in Bayonetta, so you can punish his moves that you can't block (like the sword, whip, or claws).

If you don't have enough money for them, mix some credit cards. They make the fights against him a lot of fun.

You're using guts on the stomps right? Because that should cause them to balance on two legs allowing you to knock them over.

The easiest thing is to just draw a big hammer and attack but if you're low on meter just do Wonder-Cyclone or just loop Wonder Rising followed by the hammer attack in the air. Once their shell cracks you can use whatever against them.

If you have Hero Counter you can parry the flame pillars, so that makes fighting two at once a lot more manageable.

Started it yesterday and the intro cutscenes made laugh.

Question!!

The tanks that appear in the 001 mission are killing me so easily! When I hit it with unite hand o sword, the shield broke them! What do?

If you don't have it already, buy Unite Guts. You can reflect their cannon balls back at them to break their shield.

Thanks. Though that is exacly what I'm trying and it doesn't work :(

I would look for someone showing it on yt but my router died last night and today is a holiday over here and no way to fix it. Truely feels like gmaing in the 90s where you had to figure out stuff on your own right now...

Also it seems dodging right out of Unite bomb (when it explodes) gives you Hero time.

Haven't tried it enough to confirm, will try it later at night when I get home.

It's the side stomp or the back one you can block, not the one from the front legs. Basically you need to position yourself slightly on the sides or on the back to lure him into doing those attacks. We need a guide for every enemy.

Today I re-visited the 001 missions and something happened and I don't really know what it is.

On mission 001-B on the part where the spike balls fall from the sky and you have to use Unite Gun to shot them back at the thing shooting them at you, the Unite Gun (or Whip, as I tried with it too) would activate automatically on the super scope form and shot at the spiky ball making it explode without me doing anything.

Happened with the whip as well. Before I touched the spike ball, it activated by itself and attacked the ball making it explode.

First time I've seen this happen. Does anyone knows what is going on?

You have hero counter equipped and pressing towards the ball while carrying it is parrying it.

Hero counter overrides a lot of actions. Like what you're doing here with carrying the balls or even through a unite guts block during that period where the move sort of sits on it.

Just checked and, yes! Completely forgot I had equipped it. lol

Should start using it in battles now. :p

Not yet, I have all of Normal PP'd except 9-C and I'm currently working my way through Hard while collecting everything. I haven't even unlocked 101% Hard yet, but I have 90 bottle caps so I'm close to unlocking everything.

For the eel attack, none of his hand movements count until you see the symbols (kanji or whatever) show up. After that he will do 4 hand motions which will telegraph the 4 eel attacks. Watch for the screen shake for your cue to jump if he swipes his hands horizontally and just keep dashing either left or right if he does a vertical motion. It's fairly easy once you get used to it!

You can avoid those situations by making sure that you HOLD the stick in the direction of the spiked ball while your gun is equipped. If don't keep your momentum the game will just activate a Hero Counter and you'll destroy the ball.

In my opinion, one of the signs of a good game is when it makes that inner child that is locked inside of you come out. What I mean by this is that you have that childlike wonder and excitement when playing a game, while maintaining the critical thinking of an adult. Not a whole lot of games do that for me. Sure, I might have fun, and really enjoy a game I am playing, but when a game brings out that inner childlike excitement, it is a feeling like no other. One of the developers that brings out that youthful excitement and wonderment is Platinum Games, makers of some of the best action games ever [...] When they put their best creative efforts into a game, it shows, and nowhere is that more apparent than with the recent Wii U exclusive, The Wonderful 101!
What else can I say about this game? It’s fun, creative, hilarious, silly, crazy, dramatic, campy, and everything good about a video game from Platinum Games. It is really a terrible shame that this game isn’t selling well due to the fact that Nintendo, even though they had an entire Nintendo Direct about it, didn’t have that many commercials or ads for it, which is just a crime. We need to strengthen the sales of this game and show that there is interest for games like this. It is easily one of the most unique and memorable games of this year. It is one of my top 10 games of 2013. Even if you don’t own a Wii U, you need to buy this game

So I think my save file is glitched. Tried out very easy mode just to have some fun, found out it's easy-auto so forget that, tried switching to Hard. Kept resetting to very easy, but I did finally play through the prologue on Hard. Problem is, it's still easy-auto combos.

I really don't want to drop this save, but I think my only hope is that patch that is still on a bubble. Unless I'm missing some option in the menus to turn easy-auto off.

I'm not sure if I like this game or not. I tried the demo last night, and it was interesting...but I can't say I was hooked. I can't even tell if I enjoyed it.

I was basically running around, button mashing. I didn't know if the little dots on the screen were me, or the enemy. I did, however, start enjoying it more once I figured out I could do the different formations with the right stick and not drawing on the gamepad.

So...was I missing something? I'll probably play through the demo again just to be sure, but I don't understand the hype.

Well, that's frustrating on my end then.

You can remove it, just go in the Custom Block menu and scroll to the bottom of the list. It's equipped by default if you play a chapter on Very Easy and it doesn't take up any of your slots.

Just remove it and you're good to go, no problem!

It's not the hype you don't understand, its the game. There is a LOT to wrap your head around in this game and at first it really is just a confusing mess. This game asks a lot more of its players than most do, especially right from the start and with no serviceable tutorials. But once you actually understand what's going on, it really becomes an awesome action game in the vein of Bayonetta.

If you are not willing to jump that initial hurdle and make an active effort to learn the game, then it will obviously seem like people are hyped over nothing, which is why a demo probably isn't a huge benefit to just run through once and see if you like the game

I agree with this completely, i was initially very hyped for the game, then tried the demo and almost completely lost all interest, but after reading impressions i decide to risk it and downloaded the game. After the completing 001 i liked it but was still confused by a lot of the mechanics. I have now just finished 005 and while a lot of the mechanics i am still learning (just got used to hitting enemies in the air) I can now confidently say this is one of the most wacky, outlandish, and fun games ive played in ages.

It's a game with ALOT of depth, you haven't even scratched the surface yet. That bolded quote sums up the W101 really well, "I did, however, start enjoying it more once I figured out I could......" that's pretty much what this game is all about. You have SOOOOO much to figure out still!

Running around and mashing buttons is not what this game is about, try playing through the demo again and experiment a little bit. The little dots on your gamepad screen represent your characters but they don't really matter, just focus on what's happening on your main screen unless the game tells you otherwise. Use ZL to turn your group into the pudding form, that allows you to deflect most of the enemy attacks in the demo if you time it right. ZR is your dodge move, crucial to avoid taking damage, only your leader character can take damage but your other dudes can get temporarily knocked out. You won't lose health if they get hit but since they're essentially the building blocks used to create your Unite Morph weapons it's in your best interest to keep your group together. You can Dash by just tapping the Y button but if you hold it down your formation will tighten allowing your group to avoid enemy hits. The X button is your team attack and it's incredibly useful, I'm sure you noticed that enemies tend to dodge your attacks and backflip away. You can slow them down and keep them busy by sending some of your dudes at them. If you send enough guys out on a specific enemy you'll hear a sound and see the enemy glow which means he's staggered. When in that state, enemies can be juggled with a launcher. It's easier with the sword so just switch to that and do B,A to send the enemy flying. From there you can just keep the combo going by juggling them. If you experiment with the pudding morph you might notice that enemies have stars above their heads after being countered correctly, you can also use the launcher on them at that point. Basically you want to put the enemies in a vulnerable state and then just annihilate them, that should be your main objective during combat encounters.

Certain enemies like that car thing with the cannon have armor, you can reflect projectiles back at it with the pudding to destroy its shield. You could also use the hammer morph and destroy the armor that way. The enemies have tells before they attack, usually a glowing flash and a sound effect, try to look for those and counter with the pudding or dodge away. Keep in mind that trying to hit an armored enemy with regular weapons like the sword or fist will cause your weapon to break and some of your guys to be stunned for a couple seconds. You want to try to avoid doing that and focus on breaking that armor down before attacking.

There's alot more to the game but try to give the demo another chance while keeping in my mind some of the things I explained here. It will start to make more and more sense once you get used to it.

Hmm, probably the Fist. It has so much power as well as being quick to draw. Making a 100-man fist with all the time it takes, then having the huge fist pop up doing damage if you're already point blank, and then actually blasting an enemy or boss with it... the feeling is always great.

If I need to hit something mid-range, then I'll usually go for Whip over Sword for similar reasons.

My least favorite is Claw. It just feels like I'm hitting a few buttons and watching a long animation play out. And it does such a small amount of damage compared to the other melees that I mostly use it for point whoring. Instead of having the ability to flinch an enemy it can freeze them, but you can't do anything after the freeze either beyond switch morphs or do more damage. And half the times when you freeze an enemy they bust out with an attack so it becomes dangerous to go near them at that point. Plus, all the ice effects going around make it the hardest morph for me to see my character clearly while using it, so if I'm trying to move around an enemy and attack with it I'm instantly in danger of not seeing how close an attack actually is to me or I misjudge the probabilities of what attack will come next.

Also, for whatever reason, I tend to miss while using Claw Stinger.

Stop button mashing and learn the controls (primarily ZL to Parry/Unite Guts and ZR to Dodge/Unite Spring). When, for instance, an enemy is signalling an attack, it would be the perfect opportunity to execute a Unite Guts manuver. The game get's really crafty from there.

Also Unite Sword Deflects lasers.

Just remove it and you're good to go, no problem!

Just try to unequip the Auto Block. If it still doesn't work, how much have you really lost?

Yeah thanks, I'm frustrated at myself because I spent a good twenty minutes doing everything I could think of to remove it...but look at the custom block screen. I'll just blame it on being 4am in the morning so I won't feel quite as bad.

Also, for whatever reason, I tend to miss while using Claw Stinger.

I have this issue too, it's really odd. Wonder Rising with it is really fun to use when you combine it with multi unite morphs

My weapon ranking from favorite to least favorite is probably:
-Sword/Fist - Both pretty much fill the same role for me as a good combo tool and general weapon to use. Sword has more range, Fist has more power so I usually go back and forth. I find myself going to Sword more often because it's easier to draw quickly.
-Gun - The fact that its bullets stun enemies make this godlike. Wonder Stinger is amazing for building up the combo meter and Wonderful Cyclone does really good damage.
-Bomb - By itself it's not that great, but it gets a lot of use due to its slow ability and the weird exploit with the attack liner.
-Claws - Low damage but it's pretty fun to combo with.
-Hammer - Really good damage and has a lot of uses (breaks armor and protects you from above), but it's too slow for me to use a lot.
-Whip - I don't like the moveset on it. I really only use it when I have to.

I'd say Sword is most-used, followed by First, then Hammer or Whip. My least used is definitely Claws. I tend to use Whip and Sword the most for "support" morphs while I wail on things.

But my favorite would have to be the Hammer. I love air-comboing + cyclone and then finishing with a nice hammer pound to the ground. Always feels good. Oh, and of course Hammer has the coolest stinger. I don't use it a hell of a lot but it's a good finisher.

Gun is pretty so-so used. I'm beginning to use it more because I realize that you can continue combos with it while auto-morphing the sword. And, on top of that, it fires Wonderful ones who will (usually) start a climb attack, which is a nice bonus for starting into stun.

W101 is a game that offers nearly limitless potential if you’re the obsessive type who craves 100% completion, a perfectionist who likes to dig into a deep combo system, the hardest of hardcore players seeking insane difficulty or really any combination of the above. Even if you’re only interested in making one playthrough on Very Easy, W101 will provide more than enough enjoyment if you’re willing to give it the time and, yes, a little more effort than you might be used to. There’s also a multiplayer mode for up to five players that I didn’t have the chance to delve into! As a Wii U exclusive, Wonderful 101 is one of the strongest arguments for owning the console yet, and I hope this is a sign of things to come for the still-slumbering system.

Instant Cult Classic. The Wonderful 101 is the Viewtiful Joe of this generation and I mean that in the most positive and negative ways. This is a game that action fans will fall in love with, as long as they can appreciate its uniqueness. However, it’s a full-priced, Teen rated, cartoonish looking hardcore game that usually goes nowhere because anyone who looks at the package (that hasn't followed it since before its release) will have something to disapprove of. And for those few who can muster and master its gameplay will be rewarded with an unparalleled flow of amazement when you and the game are synced. Then and only then will The Wonderful 101 become exactly that: wonderful.

The minute the credits rolled, I wanted to immediately start New Game + and experiment with more Unite Powers and unlock new upgrades and simply wanted more of the game. That is a winner in my book. The Wonderful 101 is a grand slam for Platinum Games. Fun, funny, imaginative, and confident in its wackiness, it is an absolute blast to play.

Fist-> Sword-> Hammer-> Gun-> Claws-> Bomb-> Whip

not spoiling anything

So out of curiosity, what are people's favorite morphs?

Like how would you rank them all from most used to least used? Or favorite to least favorite if that's different.

Fist is a pretty safe choice for the favourite, it's versatile in battles and i'm always one for bludgeoning enemies with a giant fist. It's an all rounder weapon, usually my favourite weapon wouldn't be the one that's the main attraction but in this case I find myself standing by it a lot.

Sword is the other safe choice, when the fists pummelling doesn't quite have that extra reach needed then the sword comes into play, the reach of the giant sword can be a real difference maker at times.

Hammer is so damn slow that it can be hard for me to get effective use out of it but when it hits, it hits hard. Love how its stinger attack looks and a large hammer cyclone can be pretty brutal. Also fond of how the rising attack and aerial attack can work in tandem even if it's not much good for combos. Last point, it's a jet hammer which makes everything better, now if only I could get better usage out of it.

Claws are next simply because I always like claws but in all honesty I just can't get much good use out of them in this game so they're pretty disappointing for me. I find the damage output is a bit too low and that freezing enemies isn't as useful as it might sound. Basically the Claws are only this high just because of my preference to the weapon type. Gains extra points for the odd wall climbing section.
And I also can't aim its stinger for toffee but it's something different I guess.

Whip can be hit or miss, sometimes I end up wildly inaccurate with it but other times it works out quite well. What I like most about the whip is its more gimmick focused usage like swinging across gaps and throwing/flipping over enemies.

There's not much to say about Bomb, there's not a lot to it on its own but used in conjunction with other morphs it can become a really useful tool (or entirely too useful judging by the attack liner thing). It's visual effect is pretty nifty as well.

Gun at the end, it has its uses, in fact it's very useful at points whether the enemies are out of reach, stunning them or for racking up the combo multiplier but I don't get much enjoyment out of actually using it, aiming is occasionally a bit unwieldy and i've ended up making the bazooka by accident too many times for my liking when it wont really help me. It's good but it's not for me.

Just beat it. Really fun and exciting game. Maybe a too few many genre switching sections, but otherwise awesome (though I really liked the
two Punch-Out sections
).

Was kind of disappointed to see
you don't get to keep Immorta, Chewgi, and Vorkken's powers permanently after beating it. I don't suppose there's any way to use them without having to play the levels where you have them in the story, is there? Vorkken's power is really good, but there's hardly anything worthwhile to use it on.

There never should have been a demo imo.

The full game's opening prologue is pure joy, and introduces you to the core elements gently, succinctly, while working them smartly and seamlessly into a fantastic introductory level. The demo just kind of throws a bunch of bewildering toys at your feet and says "Here you fucking go then." I think it did more bad than good in attempting to entice fence-sitters.

I was lucky enough to play the full game in its entirety before ever trying the demo, and I'm glad I did.

Check the secrets tab that's on the achievement screen, you can unlock those three along with a bunch of other characters once you meet their requirements!
