This is my disc drive on my laptop. does that sticker mean I can only write to DVD+R's?
DVD+R DL (DL stands for Double Layer) also called DVD+R9, is a derivative of the DVD+R format created by the DVD+RW Alliance. Its use was first demonstrated in October 2003. DVD+R DL discs employ two recordable dye layers, each capable of storing nearly the 4.7 GB capacity of a single-layer disc, almost doubling the total disc capacity to 8.55 GB (or 7.96 GiB).
That's what that other one is.

Is there a PDF reader for OSX that lets me "type" into documents? I have some language learning materials here with fill-in-the-blanks stuff and it would be convenient if I somehow could do that on my computer, without printing anything...stuff like that...I'm sure Adobe's reader can do it but that shit is bloated to hell and back.

What is an MiB?

I see people post data sizes in terms like MiB and GiB.

Whatever happened to MB and GB? What's with the random i?
Is that a non-american thing or something?

So whats the deal with emotional crying?

I mean, what's it's purpose, why have we developed this trait into a seemingly meaningless reaction from an originally purposeful defense against irritating eye particles.

Scientists have discovered that the emotional tears contain higher levels of manganese and the hormone prolactin, and this contributes in a reduction of both of these in the body; thus helping to keep depression away

Psychic tears (or emotional tears) require an emotional response, or trigger to be activated. This response can be caused by an outside source, either pain or loss of love, etc., or from an inside source (self-realization of one's life and others). When emotions affect us, the nervous system stimulates the cranial nerve, in the brain and this sends signals to the neurotransmitters to the tear glands. Thus, we cry.

The largest tear gland, the lacrimal gland produces the tears of emotion and reflex. Many believe that the body, in times of emotional stress, depends on this gland to release excess amounts of chemicals and hormones, returning it to a stable state.

Why are militaries divided into distinct branches (usually Army, Air Force, and Navy)? There have been lots of problems throughout history with inter-service rivalries. A few militaries put everything under one umbrella (like the IDF) and they seem to do fine.

The XiBs are the same thing as their XB counterparts as they are used now. They are supposed to replace them because the XB prefixes (mega, giga, etc) are wrong according to standard SI prefixes. i.e. A kilobyte (KB) means 1,024 bytes, but it's not supposed to because kilo means 1,000. So some organization changed the name to kibibyte (KiB) which means 1,024 bytes. I think this is because when you get into the higher numbers, there's a much bigger difference than 24 bytes. But there hasn't been enough of a push to change general usage.

Serious answer. A fucking annoying horn people blow into that is popular in South African football (soccer) matches. Also it is now making it's way to baseball games :(.

so XB is only for X, X0, X00, X000, X0,000 etc?

Meaning that XiB would essentially be the coverall for everything else that isn't a number followed by only zeroes?

The XBs should be used for a thousand, a million, a billion, a trillion, etc.

And the XiBs are also specific numbers:
KiB = 1,024 bytes (2^10)
MiB = 1,048,576 bytes (2^20)
GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (2^30)

But they're interchangeable for everyday usage because no one uses XiBs.

Good explanation here.

I just saw Lost season 6 episode 9. i think it was the best episode so far.

will it even be better in the following episodes?!
Episode 609 is one of my favourite episode of LOST. That being said, there are a few more fantastic episodes to come. On the top of my head: episode 611, 614 and the finale.

So, to answer your question: YES :D (but it's all subjective of course)

MOVIE GAF.

A while ago I saw someone posted the cover of a movie (may have been on gaming side) about a crazy chef that was in some kind of competition maybe? It looked epic. It was either Chinese or Japanese.

Anyone know what i'm talking about?

Depending on the thread and your own level of experience/comfort with GAF you can also optionally read it in your head as "Link to the Past" for a similar and sometimes cooler effect.

Haha, thats what I used to think it meant.

It's 5:18 AM, why won't the two birds chirping in rhythm with each other shut the fuck up?
There are two solutions to this problem. One, get a master hunter cat. Two, go to bed before 3 AM, as birds (in my area) begin chirping around 3 AM.

Not sure, but that has Leslie Cheung in it so I'll be sure to watch it!

Also, it led me to The God of Cookery: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_of_Cookery

I think THAT's it! Thanks a bunch!

Unfortunately Netflix doesn't have God of Cookery that I can tell. They did have The Chinese Feast though.

I don't believe there's been a NA release of God of Cookery, but you can find a region free release at most any asian movie store in the US, or order online. Great movie.

How do I create positive pressure in my room to keep the cigarette smoke going out the window without it being pushed to the rest of my house?

EDIT: or do I mean negative pressure?

When you go food shopping and something is on sale 2 for $5 for example, is 1 going to cost $2.50 or is the sale price only on 2? This is never specified on the ad or in-store.

It probably depends, but whenever I see that here, you can buy 1 for the sale price.

Assuming you have central heating/aircon, block up the door with towels or a jumper?

I can see a little green light on my reading glasses a lot of the time. It's not really distracting, just kind of weird. It appears toward the top right of the lens, but only in my peripherals. If I look at it, it disappears. Also, the light only appears when the light is passing through the glasses at a particular (but wide) range of angles. It is always green.

Is this light some sort of magnification of my blind spot? And why green?

Okay so the DJ at my schools prom has a website where you can request songs. However it won't let me vote for any more songs, they have a limit. Is there a way to get around this? Proxy? Anything?

If you look closely at the signage and/or fine print, they nearly always specify what the individual price will be. Most of the time, the cost of a single item will be covered under the reduced sale price but the 2/$x is obviously prioritized so people will buy more.

When I was a checkout chap (for seven interminable years), it meant you could get 1 for the sale price.

In fact, I would have looked at you with weary scorn if you'd asked.

I have another paper due today and I need a good title! This time, it's on the original Manchurian Candidate film.

Whoever comes up with a good title gets like, $1 million!

How "easy" is chili con carne?

Looking to cook something nice for my girlfriend tomorrow night.

Very, very easy check for a recipe online, basically minced beef, tinned chopped tomatoes, chili powder, peppers, onions and serve with rice. You can make it earlier and leave it on a low heat as i find it matures. I lurve it.

Hey GAF, how do I stop making bad/crappy jokes such as:
Yesterday I was talking to a chemist about Acyclovir while having some ice-cream. That sure was some topical cream!
or

Maybe you should record yourself so you can listen to the things that come from your mouth.
