An online friend that I only talked to via places like FB and AIM, and over a few texts, recently died from cancer. I was caught off guard by this news and I've been taking it pretty badly. But the thing is, I never met this person face to face. Is it wrong to be shaken up by anything pertaining to e-friends, or do you think it's possible for an online friendship to be strong too?

This is terrible news from anyone you relate to, whatever the means.

I think so too, it just seems strange because the only deaths I've dealt with personally were all people I knew face to face. We had a mutual friend, who I do know face to face, but we had a falling out some time ago. I'm sure she's devastated since this was her best friend, but I don't know how to go about consoling someone that doesn't even talk to me any more. I'd like to, though. She lost a really cool person.

I know if I lost one of my close friends who I game with I would be devastated as well. I have some friends that I have known for years. A strong bond is a strong bond no matter if it's in person or online. There is nothing wrong with being upset about losing someone you only know online.

Does anyone know where samus i am's avatar is from:

It's so mesmerizing. I could stare at it all day. Is that the girl from Community?

Bonus question: Does anyone know what she's saying?

why is dry catfood, and dogfood for that matter, shaped like fish, stars and little animals? I get chicken nuggets for kids and animals crackers , i just don't see the point in my cat eating fish-shaped dryfood.

Yup, that is Alison Brie. No idea about the other questions.

This. Regardless of whether or not you met the person, a bonds a bond.

ok so, I'm in an Intro to Business class right now and my group needs to come up with an idea for our fake business project. My group members are boring and can't come up with anything- not even an idea, so I am here asking you guys for help. We need an "original, new idea" but we dont need any specifics (we dont need to actually know how to make the thing).

Any ideas?

Online relationship counseling. Seriously.

thats a good idea. maybe i'll call it "suck-it" :lol

also, i guess i didnt mention it, but its supposed to be a "good" not a "service", so counseling is out =/ good idea, though

Market your "suck-it" vacuum cleaner as a "learning toy" for children.

By putting "learning" on a child's toy it automatically triples the price. Then have the vacuum cleaner say things like "get a toy that's purple" or "suck up a toy that starts with a L". I don't know how to teach the vacuum cleaner to check the answer, but seriously, you'd make tons of money if you could.

No. Even though you never met in person, they're still a friend, and it always hurts to lose friends.

I downloaded a video that I wanted to stream to my 360, but it's in MPG format. Is there any simple way to convert it to another format that 360's will stream?

Why is it that in TV shows/movies, some people don't clap to the beat of the music? Some people are clapping to the beat and others are just clapping wildly as if they're deaf.

It annoys the shit out of me.

Because the music is dubbed over in editing and probably not the same music played during the scene, if any music was played at all.

My question; all my folder and file names have disappeared in My Documents, and I dont know how to get them back. View -> Choose Details and 'Name' is already ticked.

I have a question. When you people havea question, is the first place you go to honestly NeoGaf? Or do you ask somebody else first?

Or maybe 360's can stream mpg's I don't really know, but what I do know is that the video is not showing up on my 360 when I open the folder it's in from my 360.

A stupid/junior question: Why do so many people put 'age' in their thread titles? A lot of times it doesn't even make sense. Is there a back story to this or is just a case of monkey see monkey do?

so I have to know, why is it when I skip breakfast I tend to only be a little hungry before lunch but when I actually have breakfast (unless it's huge) I'm starving before lunch?

About the -age thing, neogaf used to be gaming-age.

GAF = Gaming-Age Forums

These are technically the forums for the site Gaming Age, specifically for gaming talk. If someone wants to make a thread about a specific topic, they sometimes put ___-age.

Fun fact: These forums were Gaming Age Forums until about 2006 or so, when it was suddenly changed to NeoGAF. There's a thread here somewhere when it all happened.

Neo = no longer gaming age forum

I recently graduated from university with a bachelors of science in computer engineering and am job hunting. I've worked for almost two years through a coop in the government and live in Canada. Any ideas on what I should be asking for a starting salary at a full time job?

I want to buy an unlocked sidekick from ebay for my wife as her sister has found text messaging and my wife is getting tired of texting via 10-key. When I receive the phone and put the card in, what happens? Or rather, what do I want to happen?

Does anybody know where I can find a coat like this? Been having a real tough time; Sometimes finding the simplest things are the hardest to find. :lol

Prefererably in size small, thanks.

Monster has a salary calculator. It provides a decent estimate.

Given that you've just graduated, go on the low-to-mid end.

My friend's primary browser is Google Chrome. While I'm about 90% of the way to converting him to firefox, he asked me to try chrome out and see if I like it. I used it for about 10 minutes or so at his house, and it wasn't that bad, so I've been thinking about trying it on my own computer.

The only problem is, I'm a bit concerned over it being a Google product. Since pretty much all of its other products send tons of information about you to their servers, I'm not sure if I want to use Chrome.

Exactly what information does Chrome send to Google's servers about your usage?

Does it send history, settings, saved passwords, and other information like that, or is it just limited to stuff like google searches?
reposting this. I'd like to give Chrome a try, but...

I would imagine it is highly illegal for them to send info about passwords to their servers. My main beef with them is that IMO it's not really faster than Firefox when my internet is under heavy load (ie downloading something at 768Kb/s on usenet).

What happens when you spell the word 'Haiti' incorrectly to that 90990 number? Will it still count if you type Hatey?

Is there a Firefox extension that will rescale images to fit my browser window?

The text on most pages is too small for me to read so I ctrl+ a couple times, but when I enter some threads I'm greeted with huge ass pictures that I have to horizontal scroll to see. Worse still is the textbox is scaled to the huge ass images and I have to H.scroll to read the text. UGH!!!

EDIT: Heh, just answered my own question in 5 seconds! View > Zoom > Zoom Text Only. Sweet.

Why is Roman Numeral 8 VIII and not IIX?
I think it's because you can only subtract 1 number at a time in a set.

When i scan a drawing i made into my scanner, why does it look really good while it's loading, and then when its finished it reverts it back to this shitty looking setting? I've treid resetting all the scan settings, that just makes it look worse than the scan settings ive tried.

Why do O/T posts count towards the post count on GAF when most other forums they don't? (i mean individual's post counts).

Differences, I mean hell in other forums there is spam threads where people whore it out to make there e-peen bigger and show it off. Here there really isn't.

i read someone mention a website a while ago... it lets you check boxes of the programs you want after you reformat and then it automatically downloads them all for you... any ideas?

Why do soap operas look weird compared to all other tv shows? Different cameras? Different lighting? I'm completely baffled...

I wondered about this for the longest time. I think Yahoo Answers said that they use crappier cameras to save money or something.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_interpolation

The "video" look side effect is also commonly referred to as "Soap Opera Effect" after the way those shows looked, having been shot on cheaper 30Hz video instead of regular broadcast equipment or film.

and more:

The visual quality of a soap opera is usually lower than prime time television shows due to the lower budgets and quicker production times involved. This is also because soap operas are recorded on videotape using a multicamera setup, unlike primetime productions which are usually shot on film and frequently using the single camera shooting style. Because of the lower resolution of video images, and also because of the emotional situations portrayed in soap operas, daytime serials make heavy use of closeup shots. As of 2009, The Young and the Restless and General Hospital are the only US daytime serials shot in High Definition. All My Children and One Life to Live plan on transitioning to High Definition starting in 2010, upon moving to new studios (AMC to a new production facility in Los Angeles, and OLTL to All My Children's current Manhattan studios).
