This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

Three questions...

  1. Did Capcom USA or Capcom Japan develop SF4 and MvC3?
  2. Where did the term "Scamco" originate from?
  3. In Demon Souls, what is the purpose of the ghostly figures (other players) who run past you in the dungeons? Can you interact with them besides reading their messages, or are they strictly for show?

1. Capcom Japan (together with Dimps, in SF4's case).
2. They are notorious for locking away content on the disc you buy and then selling it to you as "DLC". For instance, Ace Combat 6 had more than 70 add-ons for a total of almost $160.
3. The White Phantoms can't interact with your world, but there are also Blue and Black Phantoms. When you're in body form, you can summon other players to help you out as Blue Phantoms (blue messages). Other players can also invade your world as Black Phantoms. Watch your back!

Is Ni no Kuni confirmed for the West? Either versions? I wasn't sure it was but I was listening to an older episode of 1up's ATB earlier and they said it was in the news section but gave no reference or real details about it.

As far as I know it still hasn't been announced for the West. Seeing how almost all Level-5 and Studio Ghibli releases are localized it seems quite likely we'll get it, eventually. On the other hand, I doubt they'll translate the book.

Yeah, I didn't think so, I did some googling and couldn't find anything either. I think you're right, it probably will come at some point.

EDIT: Turns out it kind of has been announced:

This seems like a perfect thread for this question....

I want to buy another PS3, and I recently saw that Sony is going to be releasing a Silver one in Japan. That would match quite nicely in my entertainment center with my Halo Reach 360. But I'm wondering about importing one to the States. What is the situation with importing a JP PS3? Power outlets, menus, blu-ray and game regions, etc. If I can just set the XMB menus to English and go, that would be excellent, but I'm guessing it isn't that easy. Or is it?

Thanks.

PS1 disc based BC isn't possible, but games on the store are fine.

O/X are usually automatically swapped.

BluRays are often region locked.

So is it confirmed that even though they used the Tales of Vesperia logo in that blurry image, that they aren't doing a NA PS3 version? Because that's some trolling they did, as you can easily tell it's the ToV logo.

Still good news about Graces F, I guess.

Where can I/where's a good place to buy a replacement battery for a ps3 sixaxis controller?

Also, are the same batteries used in a sixaxis and a dualshock 3?

so I am getting these random css lag spikes that last 1 second. I have 20ping (doesnt fluctuate when these spikes happen) and 150-200fps (doesnt dip when I get these spikes) I am on wireless internet. Anyone have any ideas?

OMG, thanks a bunch!

One more question... Playing No More Heroes, Travis has is on fire after a fight, how do you put him out? *cries*

Sixaxis batteries at Radioshack

I've seen batteries for dualshock 3 for sale, but the sites they're sold from don't look very reputable.

Edit: here's one for dualshock 3 on Amazon, though some reviews say that it's a risk to use.

How do you guys find sales date for games? I've been trying to find sales data to prove my point in the now closed Tales thread.

All I could find was this.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=355837
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=358785

Now those prove for at least that month the sales were better on the xbox for Re5 and SFIV, but where do you go for overall stuff? Looking at Quarter Reports dosen't really hope and vg chartz is'nt to be trusted.

Am I just supposed to rely on google search to look through old npd threads? Th sales archive I think is only open to mods.

How does extra DLC for Dragon Age awakening ultimate for 360 work? Does everything come on a second disk? Is it DLC codes you have to redeem online? Is it possible to get the game used?

This faq from Street Fighter Alpha Antologies have this part

Battle Mode – When selecting Versus Mode, select the mode while holding
Triangle, X, and R2 (you can also opt to press them all immediately after you
select versus mode. NOTE: US Version users do not need to press X as the
programming of the code somehow eliminated this step.) You may need to hold the
buttons at the 'Press Start' screen, then make your choice. You'll go directly
to a fight without choosing a character. The fights will be totally random.
HOWEVER, there is a system direction menu which makes this mode shine. Within
the menu, you can pick any opponent, in any color, and completely control the
fights. You can have Ryu vs 20 Sodoms, etc. It's a very interesting mode if
you ever needed practice against a specific character or ever wanted to
completely just mess with stuff
.

And in my version it only lets you choose how random is the next fight, like picking chars and isms .. does anyone know if it is related to the region of the game or i'm missing something ?

Does anyone know of a PS3 equivalent to the wired xbox headset? I'm looking for basically the same thing, flat foam earpiece for one ear only with a mic. I'm guessing it would be usb which is fine. Of course if it's more comfortable/better quality, that will be a plus.

I don't think they have an official wired headset, but any USB headset should work.

I know that any usb will work. I just wanted some recommendations on one that might be good quality. There was a $20 headset at Best Buy but it was very uncomfortable.

Ok -- Xbox Live/DLC/Content access question:

My roommate and I each have our own gamertags. I have 1200 points on my gamertag. If I download the new First Strike DLC, will he able to access and use all the DLC fully and completely under his own gamertag?

MS says that all users on the console will be able to access it. But they're nazis, and I don't trust them.

Could someone recommend a good GBA rpg? I loved playing FFIV on a mcro for the first time and have since bought FFVI and Summon Night...still looking for Mother 3 and hopefully 1+2. Something like a western srpg would be great. Also, whats the best looking game on the system?

No, there are no good Saturn emulators.

Take a look at this thread and scroll down to the RPG section. Your best bet is probably the Golden Sun games. Keep in mind that both Rivera and Yggdra Union have enhanced PSP ports. Some people on GAF enjoyed Rebelstar Tactical Command, but I personally thought it was mediocre at best. If the Fire Emblem games weren't ridiculously expensive, I'd buy those myself.

Thanks, Golden Sun and Rivera looks really neat.

Are there any good sites/books with an indepth biography of Fusajiro Yamauchi
(Nintendo Koppai's founder)? Maybe even an elusive photo?

I searched google, but nothing really goes into detail about what he did prior to making hanafuda cards, besides being a cartoonist. Nor do they talk about his life in general.

A thought crossed my mind of writing a story based on him (no relation to "Nintendo History System").

When you buy most stuff on xbox live you get two licenses, one is the console you bought it on (so all profiles on that console can access the data) and your gamertag (so if your 360 breaks you still have permission to play content elsewhere)

Now this works on live titles fine but for DLC I have no idea, especially when it comes to stuff like halo and cod DLC, always possible the rules change there just because microsoft can be anal about it, like locked region DLC or something.

You can try it but if all fails at least your friends has the maps.

Thanks man.

We played it safe and I just had him make sure to get it with his own points under his own gamertag.

Sometimes I just wanna throw my hands up and say "fuck this gen" -- we spent entirely too much time trying to figure out license restrictions, then inputting a bunch of brutal 25-digit keys into the 360's clunky and unintuitive interface (one wrong button press wipes out the data you spent a full minute editing), and man, is the 360 dashboard ever laggy and slow. Then the download and installation began. I totally understand the frustrations of people who just have 30 minutes to play or something, and just wanna plug in and go. The bonuses of DLC and all the wonderful things added to the modern gaming experience really get taken down a peg by all the hurdles and possible pitfalls (like losing licenses due to understandable user error) to get at the game.

Not really a question but a request, since I don't want to bump an ancient thread:

If you guys remember the "regional user faces" thread:

I was wondering if anybody could either send me the PS3 face PSD template (since the link in that thread's OP is broken now) or make the Hong Kong flag (the new one!).

bC29Y.png

:P Yeah, I'm making a Hong Kong account to download the KZ3 demo :P

Thanks in advance!

The History of Nintendo. Vol.1 is the most detailed book I've read about Nintendo's early years. If you want more in-depth than that you probably have to go to Japan and do the research yourself. There are no photos of Fusajiro Yamauchi in it.

I enjoyed The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. On consoles it was sort of a western JRPG, but on the GBA it was a tactical RPG

Most of the times yes because you would have got an acheivement for it

Anyway on a more serious note, does anyone know where I can find a guide that recaps on the final fantasy 3 ds story as I want to finish it but stopped at one point during the game and haven't picked it back up for a while

Soooo...
Folding at home, that ps3 application that was supposed to cure cancer or some shit.
Anyone still doing it?! Have we found a cure?

Just curious.

I was recapping the last 4-5 years of gaming and thinking about when I 1st got my ps3 and what games I couldn't wait for. And well I just remembered someone telling me of this remarkable app that the ps3 could do while you had it running for no reason. so did everyone stop caring once decent games hit the system?

I stopped using it a few years ago after I reached an arbitrary high even number. The data is still useful for the scientific community.

With the upcoming release of Portal 2 I made a Steam account a few months back but I forgot the password. Problem is that the email address associated with my Steam Account was deactivated as I finally got rid of my shitty Bell Internet service which brings me to this. I can't get a reset email sent out as that email is deactivated so what do I do?

I've sent emails to three different gaming magazines to try to get a question answered. So far not one has given me any response at all. So I'm asking GAF...

How does GameFly work for the game companies? Do they get paid every time their game gets rented? Does GameFly pay an increased rate for their copies? Surely they can't just go downtown and buy a boatload of copies, rent them indefinitely, and then sell them after they've made months worth of revenue without kicking something back to the developers of publishers.

The reason I ask this is because I use GameFly, but I really don't want to hurt the industry that I love.

If it works anything like movie rentals, they probably both pay more for their copies and give a percentage to the publisher.

Even if that's true, not much gets back to developers, let's be honest. Publishers hurt the industry.

I just wish someone would investigate this and come back with some hard numbers. I remember Cliffy B saying something in an interview about used games and rentals fucking them over. It was when they were on that kick about the used game market ruining the industry.

Hey guys, question about Dragon Age and xbox on demand games.

Ok, a few days ago my xbox fucked up and can't read games, or barely does. I was playing Dragon Age Origins Ultimate edition when it fucked up. If I bought the games on demand version, can I still use the bonus content that came with the disc version? I don't want to buy the games on demand version and find out I can't play any of the extra content from the Ultimate cd.

Complicated question, I know, but hope you guys can help.

something I wanted to ask for quite a while

"press start to continue"

what the fuck is the point of this? why is there another compleatly unnecesary buton press required betwen starting the game and getting to the main menu?

I know old nes games had this (don't remember it from my older PC games), but usualy that was beacose there was no main menu to speak off so the thing made sense, but why do I have to endure this in 2011 when every game has a main menu?

Speaking of that: Am I the only one that's annoyed by the fact that most of the times you can press "X" at a "press start to continue"? It says press START! Not X nor square. START!!
RAAAGE!

Or maybe I'm just strange... :/

Asking for Game suggestion time!

Trying to choose between new 360 game Fallout 3, Bioshock or Mass effect.
I live in Japan and will be getting the Japanese version of the game with Japanese voice acting.

Things of help!
- Favorite game of all the time is Fallout and Arcanum, but haven't really played any rpgs(besides oblivion/ff13/ ds games) since Knights of the old republic. I enjoyed system shock 2 also.
-My time is limited.
- Does the game let you pause during cutscenes and still read the subtitles?
