Breaking now.

CNN said:
(CNN)Tilikum, the killer whale involved in the deaths of three people, including SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010, has died, Sea World reported Friday.

Tilikum was at the center of the 2013 CNN documentary "Blackfish."

Sea World reported in March that the orca -- estimated then to be 35 -- may be dying.

It's sad that he spent all his life trapped in a swimming pool and was forced to perform tricks, it's little wonder that he lashed out and attacked his trainer.

Worse part is that releasing the other trapped whale at Seaworld isn't possible either as they lack the skill set to survive in the wild.

For the record Tilikum was 36 when he died, Granny the oldest known Orca whale died at the age of 105.

The only different between the two was that Tilikum was kept in captivity almost all his life whereas Granny was a free roaming whale.

So basically Whales are supposed to have near human lifespans, but the ones in captivity have the lifespan of around 30 years.

Why now? Also, it's continuing its shows elsewhere, that is just for California since their government are forcing them to effectively by banning breeding of Orcas. And they're still going to be in captivity just as before, they're not freeing them, just putting them into enclosed tanks for petting/feeding by the general public. The cycle continues. It makes for great PR for them though since people don't read the whole article and just go "oh great, their ending the shows".

From what I recall females are supposed to live substantially longer. I think males are supposed to be 30-50, females like 70-100.

Orca entertainment shows are scheduled to end at SeaWorld's parks in Florida and Texas sometime in 2019.

But yes, they still will be held in captivity. This is at least a good step for the safety of the trainers.

Farewell Tily. At least you're no longer in a cramped space, forced to live with orcas of different tribes and entertaining idiot humans.
