The Wrap - ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Trailer Is HBO’s Most-Watched Trailer Ever After Just 3 Days

The teaser for the video game adaptation has racked up 158 million views
The clip’s performance is also a milestone for the show itself, marking a 160% improvement from previous “Last of Us”-related trailers and teasers — a clear sign that audience interest is high for Season 2. Season 1 episodes previously averaged nearly 32 million U.S. cross platform viewers.

The way this TV show keeps breaking records not only for tv shows based on videogames...but tv shows in general.
Hype seems to be increasing a lot lately.

Biggest trailere ever for any HBO show sounds insane.

Considering the remaster for the game keeps showing up on the charts without the tv show, i can only imagine what will happen in April.

Big test of Sony's transmedia strategy coming down the pipe here.

If Season 2 propels TLOUP1 and TLOUP2 back into the charts, I think you can expect a lot more investment from Sony into their own IP and game development as well as more resources towards transmedia.

After this will be low risk/high reward Until Dawn in April.

To maximize transmedia though, Sony probably will want at least 3-4 transmedia projects a year if not more. They're just not there yet.

As a publisher, I thought them discounting Ghost of Tsushima right as Rise of the Ronin was coming out and right before Assassin's Creed Shadows was pretty smart from what is generally a pretty brain dead publishing strategy, i.e. Horizon/Zelda/Elden Ring.

Biggest trailere ver for any HBO show sounds insane.

Imagine how big this show would have been on Netflix or Amazon. Sony is probably kicking themselves, but they're taking things serious with God of War getting Ronald D. Moore. Though again, he wasn't my first choice for this specific property. He probably would have been great for Intergalactic.

First season was good but basically a rehash of the game. Since I never played the second game, I’m definitely looking forward to this. Pretty nice now that I don’t have to slog through a bunch of boring walking sequences and can just get the story with real actors.

This is...certainly a take. HBO shows are known for being premium af. Netflix is like throwing shit at the wall and see what sticks...usually over 90% of their content isn't that big of a deal or even nominated for anything. HBO shows are not just about streaming as well.

There's also the fact most Netflix shows are uploaded all in the same day. One of the reasons why the first season worked so well was the discourse every week on social media, etc...

Yeah, the show succeeding on HBO, with their pedigree, is a much bigger deal than the usual Netflix slop.

Netflix gives access to way more viewers than HBO. It's not even close. Netflix has also proven that they can generate just as much buzz and hype releasing at once than a weekly release schedule.

TV shows like Wednesday and Squid Game have had far more success than The Last of Us. I'd hazard to say that all things being equal had TLOU been on Amazon or Netflix it would have won more awards (and more of the key awards) simply due to the increased buzz. By award season barely anyone was talking about TLOU.

158 million views in 3 days is huge.

This will win a couple Emmys, be nominated for more, and break records for HBO
Shit I wouldn't be surprised if HBO helped fund a TLOU 3 budget wise
yeah you're crazy to believe Neil and think there won't be a TLOU 3 lol

As a massive TLOU 2 (its the GOAT) fan.. Can't wait, best TV trailer I've seen all year, you can tell they upped the cinematography and budget big time. It looks good. The original seasons first trailer looked amateurish next to this

But more importantly, people can get used to Integalactic's Jordan through Nora. May be they won't hate my waifu so much anymore.

Can't wait to see audience reactions. I bet they soften the blow. Also they picked a non-masculine female to play Abby. Not a surprise. Both things they refused to do with us. Show will end up being far better than the game itself because they can't afford to let it shit the bed, joel will
probably live until the end of season fucking 2.

I am trying to go optimistic in the season and hope to be positively surprised as by season 1.
However I still can’t possibly see how Bella Ramsay will be convincing this season.
I mean she did a good job in season 1, but I still can’t see her playing a strong nearly evil badass.
It’s not her fault looking the way she does, but she still looks childlike and I cannot see that a little bit of make up fixed that.

I mean I wouldn't believe Neil regardless, but it could definitely be a ploy to get HBO to cover some of the expense. I don't think Sony actually makes that much money directly off the show, so if HBO wants more than 3 seasons, they might have to pony (no pun intended) up for more.

Season 1 cost about 100 million dollars. They could probably afford to throw 50 million into a 3rd game for another season or 2 and that would give Naughty Dog the security on top of a PC port to throw 300-350 million towards TLOUP3.

TV audiences aren't as easily butt-hurt as gamers. Game of Thrones killed multiple main characters and people rolled with it. It was refreshing to not have everyone have plot armor

You are out of your mind if you think broke ass HBO is going to fund someone else to make a video game just so their show gets better ratings. They have mountains of debt.

I doubt it.

Ellie is in Seattle in most of the clips.

First season was phenomenal. Still, Ellie casting was the worst of all characters in the show. Looking forward to season 2.

The story, characters and theme just resonates with consumers. There's no way Sony don't capitalise with a 3rd game and show extension

Squid Games took 4 years for a second season.
Wednesday was released in 2022 with only a 2025 release year.

Those are piss poor examples. And it's funny to say by award season barely anyone was talking about TLOU, but it won a shit-ton of awards during that time. What the fuck are you talking about? TLOU's success is one of the reasons why Fallout worked so well for Amazon, not the other way around.

Please tell me what this has to do with the platform they're on...

Try reading what people say... you seem lost.

TLOU didn't take major awards, it might have if there was more buzz. Amazon and Netflix have more than double the viewers as HBO, that's just a fact.
