If your TV accepts 1080p from HDMI, you should get some 'free-AA' from downscaling.

How come I haven't seen or heard of this before?

Isn't the logic that if the game displays in 720p on a 1080p display, that either the display or the console will up-sample it to 1080p making aliasing worse?

He isn't using 720p on a 1080p TV, he is using 1080p on a 720p TV. But yes, if he were doing what you said, it'd be upscaling.

How can he even display a 1080p signal on a 720p television? Isn't that something near impossible?

The logic then would be that the console would allow the display resolution to show in the maximum of the TV's supported resolution, no more. Any attempts to display any higher resolution than the maximum should result in no signal.

Some TVs support 1080p input but do not support 1080p output, so they downscale to whatever resolution the TV is, this has an affect visually on the image of course, an affect some call 'free-AA'.

If you have an LCD you probably don't have a 720p television but, instead, a 768p television. If you TV accepts 1080p (or 1080i from a receiver) it's better to feed it that than 720p so it downscales instead upscales which will look a little better - albeit almost inconceivably so.

Hmm Good point, that is if his television supports that option to input 1080 but output less. It would add a free-AA if the game that is being displayed is running at 1080p in that specific scenario.

But for the 99% of games not rendering at 1080p (even is the console screen setting is set to 1080p)... then it's best to run at 720p, as 99% of console games render at or sometimes even less than 720p.

But if the game not rendering at 1080p (even is the console screen setting is set to 1080p), which is probably the case as 99% of console games don't run 1080p... then it's best to run at 720p , as 99% of console games run in that native resolution.
Indeed. Although I would dispute the 99% bit.

I'm pretty confident in statement of "99%" being within a margin of error of 1%.

this of course means that with those odds, he's better off running the console at 720p to avoid excessive image processing, increasing the margin of input lag and possibly even image quality loss/artifacting.

Really? There are lots smaller than 720, there are some around there but strange numbers, and there are quite a fair few at 1080, if you think of PSN games. I can't be bothered to figure it out, because it'd take a very long time, but I would say it's probably closer to 90% personally.

I have a 1080p but I can't tell the difference when I play my 360 games with the system set at 1080p or when I change it to 720p. If I had a huge TV would I notice the diff or is it the kind of thing that normal people don't notice?

The visual difference between 720p and 1080p begins to be visible at recommended viewing distance when the display is 69 inches or more. If the display is smaller, then you have to sit closer then the recommended viewing distance to notice the difference.

Regarding 1080p games. You have to remember that the consoles have hundreds if not over a thousand games each. Out of those I'd wager that only around 40 per console are 1080p native, that is well under 1% of total games on said console.

Oh yeah, even less than that. I don't own and haven't played a single 1080p disc game on PS3 or 360, the only notable game that comes to mind that is 1080p is the MLB: The Show series on PS3. There are a few PSN games, though, but I only have a 32 inch television so it isn't that noticeable.

Metacritic lists 572 PS3 games, and I didn't say 10% at 1080p, I said 10% not 720p. Every CoD, MGS4, all those sub-HD games, there are tons of them. I am quite sure there are at least 58 non-720p games.

I'm talking about 1080p, why would I be talking about non 720p as in Sub-HD quality?

This is about whether or not 1080p output on a console it worth it, and I said it's not because 99% of the games don't even support native 1080p.

I've been in the mood to replay Killer7, and I thought I'd give Killer8 a try. Does anyone have any tips before attempting this mode, or is there a good walkthrough out there?

I got the Magic Mouse to recognize under Windows XP SP3.... I have the left and right click function, but I can't get the touch scroll to work. I've tried the method described here and here. But so far no go. I saw that you need to move it off the bluetooth device in order for it to use the mouse driver. But how can I do it?

Please help! I'm really lost in terms of how to solve it.

I'm using it for the HP Mini netbook. Windows is updated to Service Pack 3

What that tool that lets you see who has posted in a thread, and the number of times they posted?

Thanks.

Query: Going to see Despicable Me this week, and one random question that occurred to me: when did the whole "super villains stealing the worlds monuments" thing start? The earliest I remember was Carmen Sandiego

You said "it's best to run at 720p , as 99% of console games run in that native resolution."
I said I'd dispute that statement, that is all. Why you would say it really isn't something I could intelligently comment on, I only know that you did.

Ah I see what you mean, you just misunderstood my exact quote. I guess I should have been a bit more specific is all, my mistake.
Edit: Technically I said

Either way, what I'm trying to point out is... what are the chances that in 2010 someone would have an HDTV that supports 1080p input but not output, and that he/she is going to play a game that runs in native 1080p? Chances of those two things lining up must be pretty astronomical.

What is it about old unwashed underwear that makes them so uncomfortable to wear?

Clean pair of underpants? Snug fit, comfortable positioning, all swell downstairs. Day or two old? Uncomfortable, itchy, and riding up.

Whats the go?

Why does my PC speakers make this annoying "buzz buzzz buzzzzzz" static sound when I move my mouse. It's only noticable if no other noise is coming from the speakers but its still annyoing.

My speakers are some cheapo-creatives and my mouse is a Razer Diamonback Plasma

Interference. You'll get the same thing if you put your cell phone next to the speakers and it receives a call or text.

Turn down the volume on the speakers and turn up the volume on your computer.

actually i'd do it the other way round. i think the wireless mouse is causing interference with your soundcard. so turning down the volume on the soundcard and turning up the volume on the speakers/amp might help. also try changing the usb port of the wireless reciever

Yeah I have been doing this since I got the speakers (like 6 years ago) but I hoped there would have been a solution to get rid of it all together :lol

Also, I think that the noise was there back when I still had a ballmouse o_0

just came back from Vegas and was hereing about a place called "Sensations". was whereing it was a massage parler and then some where saying it was a whore house.....

Whats up with Tinypic? They aren't accepting new registrations and why are they sending people to Photobucket?

They might be shutting it down, by the looks of it. Tinypic is already owned by Photobucket, so it is kind of redundant.

PS3 Newb question: Is there away to make the PS3 Browser suck less, like an optimisation guide? It's been really clunky and cumbersome. My friggen Wii works better, apart from being in 480p blur-o-vision. :(

I turn off the java script, I don't know if it makes it room smoother but it seems less likely to crash.
That's about it, though, it's not very wieldy.

What is Layaway, and why do people use it? From what I understand, the store will hold on to items until you've paid them off. But why is this useful?

Can I install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 (Express) and remove all previous (2005, 2008) entries from my add/remove programs list, or do some things still require those previous versions?

How do you create a link to a youtube video at a certain time mark? I've tried adding the "6m35s" type connotation to a link, but cant get it to work.
