There it is again... Xbox 1.5! (Washington Post)

Here's the juicy quote

Instead of radically expanded graphics, expect the next Xbox to let players buy more downloadable content, said P.J. McNealy, an analyst at American Technology Research.

"This is more an Xbox 1.5 than an Xbox 2," he said. "It's like an Xbox with a broadband cash register built in."

As a result of such sentiment, some analysts voiced skepticism this week about whether the video-game market is ready for a new game console this holiday season.

+1 Sony PR - hate em for it, but they are damn good at it. Did they put that phrase in PJ's head?

Blackley's in on it too.

Seamus Blackley said:
No 'giant technological advance'
Though the MTV-watching world will soon find out what Microsoft has in store for its next generation, even Xbox's founder Blackley said that the next generation of video games "will see a more incremental increase in technological wizardry compared to previous turning points in the video-game industry. . . . You're not going to see any giant technological advance in this generation."

And Pachter

Michael Pachter said:
"I wonder if there's going to be enough time to get consumers really excited," said Michael Pachter, analyst at Wedbush Morgan.

And someone I haven't heard of from IDC

Schelley Olhava said:
"I question whether Microsoft might be coming out too soon with the next Xbox," Olhava said.

Gotta admit. It was an excellent PR move. I know several who refer to it that way, but I won't do so on this board simply because it hurts people's feelings. Like M$ instead of Microsoft.

i dunno - how can it be too soon? the worst thing that happens is you give people up to a years drop on sony, have some great 1st party titles coming out when PS3 launches... you are STILL gonna catch the next gen wave, even when Sony's PS3 apparently heralds the "true" start of the next gen.

To think that people won't be interested in Halo 3 in a year or so's time sounds like madness to me.

The worrying thing is that Sony haven't even started yet, this is just the results of the teaser stuff. The DC-offensive didn't get going till the Emotion Engine talk and THOSE tech-demos.

Even more amazing is that if DoA4 really is a game from the next Xbox, one of MS most prized exclusive developers this gen for graphics is actually giving them the ammo for that claim.

I guess all the people who thought the Xbox was the *real* Dreamcast 2 were wrong. :)

Of course, the Dreamcast had some excellent games, too....

I think they are releasing it too soon. If the screenshots we have been seeing are really what games are going to be looking like it's not gonna be enough for consumers to want to pony up 300 bucks or more. If it takes a year for Halo 3 to come out or for that matter the whole Xbox 360 game library to start hitting its stride by that time we will be seeing the PS3 and Revolution coming out. If either one of those consoles live up to the hype or expectations people are saying then the 360 is in trouble. I personally and quite a few people I know are excited to see the xbox 360 more in action but it's just not exciting enough to warrant a launch purchase. Between the DS and PSP and a good years worth of game still coming out of the PS2 and Gamecube I can wait till the launch of PS3 and Revolution to see if its worth getting a 360 then. I have a sinking feeling for Microsoft thats the way the public is going to see it too unless they get something very jaw dropping and ground breaking out the door that screams and drags people into the store to buy it.

Can anyone say, without violating some type of NDA, how much software will be shown tonight vs. next week? Are they saving stuff for E3, or using everything for the TV show?

I think it's gonna be up to the first party MS games (PDZ, etc) to impress people the most.

Man, once someone from Sony PR says something, the media really run with it. Time and time again, I have to hand it to Sony, they know how to piss in anyone's pool and ruin a party ahead of time.

I predict about 3 minutes total of software being shown, and the rest of the show filled w/ celebrity interviews, etc.

Unfortunately, using the dollar sign withinn the Sony name is inacurate.

Maybe:

-$ONY

and the rest of the show filled w/ celebrity interviews, etc.

Thats what scares me. 27 minutes of fluff and pomp with a bunch of high paid fucks. :(

3 minutes of actual substance. :(

"$ONY!"

surely that should be

S-NO-Y

WHERE THE Y IS A YEN SIGN
OH HA HA HA ISNT THAT AMAZINGLY FUNNY?
......

I'm a network design engineer, and at work we all use "M$". I guess none of us grew up. Actually everyone uses it in good fun, and noone gets their panties in a wad...

ahah. And you think theirs no clear bias in the media folks. :lol

:|

You did notice that that was 2 financial analyst, 1 technology researcher, & Seamus Blackley, right? As in zero media (other than the one who wrote the article, of course, which was mostly pro Xbox)

Want some cheese with that wiiiiiiiinnnne? :D

well, MS does have the obvious problem that for people that the jump between xbox and x360 will look less impressive than PS2-PS3, simply because they are launching more closely together and had better hardware in the first place.

Oddly, PS3s advantage could be the relative shitness of the PS2.

Other upcoming Sony comments:

"What's an X...BOX? 360?"

"The next generation of games will begin when PS3 launches, get used to it!"

"Microsoft is boasting about their 'HiDef Era' HA HA HA...and they don't even have a HiDef disc format HA HA HA!"

"Wait for PS3, buy a PSP to tide you over."

Speak for yourseld Blackley. Sony, deliver us ftom the next-gen console ghetto :P

LOL! That's funny just for the fact that fanboys are gonna run with it for some time to come now. Hopefully something at E3 squashes it once and for all. But I think this might be Xbox360's "WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!!!". Remember that from the PS2 launch? :lol I think that was from a fellow GAFfer no less. Fanboys will say all sorts of nonsense, no matter how good or bad the game looks. So I say pay them no mind. Mollie Smith has certainly gotten a lot of bang for the buck with that comment though. PEACE.
