So I'm trying to upload a video (~6 min) and it's a .avi, but it's 1.1 GB! Which video format should I convert to for a decent compression rate? I still want above average quality, so maybe .mpeg? I've heard .mp4 are small in file size but sacrifice much quality.

Also, can anyone recommend a video converter? I'm using Prism Video Converter, but its functions are limited because it's the free version.
Virtual Dub -> .mp4 or compressed .avi

Thank you! I just tried QuickMediaConverter and was about to download Handbrake. I converted the .avi to .mpeg...artifacts galore.

EDIT: I'm uploading them to Youtube, and the 1.1 GB .avi would take 9 hours to upload. I really would like the best quality and waiting for 3-5 hours is fine with me. When I used QuickMediaConverter, I tried converting to .wmv and .mpeg and they were both 10 MB. Are .mp4 and compressed .avi bigger in size (better quality)?

i noticed some dvds i have only have a 5.1 track. what happens when i watch it on a regular tv system? i dont lose any sound do i?

It just combines them into the two sound channels, so it's not like whatever was happening in rear channels will just not be there. It's not unlike what would happen to the image when watching a Blu-ray movie on SDTV.

so then how come some dvds have a separate 2.1 and 5.1 audio track? i dont just mean as an option on the dvd but in the actual disk itself. doesnt that just waste space? i noticed if i set it to 5.1 when there is a 2.1 track available, the sound is less. so is it some kind of option the dvd maker sets to have the 5.1 combine or not?

Hmm, good question. This is purely a guess because my Google searches aren't providing a good answer, but it could be a matter of an optimal stereo track not necessarily being the same as an automatically-combined 5.1 track, so they include professionally created mixes for both.

How does the Youtube partner program exactly work? Do you get paid per view, if so how much? or do you get paid per group of views, example 1 cent for every 100 views or something along those lines.

Why do many modern superbikes use an asymmetrical single headlamp for daytime running, even though they have twin headlamps? It looks stupid and assures that the bulbs will expire asymmetrically.

Did women in olden times shave their legs or did they just let the hair grow? If they shaved, how did they do it and about what percentage of them do you think did it?

Time periods I'm interested in for this question:

- Medieval times,
- Ancient Rome, when they were a dominant power (think HBO's Rome)
- also the old west

Shit was hairy. Blades only got good/cheap enough for "casual" shaving in the last 100 years.

I never understood but....why do so many horror movies get so many damn sequels?

They're cheap to make, require very little effort, have a built-in audience (that can actually expand if the series gets really long in the tooth) and there are unlimited excuses for why your villain has once again returned from the dead.

ah ok. It's hard to imagine a fanbase for Leprechan but then again they make sci-fi movie of the weeks all the time so....yeah.

I always thought that was a lifestyle choice for that era.

I hear about some organisation in the UK to do with finance that is called something like "exchecka". How do you spell this and what is it?

Pretty sure it's English/romaji with a Japanese-style IDE. Though I'd be interested in the answer too...
So ... i could understand the source code of a japanese game? (C/C++ of course)
That is kick ass.

Do people who have just been horribly internally injured or shot really tend to cough up blood so much, or is it heavily exaggerated for movies?

I believe what you mean is exchequer. I don't know anything about it, but I've linked to the Wikipedia entry.

So, I'm in Los Angeles, and my friend (who apparently has only, like, me and two other friends in the entire damned city) needs a place for her cat to stay for a few weeks due to various circumstances. My roommate is violently allergic, and the other friends aren't much help either.

You can't put the cat in a shelter because it immediately goes up for adoption, right? Are there are cheap services or something that would be willing to just take care of a cat for a week or two?

I'm glad we have this thread. Me making my own would be dumb.

Feep, check the yellow pages for "pet care" or "pet sitters." There are always kennels around for people who need their animals taken care of when they're out of town on vacation or whatever.

Many vets offer pet boarding services, and the ones I've seen are pretty affordable. I left my cat with the vet for two weeks and it only cost me ~$100.

Just got this question from a friend:

[Them]: whats the name of the song that has a really colourful video clip with like hunters and animals and stuff. its something about imagination
[Me]: do i even get an artist gender?
[Them]: its a group, the singer is a male, looks young (say teenage)

I can't really be bothered hunting around, so I thought I'd just dump it here and hope I get lucky. (Disclaimer: Artist might be Australian given we are)

After doing cardio, why do my ears pop like I'm going up in an airplane or something?
If I were a betting girl, I'd say it was because the rise in your core temperature increased your blood pressure. That plus increased HR might just have an impact on the stuff that runs through your ear canal.

Thats some black wizardry you have there :/

Question:

So does T-Mobile support the iPhone now? If so then can I go renew my contract with them and get it at a discounted price or I buy it somewhere and they just support it?

If that makes any sense at all...

How come there's such a thing as heavy rain (the meteorological phenomenon, not the game)? I mean, by the time it gets to be "heavy", why hasn't it fallen already?

Why does peeling onions make you cry?

Onions give off a gas when the cells are disrupted, making you cry.

To reduce this, either cut with a very sharp knife as to damage less cells or cut near a lit burner, this will burn off the gas emitted.

Its quantity not the size of the drops...

  • Very light rain — when the precipitation rate is < 0.25 mm/hour
  • Light rain — when the precipitation rate is between 0.25 mm/hour - 1.0 mm/hour
  • Moderate rain — when the precipitation rate is between 1.0 mm/hour - 4.0 mm/hour
  • Heavy rain — when the precipitation rate is between 4.0 mm/hour - 16.0 mm/hour
  • Very heavy rain — when the precipitation rate is between 16.0 mm/hour - 50 mm/hour
  • Extreme rain — when the precipitation rate is > 50.0 mm/hour

Sorry, I shouldn't have used the term "heavy rain". I suppose I meant "fat rain-drops". Why does one rain-drop fall when it's small and another hangs around until it's large?

Not to sound obsessed or anything ... Just wondered!

No idea, could be to do with surface contact area? Or chemical buildup??

No, he has a boner compartment built in for this eventuality.. Shooting shit down wearing a robotic suit would get anyone going.. Either that or just displays some boner killing porn on his HUD.. I imagine its granny dwarf related, but have no proof..

Why don't you blink when having a day-dream?

Tell me, it's been a mystery for years, the mental pain!

From a very reputable source...

http://www.mytelekinesis.com/clairvoy_aura.html

Ever notice that when you're daydreaming in full blast, you never blink? That shows that you're not using your eyes to see the physical realm, so they are not needed to blink. When you do use your eyes to see in the physical realm, blinking is natural and automatic, because you're using your eyes for real and blinking is needed. Here's one exercise: Sit down, get relaxed, and maybe meditate. Focus on an object somewhere in your line of vision. Don't look at it as in the physical realm; use my clairvoyance description to literally 'see with the Third Eye'. If you do this properly, you will see auras of objects or colors in front of you. If you focus back to normal vision in the physical realm, then you'll lose it. Notice how you don't blink at all... This can be used in peripheral vision (literally seeing 360 degrees and beyond) or seeing auras which I will get to now.

http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/raindropsizes.html
http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/1997-03/858795029.Es.r.html

The size of a raindrop when it falls to the ground is dependent on many factors, including the origination process of the rain itself, rainfall intensity, evaporation rates, air turbulence, and wind.

The processes that allow cloud droplets to become raindrops are very complex and not well understood. Droplets that reach 0.2 mm, the threshold for calling a drop rain, are usually heavy enough to overcome the force of ascending air that exists in every cloud. Rain can be either "cold rain", originating from melting snowflakes, or "warm rain", which evolves without the snowflakes. Cold rain has very large drops, but fewer drops overall. Warm rain contains very many, but small drops. Raindrops can range in size from 0.2 mm in diameter, to around 6 mm. Those larger than 6 mm are inevitably broken up in their fall to the earth. Raindrops are very rarely all the same size in any one rain. There are generally more small drops than large drops, but as the intensity of the rainfall increases, the number of larger drops grows. The very largest drops are found only in downpours with rainfall rates greater than 2 inches per hour.

Once a raindrop has formed and begun to fall, evaporation of water from the droplet may reduce its size, and turbulence in the air may induce further collisions and breakups either enlarging or reducing the raindrop's size. Wind can separate the drops according to size, with the larger ones falling to the ground faster, while the smaller ones are blown with the wind or the raindrops may get caught in updrafts or downdrafts within the cloud.

Super noob question time, whats the best way to resize pics to use as avatars?

I find the fastest and easiest way is to copy and paste your picture into Microsoft Word, take a guess and scale it down there by stretching the picture down through dragging the corner, then paste it into Paint to check the actual dimensions (the cursors placement gives you the pixels in the bottom right corner).

The more precise way to do it can be found in the GAF Avatar faq here. It walks you through downloading and using Gimp, a free Photoshop clone.
