I love how the Canadian Woman hockey team is so dominating that when they win they still give the first star to the loosing team goaler haha.

Canada and USA better watch it because the IOC has commented that they may remove Women's Hockey from the Olympics if both countries dominate too much while the rest falter

Medal Count...

Why does the US rank the countries by total medals and the rest of the World rank them by Gold first, then use Silver and Bronze as tiebreakers?

I'm not sure what way is better... maybe there should be some happy points based middle ground... 10 points for Gold, 3 for Silver, and 1 for Bronze seems okay.

I don't know, but I would guess it's because U.S. probably places higher on total medals than gold medals.

Wins matter most in my eyes. The USA counts medal total because it benefits them most, but it doesn't make much sense.

Good thing this is just the round-robin. Canada's men's curling team need to get their shit together.
Nerves? They made some bad shots that they just normally never do. Plenty of time to get their heads on straight.

The world level of curling has improved immensely. Most of these teams are very good. As soon as they made curling an official olympic event, countries started taking their curling programs a lot more seriously.

I think you are right.

I looked at the NBC page for 2010 and they had USA as #1, but I found this Wiki page and USA is #3: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Winter_Olympics_medal_table

According to the Wiki page, sorting by Gold medals first is the official IOC ranking method so it looks like Canada won the 2010 Olympics.

USA usually dominates both counts in the Summer games so your assessment is not exactly right.
China won in 2008, Canada in 2010, and Great Britain won in 2012, so my assessment seems fairly accurate.

The US has a large pool of athletes and a lot of money to spend so they can be close to the top in almost everything, but you can't guarantee gold. Trying to justify your spending makes sense, and - in this case - going by total medal count is the best way to do so.

The rest of the world does that that to take away from the fact how few medals some of them get. Total medal count is the right way to go about it as even a bronze medal is more than not getting a medal at all.

Exactly. It's all about volume with the US. Get as many athletes in every event, while other countries prefer only some sports.

Who cares about total medal count really?

I mean, I want Canada to win as much as possible, but I just cheer the individuals/team during their competition.

You guys should really watch the men's tourny if you can. It's pretty much like the world cup except for ice hockey. You will see some really exciting matches there.

Eurosport used to broadcast a lot of hockey, looks like they stopped. But I'll try to find a stream. Hockey is my favorite part of the Olympics.

because the olympics are a big national dick measuring contest, just like any other international sporting event.

I feel I should point out that I don't really care about medal count either. All things being equal I will cheer for Canadian athletes simply because I'm Canadian, but I usually cheer for the coolest or most deserving athletes, regardless of nation. Canadian or not, some people are assholes and I don't want to cheer for an asshole.

I'm just weighing in on the fact that gold medals should be the determining factor as winning is what matters.

I actually posted earlier that the way the US ranks the countries goes against the official IOC method. The rest of the world just follows the official way so it has nothing to do with how few medals they get.

If the US wants to insist on the volume win, then it should factor in medals per capita. Since the US has 9X the population of Canada, when they win 9 times the medals as Canada, I'll consider them better.

99% of the time it's not about preference but about ability, there's barely any countries out there that have both the finances and the population of the US, but mostly it's the population.

The Netherlands do really well but we'll always be limited by our low population.

Yeah I get that and it's fine. We all want our countries to do well.

But arguing about how OTHER countries rank their medal count is stupid as hell.

Such a difference watching men's moguls over women's. Pretty amazing how fast some of them go.
They also wipe out a lot more, it seems. I think they're well aware the level of competition is incredibly high so if they don't go for it they're not gonna have a chance. The ladies have the luxury of being a bit more conservative, I think.

Wut? London 2012....
USA 46 golds, 104 medals. 1st in both counts.

Beijing, USA 1st in total medals, 2nd in golds.
Athens, USA 1st in both counts.
