This is normal in Japan?

Materialism (advertising), ageism (leaving the elderly alone to rot), crabs-in-a-bucketism (always watch out for #1), the pageantry of any given NFL game, and more.

I don't watch TV, so when I do witness the non-stop faceblast that is television commercials, I get very weirded out and like I'm watching something alien. Like this dystopian satire come to life:

Capitalistic Materialism and Ageism go hand and hand. You cant have the youth respect there Elders less you risk them being informed about the hollow pursuits of materialism.

What I’d like to know is why Japanese schoolgirls wear these ultra-short mini skirts. It’s especially weird considering they wear school uniforms; does this mean those mini skirts were officially approved by a bunch of horny dudes in the Japanese ministry of education or something lol? There are lots of other countries with school uniforms after all, and none of them have these kinds of ultra short skirts. Not that I’m complaining, it’s just weird that schools would allow this as part of their dress code.

That was an healthy dose of things we didn't needed to know dude :lollipop_grinning_sweat:
My reasoning goes as follows: The Japanese are consistently doing it and seemingly enjoying it. We (Western) people are not physiologically different from them. Therefore, any aversion to doing it seems to stem from things other than physiology (which is dumb). Therefore, consider it a PSA. If even one person's quality of life is improved as a result, it will have been worth it. I don't think they would look back and say they'd rather not have read about it.

The hero we don't deserve.

The fact that we don't talk about getting our nipples sucked doesn't mean that we don't enjoy our nipples being sucked :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I think we need a poll.

They roll them up at the waist.

Schools can't police them all the time (though some try very hard). The uniforms aren't generic: they have to get them from the same supplier. Well, they are for trousers, shirts, etc. but all the schools will have the same policies there.

It happens in the UK too (and likely many other countries), though in UK there was at least a phrase where girls tried to get away with the tightest skirts they could (generic , buy wherever uniform policy helped them there).

I generally saw attractive women just about everywhere in Tokyo but it also could be because they don't have a massive number of obese women everywhere like in the U.S.

I was so close to just all of a sudden taking a vacation to Japan in two weeks due to the airplane ticket prices, even hunted down my passport, but I don't want to stay there for a week or 2 but for 2 to 3 months.
The usd to jpy is awesome right now (if you are heading there). We just got back from a 3 week stay and when I bought yen it was 141 per usd. I almost needed to buy another suitcase for the stuff we brought back (snacks, sake, crane game stuff)

Its a 10/10 place to visit if you love hiking, nature, temples and of course the cuisine etc. During my 3 years there I mostly stuck to rural areas for trips and hiked up many a mountain and witnessed some of the most beautiful sights in my life thus far. The food was simple but so satisfying too.
100% agree. My wife is from Kanagawa and she grew up in the city. I told her if she ever wanted to move to Hide Takayama or the outskirts of Nagano, I would sell the house TODAY. But unfortunately she is not a fan of living in the sticks.

I can empathise with her.

Living in rural anywhere can be tough. That rural Japan can be beautiful doesn't make up for it. Not to mention, anywhere in almost all of rural Japan that isn't a forested mountain has a heavy human presence.

Plus, no cinemas in rural Japan. Fuck that.

So not sure if you are into anime but my ideal place to live would be the Non Non Byori. My wife said F THAT lol

I honestly figured that was fake. Glad it is too. Like lewd stuff is cool and all but if i'm going to a McDonalds, i'm not going to be eating pussy. Or anything, really. Mcdonalds food fucking sucks.

Japan's culture isn't as weird as much as it is stuck in old ways that are starting to become extremely damaging for the country in recent times.

Can't agree with that. Japan is more normal than the US.
Where Japan is still heavy on culture and respect, the US has become a radicalised version of its normal-self.

Because Japan's a lot more conformist. The US brands itself as the country of freedom so naturally people are going to act however they please. I'm confident that even to other countries the US looks quite weird. In Japan doing anything you do in the US would get you immediately ostracized and shunned.
It can be as justified as talking loudly on a phone in the train or not giving up your seat for an elder/pregnant. It can be as ridiculous as having naturally blonde hair, or having a beard. Any form of self expression in that country will get you made fun of even moreso than any other area in the world.

And to Clarify, i'm NOT an expert on Japanese culture (unlike some other people on this forum, LOL). this is just the conclusion i've come up with watching many videos on the subject.

Define 'extremely damaging'.

While there is too much regimen and a fair amount of prejudice and stereotyping of anyone not Japanese... there is a lot of social harmony and an immense amount of respect of others.

Having a very diverse society is great and all... but it all too often comes with division and lack of integration. Even in ones where integration has happened well; I always feel like there's a lack of respect for others.
