Don't feel like making a new thread for this, but, what's the best way to minimize the grain you get when you can in magazine images in Photoshop. I'm trying to create a collage with some book covers but they have that moire look to them.

That's because it IS a moire pattern. You're scanning in a probably high resolution so you're going to pull in the dot patterns used by the 4 color plates when printed to make the color.

Gaussian blure will probably solve most of you troubles.

Thank you sir.

My question will soon leave the realm of this thread and enter the plains of PM. Are there any gaffers out there willing to help me make a Magic: the Gathering deck? If you're willing to help, then please pm me.

How do I resize an avi file in order to make it fit in a cd? I've tried overburn with CDBurnerXP but my file is like 1mb more than the cd can fit.

Apparently there have been some good questions asked here but I cannot continue that trend:

Does anyone know if electronics(iPods, specifically) have good deals on black friday? My sister really wants an iPod and I thought I'd persuade her to wait until black friday, because I thought maybe they had deals for those. Answers?
Yup. There's always great deals on Black Friday. You just have to get up extremely early to get all the good stuff. People actually camp outside the store. It's usually always the electronics that go quickly first.

Question: what happened to those green or red boxes next to our names on the forum, like the (neutral) and stuff boxes?
They only live in your profile now! :O

So I just remembered a scene from a movie I know I've seen semi-recently, but the title is escaping me and I don't have much to go on. One of the characters is an inventor and we see a montage of him working really hard on constructing a mysterious new device, but we don't know what it actually is until it's revealed late in the film. It's a rocking chair with a dildo attached to the bottom. What film is this?

I'm pretty sure VirtualDub can do this pretty easily...maybe even AutoGordianKnot, but I'm not sure.

is there a place where i can upload large (500mb-800mb) video files so a friend can watch them on the web?

i used zshare which is ok but i hate the compression they use for videos. it's very 'pixely'.

so pretty much i need a website like zshare with no to little compression.

Why hasn't there been a photoshop tennis thread? Seems like the concept would be perfect for GAF. On the other hand, it probably would get clogged up with memes really quick.

If you're scanning the covers yourself, look for a desreening option in the scan software.

If not, from Photoshop, use the Despeckle filter if the moire isn't too pronounced but if you still see it you may need to use Reduce noise afterwards to clean up the remaining moire. I prefer the Despeckle over Gaussian Blur as it preserves more detail.

If it's really bad you can try using this technique - be warned it's not for the Photoshop novice and is probably over-the-top for what you need but works like a dream and has saved me so many hours cleaning up images.

Karadzic court case due to resume

The genocide and war crimes trial of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic is due to resume in The Hague, a day after it was adjourned.

But a legal adviser for Mr Karadzic told the BBC he would again refuse to attend, as he still needed at least nine months to prepare his defence.

Why can't they just pull him out of his cell and put him in front of the court? Why is he allowed to refuse to attend the trial?

hey, i have a question.
I am going to Japan for a homestay next year, and i want to buy a laptop. Im hoping it will last me not only the trip, but through uni as well. Problem is - i'm not sure if i can recharge it. I live in Aus, and the power here is quite different to Japan apparently? So, should i buy one here or there? (baring in mind english would probably be my prefered language to operate the computer on).
What are the chances of my host family having a wi fi connection i can hook into?

Also, if i take my DS can i buy a jap charger or should i just buy an adapter? what is better?

Usually for laptops, the transformer (i.e. the brick on the power cord) that comes with them automatically adapts to different voltage systems. So for example, I can recharge my US-bought laptop in Europe no problem. All you need in this case is an adaptor so your plug will fit in the wall (like the one the poster after you links to).

The transformer that comes with the DS *doesn't* convert voltages, so you'll need to find a new charger.

In general, you can tell by looking at the transformer: if it says something like `AC 100-240V, 50-60Hz', it will convert. If it just has a narrow voltage range (AC 220-240V in the case of Australia), then you'll need to buy a new charger.

For the DS, you can just buy a power cable in Japan.

What the boxy plug does is convert from 220v to 5v (or whatever the DS needs). The japanese plug will convert from 100v to 5v.

Just to add, besides laptops, most cell phone chargers can accept 100-240. PSP too (at least older models, it may have changed)

When I said `you'll need to find a new charger', I meant you'll need to buy one in Japan. Sorry if this wasn't clear.

Another alternative is just to buy a dual charger like this, which will automatically adjust to the regional AC voltage.

Hey GAF, this definitely doesn't deserve its own thread, but I need a little help. Can anybody write a step-by-step guide on how to convert an .avi to a DVD? I already have Nero Startsmart and DVD Shrink 3.2.

I've been frustrated by this for a long time and I just need a checklist because something always goes wrong--the most recent thing being that it says the file is too big to burn. That's dumb.

I've always just used WinAVI. Click, wait, done.

thankyou ^^
so if i buy a new charger and plug it in to an Aus ds, it won't short out or anything??

Comic book questions:
  • Is Bruce Wayne still dead?
  • Does the world still know Spidey's identity after Civil War?
  • Is Spawn still uh... going on, or did his counter finally reach zero years ago?
  • Scott Pilgrim, is it worth investing into?
  • What's Masamune Shirow been up to?

My internet is going kinda slow, should I break down and clear my cookies? Logging back in everywhere is such a pain.

Should having 8 or more children be a considered a mental disorder?

Octo-mom, John and Kate and the Duggar family all seem to indicate yes,

By that definition the majority of Africa would be mentally ill which could be considered racist. Are you racist?

I wouldn't really call this a stupid question, but I'm feeling pain in my arm after getting a flu shot. Is this normal?

If you got the shot in your arm, I would say so. I've had pain in my arm after all kinds of injections.

The creepiest thing is when you sleep on your arm and, unaware that you have done so, wake up without any feeling in it. I thought I'd had a god damned stroke.

Is it just a little sore? If so, then yes, it's fine. It does right into the muscle, so your arm usually ends up being a bit tender a couple of days.

Yeah it's only a little sore, but whenever I raise my arm up or down, I can definitely feel the pain a lot more.

Bad Signs: Giant purple bruise; tiny red lines stemming from the injection site, swelling of injection site, pus, high fever and nausea.

Having your arm be sore after something gets injected into it? (Basically, a liquid punching your muscle in a targeted hit)? Based on what you describe, not a big deal. Apply some heat to the muscle and drink lots of fluids (keep hydrated and relax the muscle).

I'm no good with TVs and stuff, but on my parents tv... watching sky, it just says "HDMI" in the corner. I turn on my PS3, and it says "1125p" for the main menu, and various weird ones for the games (like "768p" I think).

Why the fuck is everything coming out weird for it?

The chances of getting a coin flip to land on heads 10 times in a row is 0.1%, right? (50%^10)

Now what are the chances that you land on head 10 times in a row at least once in a series of 1000 coin flips? How do you calculate that?

batbeg said:

My guess would be that "your" TV has a "HD ready" display with an odd resolution. I seem to remember some TVs were sold with 768p panels.

If the scaling algorithm isn't all that bugfree you'll probably get those odd resolutions. 1125 sounds near 2x PAL resolution...

Yes, and why did you want to know that?

In a row of 1000, there are 1000-10 (990) rows of 10.
1-(2^10/2^990), or, extremely fucking probable.
eh, let's just say 0.1*990 = 99%

Why do Gun Nutjobs who live in outlying suburbs, INSIST on posting mildly racist retarded comments after ever crime news story on every major urban City's web page? Go look if you don't believe me.

Anasui Kishibe said:

Yes.

Incorrect good sir!

1: There are 991 series of 10. (1 in 10, 2 in 11, ... 991 in 1000.)
2: So if I had 10,000 rows of 10, I'd have a 1000% chance?

In 1 10: (10H) = .5 ^ 10.

In 2 10s: (T, 10H; 11H; 10H, T) = (T, 10H) + (10H, H) + (10H, T)

(10H, T) + (10H, H) = (10 H), so we have:
(T, 10H) + (10H, H) + (10H, T) = (T, 10H) + (10H)

= (.5 * .5^10) + (.5^10)
= .5^11 + .5^10.

Figure out 3 10s and see if you can find the mathemagical patterns.

Or you could be sneaky.
You know that the odds of it happening are equal to 1 - odds of it not happening.

Odds of it not happening in 1: 1 - .5^10 = 0.9990234375.
Odds of it not happening in all 991 series of 10? 0.9990234375 ^ 991 = 0.37974842271547908622425183355362.

Sitting here with an unopened copy of Borderlands(ps3) and I just finished playing the Ratchet and Clank demo. I just realized I want this game. Should I...
a. Return it and trade it in for Ratchet.
b. Keep it, rent ratchet.
c. Keep it, buy Ratchet later after price drop(or next time they have a sale)

I'm tempted dude.. then again Borderlands has MP and PvP. Ratchet's complete lack of online is weighing heavy on my decision. I know I can beat it in one rental.. but I've bought every insomniac game this gen :(
