This Vita bundle is insane... (Vita, mem card, AssCreed $179.99 WOW)

I liked the screen, but holy shit that black smudging is nasty. It was so bad on the left hand side of the screen that it impacted any image that was a solid white or grey (like the screen you're greeted with when you first turn on the device). I could see discoloration in the same spot that the black smudges appear.

I've never noticed the dark patches affecting anything other than a black screen. Never noticed anything on a white or grey background before. Not seen anyone else mention seeing them at any other time either. Might want to see if Amazon will swap one out for you. Should be able to do so without losing any play time.

I am quite disappointed by the ergonomics of the machine:

  • I hate rear touch.
  • The face-buttons are tiny and hard to press.
  • The sticks are so far down on the unit that my hands cramp while using them.
  • The shoulder buttons feel like crap.
  • The sticks are so close to the buttons/dpad that I wind up pushing the sticks accidentally a lot.
  • It feels heavier then my PSP and is less comfortable to hold for long periods of time.
  • The d-pad is tiny and I don't like it as much as the psp one.

About the only thing I think is better ergonomically compared to the PSP is that it has two functional sticks.

Maybe I'll get used to all of this by playing more.

Rear touch - When used badly it is indeed god awful just like many new control methods. When used well though it is great. I like uses in Uncharted (zooming for sniper and camera), Browser (scrolling) and Escape plan.

As for the controls, I think many people had similar issues at launch but it's just getting used to it same as any controller. The d-Pad however is I think considered one of the best on any controller in gaming history by those who know about these things (I am not one of these people, though I do like it)

As for the weight, the WiFi Vita is lighter than the 1000 and the 3G is the same as the 1000. The 2000/3000 were about 2oz/90g lighter if the figures from Wiki are accurate.

I'm surprised that nobody has released little clip on attachments for the sticks to make them taller. That would make them feel like they had more throw and would probably feel a little more accurate.

Yeah, after holding my other handhelds it's not that heavy. I think it's the awkward, claw-like grip you need to use to hold the system and use both analog sticks and the shoulder buttons.

One of the grips might be an idea if you are having problems in that regard. Several guys in the main Vita thread have one.

Just got a Vita from the black Friday sale. Do I really need a screen protector?
Is PSN+ worth it?

1) entirely up to you, I put a Hori one on.

2) If you like games then yes. That's forgetting the convenience of auto patching, auto updating, auto syncing, cloud saves etc.

Alright I have a question regarding psone classics. If I've already purchased some PS1 games on the PS3 will I be able to go to the vita store and download them or will I have to double dip?

You should be able to find them in your download history in the Vita store.

So i think something is up with my vita screen. Every time the screen is black, like on startup, i see these blobs of a darker shade of black all over the place. Kinda looks like something was spilled on it. I will assume this is not normal and should contact amazon support about this?

That is normal for OLED screens.

Shouldn't be visible at any other times.

EDIt: I wonder if Sony will release a CLED screen in a revision one day. It's still early stages for development though.

You can go to your downloads list on your vita and just download if the game is compatible.

EDIT: lol i answered that way late.

Oh Ok thanks. I was worried that this would lead to something later on. Does this have a name just so i can look it up?

It's something to do with the manufacturing process apparently. Just search for OLED blotches or OLED dark spots.

This is the best device ive ever owned. Also, this screen...just so damn pretty. <3

I want killzone and ffxhd naoooo.

[*]The face-buttons are tiny and hard to press.

Huh. I find the buttons on this thing are fantastic. Very 'clicky' and definitive. I don't own a 3DS, but I've held one a couple times, and those buttons are sloppy and cheap. The whole thing feels cheap really. The Vita hardware blows it away.

I would agree that it's uncomfortable to hold for long periods though. Same as it was with PSP. Any handheld I would imagine.

im glad many people are recognizing vita built quality.
made a post about it way back when it was launched and i got to play it.
great buttons (a bit too small), very light but sturdy plastic.
i hope sony drop the oled for the next revision and go with super-ips-lcd for better colors accuracy. it should be cheaper for sony too, or maybe sharp's new izgo tech lcd would be good too! apple is going to use them!
im sorry, was a fan of oled but it seems samsung supplied oled still have bad color accuracy.

That is how I feel. Will be ordering some grips as I think they can solve that issue. It will had bulk to the system sure but be worth it if it helps confort. Just need to wait for payday.

The feedback on the buttons is so amazing, much better than any handheld before it.

Be very careful not to have it on the highest brightness or having anything on the screen with boarders ie ps1 4:3 ratios. You want oleds pixels to have even use or you'll get image burn in. I think the reason why the Vitas screen brightness is not as bright as phones with oleds because it extends the life of the screen. If you half the brightness you theoretically extend the life by two.

ps Don't use that browser until Sony comes up with an option to fade/slide the menu. You will surely get burn in. Sending mine to Sony now.

My first one is still "lost" in the mail, had to call and raise hell for them to ship me a replacement, should get it today. HOPEFULLY.

You can get a lot o cheap protectors on Amazon that do the job and fairly well. I got like a dozen for 3 bucks and half of them were specifically made to fit the front and back of the Vita.

1. Get Hori.
2. Yes. Remember though, the biggest downside of PSN+ is that you may end up stop buying games and your backlog can get massive.

Doesn't the Hori protector cover the entire front of the device, though? That would be annoying to me...and excessive. I only want to protect the screen area itself from the wear my weekly cleaning of finger smudges will inevitably incur.

It's actually a lot more useful on the black model where you absolutely will notice fingerprints.

I don't understand how a protector that covers the entire front of the device and is a perfect fit and nigh on unnoticeable would be MORE annoying than a protector that only covers the screen which would mean you'd have a visible edge all the way around the screen.

I have the full face Hori and it's bloody fantastic. I even bought a spare so I have one ready to go should I need it.

I got my refund from Amazon. In case anyone was wondering, they didn't deduct any credit back to me for PSAS or the 3 months of PSN+.

I find this amusing in light of how aggressively you were championing the Vita's amazing software library last week. But damn, you made out like a bandit: free PSAS, PS+, and 5 16GB memory cards. You got paid like $100+ for your trouble.

These went away after a couple of months for me. I recall other people saying the same thing, but I can't confirm that. All I know is they no longer occur on my screen.

Couple of quick thoughts after an evening with the Vita.

OS is garbage. Icons are ugly, the gestures are not intuitive, and so much stuff seems hidden or convoluted to do. Transferring PSP games form the PS3, and saved games, is done so strangely. Why did they get rid of the XMB? That seemed perfect for touch. I still feel like I don't understand when an app is open or closed and what triggers an app closing or not.

The device is heavier than I anticipated, and the screen, both in colors and resolution, seem to be a bit lacking (but that may just be P3P and Playstation All Stars, the two games I'm playing the most).

AC: Liberation is ugly to look at, with a smear over everything, and a framerate that makes me feel like I'm playing in slow motion. I've only played 10 minutes of it, but I don't know if I'll return to it.

Battery life is poor, and I wish there was a way to display the percentage of battery life left.

I really want a 32GB card, but I can't justify the ridiculous markup.

Device is beautiful to look at, though it is a bit big and thick.

Persona 2 is too expensive:(

P4G should come next week. Can't wait.

I had the same really poor first impression of Liberation but persevered, I'm now in a bayou section and just carried out some very nicely laid out missions (with a much steadier framerate..) and have done a total 180 on it. Keep going, it's worth it.

Yeah, I've heard this. Apparently it's sublime once you "figure it out". I dunno, though. Maybe the sequel will address the control issues and lack of mission variety.

It feels fine when it behaves like you expect but it doesn't always do and it just penalizes you so much for when it doesn't.

Sounds awful. Is this a result of the game's implementation of the Vita's unique control features? Can be addressed by using standard controls instead?

I use regular controls for it but it's more the overall feel. The camera shifts when flying and at times you mess up because of the camera shifting as you're trying to do something else and you get disoriented. Also some areas that look wide enough you get caught on corners and ledges and can be frustrating to get out of. It's not terrible at all but at times it can be annoying. It's not always super punishing when you mess up but some areas are more than others. Maybe with more practice it gets better, they just feel clunky to me still but still better than when I started. The game is still fun to play regardless.

I'm highly tempted for the Persona 4 Skin that came from the Persona 4 game, it seems like a nice protector from the outside of the screen and it is kind of decorative for the system, is it worth?

If you can find it cheap somewhere... but judging by the prices for the solid gold edition I doubt that's possible.

This is the first time I've experienced non-buyers remorse as opposed to buyers remorse.

I totally wish I would've bought this. Pretty much solely to play Persona 4.

Something will probably pop up again closer to Christmas. Maybe Persona 4 will go on sale, too.

Found a Hori screen protector at Gamestop, highly recommended. Also picked up an 8GB memory card. Now, if only my copy of Persona 4 would get here.
