Thinking about the PS3 controller shape...

TTP

Have a fun! Enjoy!
... I was wondering, if they stick with that banana-shape how are they gonna deal with the actual controller icons currently used in the XMB as well as on PSP games packages?

I'm talking about this

and this

I mean, if PS3 is gonna use the same XMB iconography that shape wouldn't make sense would it?

Heh, good point.

I still maintain that the final PS3 controller is going to be very, very different than that banana-rang prototype.

It is just an icon! It doesn't need to correspond to the actual controller shape, I think people will still get the idea that that icon means 'the controller'.

of course they would. But still.. I dunno, there is a puzzling contraddiction in there in terms of visual comunication. Oh well, we'll see :)

I honestly believe the final design will be this...

Sony is just giving there engineers something to do in the mean time :)

I've worked for several years in quality assurance for console games. It's NEVER "just an icon". Everything has to match their strict standards. Just showing a triangle or circle shape to represent the button to press isn't enough. It must be the exact color as well. Yeah, most people with a normal IQ could understand that they mean the Triangle button when a screen displays a gray triangle with the context of a button that must be pressed surrounding it. However, Sony strictly requires that it must be green. Their requirements are just as strict for controller shape and details. They want to pound their brand into the gamer's brain, even at minute levels such as this. BUT, I don't think this means their controller will definitely be a DS2 clone.

I reckon the PS3 pad design looks horrid, but there's no doubt in my mind that it will be much more comfortable than the regular Dual Shock. It might even include analogue sticks that aren't 80 per cent dead area.

Actually DS2 stick has no deadzone to speak of (even when centered, there's slight tremor-movement detected, like with pretty much every analog stick really).

I know. Realistically, it's not so much that it has a dead area - it's just that I prefer analogue sticks with a little more resistance. To me, DS2 sticks just feel too loose.

I think that just depends on the fact that they are a tad bit taller that Xbox controller ones. Which is why I like the smaller onse seen on the "conceptual" PS3 controller.

Also, Xbox ones movement is quite smooth while you can feel something impending a 100% fluid movemente on the DS ones. The logitech PS2 wireless controller is as smooth as the Xbox one. But this may very well depend on the usage. My standard DS is really old :)

Yeah, mine's quite old too come to think of it. My favourite analogue sticks so far have been the ones on the chunky first-generation Xbox pads, though I wasn't keen on the pad itself. I quite like the N64 sticks as well, though that stupid funnel design under the stick meant that they soon felt all gritty.

yeah i agreee - for example, the psp has no controller, but use the "standarized" icon.

yeah, but it's an icon that represents "game" now. Will it be as representitive of game after 5 years of bananas? I feel sorry for whoever is in charge at finding a solution to this issue. Sure u can't change the icon at every controller iteration, but yet that icon has to match the controller somehow.

We've been seeing the unfortunate Dual Shock design for over 10 years now. No one is going to forget within 5, particularly not the older-skewing gamers most likely to own a PSP.

"We" is not what the marketplace is all about tho. There will be a new breed of young gameplayers whos 1st system is gonna be the PS3. You know, a new generation.

Ironically, that icon will remind them of the Xbox 360 controller more than the PS3 banana one.

PS3? Assuredly PS3 games and gear will have their own stupid-boomerang-shaped icons. Again, what's the big deal?

Damn, the deal is how are you gonna have consistency between the PSP branding and the PS3 one if controllers icon in the respective XMBs are different?

Edit: not to mention you are gonna have all those sweet PS1 and PS2 games with their sweet DS/DS2 controllers layouts/images in the control setting screens runnign on the banana controller system adding more confusion to the mix.

Well, first, what the hell is an XMB. Second, who cares if they have slightly different icons? Within the context of either packaging, it will be immediately obvious what the icon represents. Third, there might be a chance that the PS3 is backwards compatible with the Dual Shock and/or Dual Shock 2, thereby assuring that the unfortunate DS design will not quite decline into obscurity, as I'd like. :)

Translation: I don't know what the fuck im talking about, so it is not important.

The XMB point is a good one; however I think that the DS icon will be used as a games icon for backward compatability with a new one for ps3 games, just as different disc colors were indicative of different game types in the PS2 interface.

No, really, what's an XMB?

I think it's just an abbreviation for the PSP interface. It originated in the PSX and some Sony TVs. Stands for Cross Media Bar. Seems likely a variant of it will be adopted for PS3.

Well, if there will be playable stuff at TGS, then I think Sony will get some real feedback on just how bad the new design is.

Can't they just update the icon with a firmware update?

What controller has stiffer sticks than the DS2 becuase my S-controller and Cube controller do not have more resistance. Imo the resistance of the DS2 is perfect even the DS2 was ok. Do you all have heavily callassed thumbs?

I didn't even really notice the shape until now. I've seen it, but didn't pay it too much attention, I wouln't really care, just give me my games and I'm happy.

People are exaggarating. IMO it looks much nicer than DS2.

I must be the only one but the DS3 looks so much more comfortable then the DS2. The DS2 is too small and cramps your hands after hours of gameplay, the shoulder buttons on the DS2 were the worst design decisision ever. I dont know about you guys but in a controller I prefer comfort to an estheticly pleasing design.
