I have a notebook that I write in when I'm high sometimes... there are about 50 pages worth of my mad ramblings that include invention ideas, pitches for funding on Web sites and computer application ideas, television show ideas, etc.
One of the ideas is apparently already in use, supplying power to parts of the UK.
What should I do with my notebook? Should I keep writing in it until it's full? Or should a try and work on some of the ideas? Or should I publish the pages so others can read them?

I don't think you can. I checked in the options and the only thing I found was to disable incoming messages from your friends.

Just keep writing. Write, write, write. When you're finished with the notebook, skim through it and find your best ideas. Look them up to see if one's already been invented or patented. Don't throw it away though. Keep it for memories.

would it be posible to make a water home alarm with just a few things?

I was thinking of something like this:

2mrcwo1.png

The red things are the cables. So when the water touches both of the metal pieces it connects the circuit and the alarm goes off.

Possible or complete stupidity from a electric-ignorant?

Hey guys.. I was wondering about Blackmagic Intensity pro and if it could somehow possibly work with a laptop (say MBP)?

I want to capture HD (console) gaming but don't want to have to buy or use a huge desktop computer with slot drives and all that shit.. :\

Is it doable in any way?

No, that's a desktop card.

You need to look into the Hauppauge PVR, USB to a dual core notebook will work over component.

Yep, that's the basic circuit.

Hmmm.

It could (and should) work, but it really depends on the specs of your buzzer and the water - not to mention that your electrodes will be pretty charged up the whole time, which means there will be plenty of oxides and other chemical impurities on their surface, adding even more randomness to the outcome (and possibly toxic metal ions/compounds to the water - goldplated or stainless steel only please!). As you can see from the site above there's also the factor of how much of the electrodes are covered in water. It's a complete crapshoot, to be honest, and there's no way to calibrate the circuit. Keep in mind that this is a great way to produce oxyhydrogen, which in confined rooms may accumulate over time. It's a comically small risk, but it's there.

The parts needed for a rather reliable sensor are far less than fifty cents per "watchdog circuit".

Here, look at this for example (ignore the ads and whining).

...or this.

However, may I suggest a far less dangerous method? A float switch. This one may cost a teensy bit more (unless you build it yourself) - but no current will ever come close to the water, eliminating any possible danger.

At last, as a curiosity:

The sugar cube melts away when in contact with water. This is used to trigger a switch. I do believe that idea is awesome in its simplicity. :lol

I know it's a desktop card, but i'm saying is there some way to get it to run on a laptop, perhaps using an adapter of some kind?

Doubtful I suppose but meh... wouldn't even work with an iMac would it. :lol

Yeah I believe you're out of luck there.

Not interested in the Hauppauge? Or you already have access to the blackmagic? The price is comparable.

I've had that same thing happen several times before myself but it would always just stop after awhile. In fact I usually didn't even notice it was gone for awhile :lol

Actually is not water but piss. I want to know exactly when our cat pisses out of the litterbox to see if she has a pattern as she has been going worst and worst lately and I thougth I could make one like that in order to know exactly when she does and why (Maybe because she is retailating for not getting food everytime she asks)

So I wanted a cheap alarm with a simple aaa battery. That things doesn't have a lot of voltage so there is no risk involved right?

Something with some styrofoam as a flotation device might work as well.

The water will raise the styrofoam block instead the cup and the two metal pieces will form the circuit.

Edit:

D: I thought you were protecting against flooding or something. Urine is a pretty good conductor, isn't it?

Thanks for the help--it's been happening for about 6-7 hours today. I think it's eye strain from spending a lot of CPU time. I'll get some eye drops and take some time off when I get home (since i work 9 hours per day in front of the cpu).

Hello everyone!

I was wondering... Can i change my email from my GAF account? Does it have to be validated like the first time? Can i use gmail maybe? Thanks!

I need to know this too. The email I verified my account 3-4 years ago now belongs to my former company. It would be nice to update it (not that I'm going to last here much longer, either).

I switched mine from my old school address to my new school address with no ill effects. I dunno about switching to gmail, though. My old address was defunct for about a year before I switched.

Er. doesn't urine conduct electricity? Like, a lot? Meaning that if kitty pees near the electrodes, kitty can get shocked (the ol' "don't whiz on the electric fence" issue)?

Doesn't sound like something I would try.

Mythbusters say nay to the whizing on electric fence. It doesn't work, as pee is not a continuous stream really and as with most liquids just comes out in a bunch of blobs of liquid so electricity doesn't conduct all the way back.

But if that cat got shocked for not pissing where it’s suppose to, might it stop doing that? Could wind up being a positive thing.

I haven't really looked into it too much, but from what I understand I can't play using HDMI, right? :\

would a simple aaa battery be enough to do anything at all to a cat?

itxaka:

Does the cat always pee at the exact same spot? Otherwise you'll have to lay out an awful lot of bare wire, and that means the cat will probably trigger the alarm when approaching and shuffling them together, ether by accident or while investigating the odd glittery stuff. Maybe even when stepping on two wires, since the fleshy part of paws can conduct electricity too.

I don't know how your cat will react to being beeped at. Some of these buggers can be mighty vengeful. Two cats I know would be delighted to have an excuse to relieve themselves on their owners pillows.

This has a seriously low wife acceptance factor.

I fear you have your work cut out for you. Godspeed!

Here's another question of mine.. what is the size of an internal hard drive for a Mac Pro? I'm talking about the old Macs, the ones that didn't have Intel chips yet. 2.5"? 3.0"? Thanks. :D

[EDIT] Never mind, it's 3.5". :)

After chatting with someone on MSN for a while, I get the annoying ass "The following message could not be delivered to all recipients" error. I've tried signing out and back in, but it doesn't fix it and it happens with all contacts.

Anyone know what's going on?

That used to happen to me A LOT time ago, really annoying.

Why can't we have peace on earth? I know it's simplistic but I just asking myself why can't everyone just love each other, be happy, and not try to kill each other off?

Sadly I already know the answer but still ;___;

Could someone help me out with the name of a song? I've been hearing it over the sound system for awhile, but can't figure out what it is. I didn't quite catch the lyrics clearly, but the singer is male and sings something that sounds like:

"Cold-blooded/cold-hearted" one or the other, and "slipping away"? I'm incredibly confused. I know the tune to it, but can't remember the name. Sad thing is I was in the process of trying to remember the name of a different song when this came on. Now I forgot the one I was trying to remember before this. This is how songs get stuck in my head. :lol

Nah, the song I'm thinking of is a variation of hard rock. The dude is like wailing those two particular phrases in the song, but it might not be those exact same words. The phrases are pretty close together though. Da dun dun, da dun na na na. The beat is kind of like that during that particular segment. The lyrics literally sound like "Cold-hearted", *something* "slipping away" But is probably something else. Heard it during lunch when everyone was screaming and shouting, drowning out the song. :( Sorry if I'm not of any help. Thanks for giving it a shot though! :D

"Stupid questions that don't deserve their own threads"

Hence I asked here, jackass.

I come from a society where most people don't own guns (instead we have samurai swords and ninja stars).

The only exposure I had to guns is when I lived in the US for 5 years and that was a long time ago. That was the only time I held/shot handguns and shotguns and it's not something I would want to do as a form of habit.

So yes, I'm ignorant about guns.

That's nice. But even after Cyan answered your question, your next post still put forward the opinion that cops should aim for limbs.

ey people, need your help here.

I need to track down a GAF thread which was about some new music editing software, with new technology. In the OP there was a link to the site of the company who was developing this software, and a video in it, where the creator explained how it worked and showed some examples, etc. It was from last year, I think, around June maybe. Or maybe 2007, though I don't think so.

If the thread is untrackable, maybe you can help me with the video..

Yep always in the same goddamn spot, a corner in the bathroom. That is why I thougth a small thing like what I wrote would be helpful as I can duck tape it to the corner.

Oh, and the cat already started pissing on the bed so I don't think she is gonna retaliate anymore than that :P

Is that URL a joke? I can't access it :)

Q: I'd like to record video/audio from my PS3. I play on a monitor but could connect to a TV for recording purposes. I'd like a minimum of 720P video quality, but I read that getting a basic composite recorder is more than enough for uploading to YouTube etc.

What are some things I should note? Any recommendations?

What would cost more electricity: a fridge filled with stuff, or empty? Of course it would first take a lot of power to get everything you put in the fridge to get the temperature of the fridge, but once it's there, what would cost more electricity, keeping the objects cool or keep an empy fridge (air) cool? In other words, is it easier to keep air cool or objects?

I have a new webcam for my desktop, Windows XP SP2 , and I can't make it work on MSN , the microphone works ok but the video nothing nada.

Some details, I bought the camera in China so it didn't come with any driver cd or something, you think it's driver problem or what?

btw, the pc recognize the camera but when I try to connecto with someone else it doesn't work

If it stays closed and you don't have any heat source inside the fridge, the temperature will be changed by the leaks from the sides. This will not be effected by what's inside.

But if you just need to have it stand around without anything in it, why not turn it off? :lol

"What's the worst that could happen?" :-O
Tempting fate 101, Lesson 1: Don't do it.

Kidding aside: Try the beeper, then.

Anyway, if the cat has been peeing in a particular spot the whole time, might it be a prudent course of action to move its litter box to that location?

Also: Check if the cat suffers from a kidney/bladder/urinary tract infection.

Have there been any changes in your cat's diet or changes in the type of litter you use? Your brand of disinfectant/cleaning stuff may influence it too. Since it's a bathroom... did you change your perfume/deodorant/whatever else might leave a strong scent?

This issue might even warrant a new thread IMHO, gaf is full of cat owners. Not me though, I'm just your average dog owner.

Just curiosity :). Right now it's crazy full because I bought some 5 liter kegs of hefen-weiss beer. But usually there's close to nothing in my fridge except some ketchup and eggs or something. Was wondering what would cost more electricty over a period of time, more or less empty fridge or filled fridge with stuff in it for a long time.

I have a windows 7 question. (I'm pretty good with computers, but sometimes I'm a little bit of a noob, so bare with me here.)

So I already have vista and I want to upgrade to windows 7. I also want to wipe my hard drive clean when I do this. Will I be able to wipe my hard drive clean and upgrade to windows 7 if I just buy the windows 7 upgrade? I also do not have a vista CD (but have the CD Key)... and vista is currently installed.. is this going to be a problem?
