If you can still read files, get them off. I think I remember having better luck using the command line when attempting to copy files off a failing disk. (It seems to access the disk less, making it lock up less)

And this has never ever helped me, but I have read that putting it in a freezer (in a sealed bag) might help. I would save that for last (if at all) since it has never worked for me.

What is a MAD video?

I usually see the word in the title of amv's and occasionally games. They also usually have great video editing.

How do trees know when to grow back their leaves? Are they genetically programmed to grow them around the exact same time every year, or can an early/late spring trigger it sooner/later? which would maybe imply they need to detect an increase in temperature, sun exposure or UV rays.

Also, I had to leave my bike at school and I won't be taking it home until Thursday. It's supposed to rain tonight until tomorrow night and I'm worried about rust... Is my bike doomed? I left it out in the rain once before and it was fine. It's full of dirt and dust from sitting in my garage for the last two seasons if that makes any difference.

why is it accepted to say "retarded" on gaf?

There was a thread on this before.

All I remember from it was someone (not a mod) saying you can't say inflammatory things regarding gender or sexuality, but somehow because a mentally handicapped person doesn't know better, it's... okay?

I don't even know, really.

Not that I mind it being allowed, it seems a little excessive to ban use of it.

Also, what do they experience in dreams since they have no visual references? Are the dreams all audio?
I read when I was younger that if they were able to see when they were young and gradually lost their sight, that their dreams are very similar to ours. If they have never had sight, then their dreams are what you'd expect. Consisting only of sound and feeling.

Hey, Just a quick question.
I'm in Japan right now. I've bought a can of FFXIII Elixer and i want to send it to my boyfriend back in Australia. But I don't know whether it can get through customs, and neither do the post office people. Its gonna cost me 2,000 yen to send. Should i risk sending it, or bring it back to Aus with me (next January)?

I was just listening to a radio program on this. They don't exactly know what people who have never seen dream. Some say they can see colours, but cant describe them.
I think this is interesting enough to warrent its own thread.

The better question is what kind of an inner voice or subvocalization does a deaf (from birth) person have?

What's the opposite of a cougar?

I mean the guy who prefers older women.

I always get food from America to Australia rather easily through the mail. I hate Australian airport customs with food products, so in my opinion you'd be better off sending it.

They stopped me to check my bags because I had colored pencils. :( They thought it was food.

I think he's talking about the end of the roll after you rip it off...

You usually see fancy toilet shapes done by hotel maids.
So now I've got to worry about origami in my ass when I am wiping on vacation?

Great.

:lol I actually meant when you tear off a few squares for wiping... instead of folding the strip of squares perfectly over itself to make it half the length but twice as thick, I fold it at a roughly 40 degree angle to make a wing-span shaped fold, that's thicker in the middle but has extra surface area on the sides where it doesn't need to be as thick... :lol :lol

how does blood pressure readings work?

When I watch tv shows and what not and they talk about blood pressure it's always a number over another number and they both seem variable (X over Y). :s

It's peak pressure over minimum pressure measured in mmHg.

I think it was before the new gaf layout, possibly after. But I used to be able to hit my username either next to a post or at the front forum screen and be able to view all my past posts. It won't let me anymore saying that I don't have sufficient privileges.

Is it just me or did this happen to everyone?

Thanks y'all.

everyone, not just you.

I was recently awarded an MSI laptop which came with an MSI version of Windows 7 pre-installed (like any other new laptop). Now, I want to format the laptop because I want it to be a clean install with none of MSI's crappy additions but I'm wondering if the Windows 7 CD Key on the bottom of my laptop is only applicable for the MSI Windows 7 installation.

The CD Key on the bottom of the laptop is labeled as follows:

Windows 7 Home Prem OA
MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL

I would have tried installing it anyway but it didn't come with an MSI Win7 installation disk... so if it doesn't work, I would be screwed.

Any help appreciated!

Thank you.

I'm trying to find some must see '80s sci-fi movies that share the same qualities of movies such as Alien, Aliens, Blade Runner, Terminator, and Terminator 2. I guess it doesn't have to be exclusive to '80s and early '90s films, but it would be nice. Any suggestions?

Nice man. I love The Thing, Predator, Robocop, and the Mad Max movies. Anyway good suggestions. I'll probably re-watch the Thing and check out the others you suggested.

Any other suggestions from anyone else? I've been in a sci-fi mood lately. :lol

Brazil is such a great movie.

And speaking of it... I was reading 27bslash6 (site name is a Brazil reference :lol), and I was wondering if any of those famous e-mail correspondences, like "Please design a logo for me. With pie charts. For free.," are real or what... he calls them articles and I can't find anything on the subject. Although, in the case of the pie chart one, I found this.

Thanks, did they say why?

I can't keep track of the stuff I say and need to go back sometimes..
It uses search but search uses a lot of bandwidth or overloads the server or something. So now we have google search for normal searching but that can't do anything like post history so it's unavailable for now. The privileges thing is because mods can access it but no one else.

Try hooking it up to a different computer, use a different cable, etc. Make sure it's not a minor hardware problem, essentially.

You may be out of luck, though. It sounds like the harddrive may not be fully functional anymore, hence the lack of accessible files.

I'm sure somebody on GAF knows more about this type of thing than I do. There are programs out there to help you recover files, but I don't know what they are.

Many blind people actually see stuff in their dreams, usually in black and white. The human brain is powerful enough to generate rough images based on input, so as long as the blind person has actually moved around a bit and felt what is near him/her, the brain can take the physical dimensions then connect them into shapes.

Depends on:

1. The location where you'll be parked.
2. How long you'll be parked there.

Judgment call, basically.
