Is it common for apartment landlords to demand a full month's payment for a security deposit? It's always been half a month's rent for me before, but I'm doing some real last minute apartment hunting and every fucking place, from every fucking property management company requires a full month, and I just don't have that kind of cash on me. ffuuu-etc
Hah

I'm trying to find an apartment in New York. Most places are asking for First Month + Last Month + an additional month worth for Security. I would love to find a descent place that was one month security. Down in Florida my buddy just moved into an apartment and only had to put $500 down for Security.

My dad says that my dvd surround system is lagging behind the tv picture whenever it's connected to a tv broadcast. As far as I know, neither machine is broken in any way, and I suspect it's just in his head for I have never seen it with my own eyes. Could it be some setting or problem with overly long cables or something? Watching DVD's work as intended, and I've never noticed anything when I connect the surround to my gaming consoles, so it only affects TV signals apparently. Watching DVD's and TV are both done through the old SCART system. it all sounds like total bullshit to me :S

I know when I was a Cox subscriber I had HD channels sometimes do that to me. I was never sure if it was my setup... then I moved and now have a different provider, same setup, problem hasn't shown up since.

Just started using iTunes because I got an iPad.
How do I get iTunes to rescan my music library for new content? I don't use iTunes to rip CDs, I use EAC and MP3Tag instead.
Do i have to add each album folder individually every time I rip a CD or does iTunes scan the library for changes like WMP and Winamp?

In the movie "Gladiator," was Maximus actually a Spaniard? I'd always assumed that was just an alternate identity he'd adopted as he planned his revenge, so no one would know he was a former Roman general. Sort of a way of saying, "I'm not from around here." Yet, in Ebert's review he says, "The hero, a general from Spain named Maximus..." and I've heard other reviewers refer to Maximus being Spanish as well. But when he rode home from Germania to find his wife and son, I don't imagine he rode his horse all the way back to Spain. What say GAF?

PS3-GAF, you're my only hope.

I need some help and I can't find a few answers through google regarding this.
So tomorrow I'll be selling my old 80gig PS3 towards a PS3 slim. It still works but it runs a bit iffy these days and gamestop had a deal where I'll get a lot of credit for it.
Anyways, I have two important questions:

First of all, is there any way to transfer or redownload the videos I've bought from PSN to the new PS3? It seems like you can't redownload them even on the system you've bought it on but there is the option to activate/deactive the video library. Thankfully I don't have that many videos but it would still suck to lose what I have.

Also, copy protected saves. There are only a few I need to save, mainly the Demon's Souls file I've put almost 100 hours into. I don't have a back up HDD to put it on, can I use an ethernet cord to transfer individual files like the DS save?

I'm just hopin to save as much content as I can in the process of switching systems.

You need to do the data transfer to preserve your locked saves. That means you would need both systems at the same time.

K. I'll have to hope that they'll let me do it in store, they offered to do a 360 HDD transfer when they were trying to get me to buy the new Xbox.
I'm fine with losing everything but the Demons'ss Souls saves and my Tim and Eric episodes. Redownloading all my PSN games and all of the patches for my games is gonna take forever but it'll be nice to have a new system.

The video DRM is a bitch though. I wish it was like the 360 and I could just transfer my digital license and keep everything I own.

I've never experienced it but an option on my receiver is to dealy the sound to synch up with the TV or receiver...or somthing.

Since I never had the problem I never had to test it. It was under surround settings.

From what I've read, it takes a very long time to do the data transfer. If you want to try to do it in store, delete as much stuff off the original as possible.

He is supposed to have Spaniard blood. They call him Spaniard because of his looks, not because of where he lives.

Alright, thanks. That was my only concern. As long as I can save my Demon's Souls characters, I will be happy. LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted 2, Rock Band and MGS4 are all copyable to a USB stick.
There are several gigs worth of videos so I'll probably have to accept that they're gone forever unless I can get customer support to let me download them again.

Now I'll be able to control my PS3 with my remote control since I have a Bravia. Hooray.

iTunes has split 1 album into two on me for some reason. It shows up as 1 album in WMP, but in iTunes it shows as 2. What is this crap?

In New York at the moment on vacation, staying in Brooklyn.

Just bought a Jay z rocawear t shirt, has a map of Brooklyn on the front.

On the back it says "the fullest"

Gaf, what does "the fullest" mean? Tell me what I shall be wearing on my back so I can explain to the folks back home.

In Reno 911 Dangle and Junior have to protect a witness named Mario, but when they walk in the room there is a puppy laying on the bed and they believe the puppy is the witness. What kind of dog is it? I want one!

Our very first HD box arrived in the mail today actually, so for us, it's been with SD signals all along. We did change the provider about 2 years back though. It could very well have been back then that this issue arose. I think I'll tell my dad to call their support about this. He's sort of a regular customer at their support :lol

Huh, that sounds like it's worthy of investigating :D Thanks. Should be something about it in the manual I guess.

Can someone give me some tips on hard boiled eggs?

I hate hate getting and picking the shells off and sometimes I get a weird black lining

Tips for boiling eggs?

Also, if I chop up a bunch of eggs (like at the grocery store salad bar) how long would those keep in the fridge? Could I boil like 10 on Sunday and uses them on salads throughout the week at work?

submerge the eggs in cold water in the pot, then put it on the burner, bring water to a boil (doesn't have to be a hard rolling boil) then reduce heat to LOW and cover for 12 to 15 minutes depending on size of eggs.

Run cold water over them to cool after cooking, then gently crack the shells all around and roll the egg between your hands (with a paper towel if you'd like). Shells should come off cleanly.

Don't know how long they keep, but it'd probably keep longer if you kept them in the shell maybe in the fridge, then chopped them as needed on the day you eat them. Never tried to keep them though.

There is an ensemble Asian-American dark comedy from the mid 2000's. Does anyone remember what it was called?

You sure it was a comedy? Better Luck Tomorrow is the last ensemble I remember.

Well, I told my dad your tips, and said that I think it's just in his head :lol So he wanted to prove that he's not crazy and what do you know? My surround sound system works perfectly fine :D The only time audio seems out of whack is when you have the tv on at the same time as my big speakers next to it. But I think that is to be totally expected, right? It's like when two tvs are on the same channel, on different floors, and you stand in between them. Physics 101? :)

I was watching an orchestra perform on YouTube (Video Games Live) and wondered:

What is the conductor actually contributing? Why does he get to bow at the end as if taking the credit? Aren't all the musicians looking at their sheet music doing all the work? I'm pretty sure they can keep themselves in time with each other without the conductor needing to wave his arms around stupidly. If the music is supposed to get louder at a certain point, wasn't that already rehearsed in advance? Why does the conductor need to raise his arms up as if instructing them on what they already know? It all seems really pointless.

I believe we went over this many many pages ago...

When you're in a large group with acoustics all over the place, it's hard to hear the other instruments even in your own section. The conductor holds the tempo, gives entrance cues, and controls the volume.

I'd love to hear a real conductor answer your question, not because I give a shit about them, but because they're generally huge assholes.

Got it working, but God i hate iTunes. Piece of shit.

A conductor is absolutely necessary to keep a large group of musicians unified.

If the music is supposed to get louder at a certain point, wasn't that already rehearsed in advance?
Could be, but the conductor can change things in real time based on how the orchestra sounds in the moment--they can speed up or slow down the tempo if necessary, they can alter exactly where the sound gets louder to fill up the room, or quieter to get the audience to lean forward in their seats.

Let's go with... oh, 120.

Are you going to be able to remember that exact beat on performance night? How about the person sitting next to you?

Now how about the other 50+ people you're playing with?
In my experience, most people tend to play a little faster because they're nervous. However, if they've really practiced and nerves aren't a factor, yes, it's totally possible.

People tend to recall tempos fairly accurately. I remember hearing a report (I think on Radiolab) about how CPR classes started using "Staying Alive" as a reference point for training because it was around 100 bpm (the ideal for CPR, apparently) and almost everyone who knew the song was able to accurately recall the beat.

Edit: just realized you might be talking about classical music. That's a whole different beast... I don't know.

Weed helps me sleep like nothing else. It calms the nerves.

So what happened on 03-01-2008 at 09:57 PM? The most visited GAF moment.

Oh wow. I'm surprised it was a thread in OT. I read that thread, fucking hilarous, but isn't the name of the site banned now?

Get a doctor to prescribe you some Xanax. Works like a charm.

I think we're still allowed to say tranny (don't quote me on that).

However, the whole taking a screenshot and having a TrannySurprise tab in the background is probably now bannable.

Quick question, what is that one website where you can go, insert a picture url and it will give you links to where the picture came from?

Thank you.

Semi-long question but try to hear me out here please.

Before anyone flames me for this, I JUST HEARD THIS THE OTHER NIGHT. NOW I'M JUST CURIOUS. SERIOUS ANSWERS PLEASE.

So the other night, I found out from my parents that when I was born, I had a huge burn mark on my all over my bottom and the doctor basically lied to my parents and said it was a skin disease and I'm going to be mentally retarded (for some reason) and told them it was no big deal.

Afterwards, my family had a PI investigate the whole thing, and they found out I was actually a normal healthy baby who had been carelessly left next to a hot sponge that burnt a ton of my bottom skin by a careless nurse in the hospital shortly right after I was conceived from my mother. Short story, my parents sued the hospital for the whole thing, and we won the case.

Now, apparently, the funds won have been deposited into a bank account that I will be able to obtain when I turn 18 (I'm pretty much just about to turn 18). My parents had said they are honestly not sure how much I won from the case, nor do they know if 18 years of interest will be added to the amount of money won. They have the papers on this whole thing but like I said, I only found out about this earlier, and I don't want to really dig into this with them right now and i'm just a little curious.

So basically, no one in our family really knows how much I inherit when i'm 18, so my stupid question(s) to everyone is:

What kind of court case would this whole thing go under, how much would said court case usually reap for the person who wins the case, how much could I have possibly won from this case, and would there be 18+ years of interest added to my inherited funds?

Can someone clarify these things for me please? LawGAF would be a plus. :lol

(Note: Remember, this is all collected info from what i've heard. Please don't harm me from this cause I feel like I can get barraged with like a million questions for this for some reason and I don't really know everything behind the whole situation. :lol )

Galactic Quail said:
If the money was deposited back when your parents won the case, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't have accumulated interest on your money.

You could have possibly won from hundreds of thousands to millions. Human safety in hospitals are a pretty big deal. Especially since you were a newborn. It also depends on how aggressive your parents/their lawyer was.
