thoughts on poster I'm making for graphic design

...Well I have no idea what's going on. It looks like a really radical ad for spaghetti-O's. Oh, and that little "fact" at the bottom is wrong, too. It was once estimated that no more than 10% of the brain is in use at any given time (it has since been disproved). You use all of your brain, just not at the same time.

It's ~10% of the brain active at any one time (with synaptic firing)

The entire brain is used on a relatively regular basis.

Think about it... if you had every portion of your brain active all the time, you'd be closer to a schizophrenic in a seizure than a genius.

the edges of the smoke are too sharp - the bit where it takes a sort of 'sharp turn' it should be smooth and flowing. and the photos aren't working.. you probalby need some alternative photos :p either that, or just use one hand - i dont think you need the hand at the left, the single one might work to draw your eye in a curve around the right hand side of the page... maybe this pic will help with the zelda smoke thing?

These are just my suggestions:

- Get a higher resolution hand/cigarette picture

- The word "think" doesn't stand out enough; too similar grey to background

- The whole composition is too saturated

- Needs some chroma as well as visual space relief

heres a non graphic design perspective!

im having a hard time making sense of the figure ground. the smoke doesnt read as smoke and the hands dont feel connected to the cigarettes even though they are actually connected.

the whole thing just doesnt make logical sense!

the ciggs need to be between the fingers closer to the base (where the fingers meet the hand) and if the fingers were "shaded" or whatever so they looked like the rest of the poster it would look a lot better.

I work for a design studio (I'm a 3d artist - not one of the designers) but I've picked up what's fresh to a certain extent.

I think it's a good start, though your elements are blending into each other. There should be a sense of depth here, so the eye knows where to focus first. Id reccomend adding some sort of light source or gradient overlay to your orange back layer to push it back a bit. Maybe some sort of white stroke around the fingers, and if you can, raise them out and up a bit (I don't want to say soft dropshadow - but that's the type of effect you'll end up with if you work at it.

Text work isn't bad - but I'm left a little confused as to what I'm supposed to be pulling away from your poster. I know it's anti smoking, but it's not a slap in the face.

Ditch those low rez cigs - they are pulling the whole piece down. Trying a finding higher rez source footage, or stylize them out in illustrator or something.

Looking forward to seeing the final

Here is an easy way to fix the harsh edges on the hands.

Take them into photoshop, on a transparent layer.

Select the hands by ctrl-clicking on the layer, use the select-shrink function and shrink it by 1-3 pixels, then select the select-feather command, and feather it by 1-2 pixels. Goto select, inverse and hit delete. Place back into illustrator or whatever.

So everyone's talking about the hands and cigs.......

My question is:

Why are there fucking hands with cigs???

BTW, the hands and cigs are way too pixelated, etc..

Chili Con Carnage!
I'd take the picture of the hand & spliff out and make a drawing of it to go in its place (you can probably get the same effect with some photoshop filter).

The wording at the bottom doesnt make much sense, get a new fact.

I suggest something like (you'd have to check the facts)...

"Think your looking at this poster for the first time?
Smoking pot has been known to cause short term memory problems.
Write it down so you dont forget."

How about make the fingers black and white and in the same art/line quality as the background? ... hrm.. upon looking at it again, I thought the swirls in the BG were A da lighter orange... so the black and white fingers would definitely be off.

Let me think about this one ^_^

Dang, I know how to use photoshop to a certain degree but, I've never found out to do those types of curves and "cartoon"-looking-cel-shading graphics. The closest thing I've ever found to be "cartoony" is using the "Cut-out" option in photoshop's filters.

I've seen some of you here at GAF, I think olimario, turn had drawn stuff into photoshop cartoon stuff. How the heck do you do that?

I need input on this. It's going in my portfolio and I'm far from done but I need some input now.

I'm going to put some swirls in there, make it look really swanky. Right in the middle I'm going to put a vertor drawn brain. In the background where you see the orange, there's going to be comic strip like panels showing more things that danger society such as alcohol, guns, and what have you. I just hope it doesn't get too busy, but that's the point. Also, i need to know what's the actual percentage of the brain humans use, I just put in a random number because I forgot.

I need to photo manip. those hands and cigs better to make them look more genuine. Probably erase the part where the cig is burning..yeah. Either or touch that up...Ah, this is a fun project. Photos with 2d is pretty fun.
Those look more like blunts than cigs. Might wanna fix that.

An European viewpoint to the topic:

In Europe graphic design is very much seen as a functional communications vehicle which targets some specific outcomes.

For example

1. Getting people realize that smoking weed makes them less capable
2. Educate people in greater detail about the effects of weed

As an example of this thinking, I took your "10% of the brain" concept and developed a communications concept that would target these two goals.

I'm not sure if this is relevant to your project - or if the scope is more illustration than communication. My 0.5 cents anyway!

Good job, man. Looks like a professional campaign, to me.

That whole 10% thing is BS.

Claim: We use only ten percent of our brains.

Status: False.

Origins: Someone
has taken most of your brain away and you probably didn't even know it. Well, not taken your brain away, exactly, but decided that you don't use it. It's the old myth heard time and again about how people use only ten percent of their brains. While for the people who repeat that myth, it's probably true, the rest of us happily use all of our brains.

The Myth and the Media

That tired Ten-Percent claim pops up all the time. In 1998, national magazine ads for U.S. Satellite Broadcasting showed a drawing of a brain. Under it was the caption, "You only use 11 percent of its potential." Well, they're a little closer than the ten-percent figure, but still off by about 89 percent. In July 1998, ABC television ran promotional spots for The Secret Lives of Men, one of their offerings for the fall season's lineup. The spot featured a full-screen blurb that read, "Men only use ten percent of their brains." ....

It's probably not done in Photoshop then. To get that kind of "cartoon" look, youd want to use something like Illustrator, or another vector-based program. Or at the very least, the pen tool in Photoshop. It's a completely different type of program, and requires different skills and techniques, but thats the best way to go about it.
