Since I live in England the tips thing isn't as big of a shock to me as it may be to Americans. It isn't rude to tip here but it's also definitely not a requirement.

No tips since I haven't been there yet, but I hope to be in your situation in a year.. I'm currently applying to study abroad there for Spring '14!

Chamchi (tuna) kimbap makes for a decent ghetto meal if you're running low on cash. Ja jang myeon is also an inexpensive but delicious noodle dish.

Visit seoul and busan while you're there. The latter gets packed once it starts warming up, it's really a sight to behold if you don't have popular beaches wherever you're from. If you want to network with expats working in Korea, I recommend looking up the local Toastmaster's Club.

I lived there for 4 months study abroad.

Eat fried chicken, they have the best.

Actually I just read you're not going to be in or near Seoul. SK when you're not in Seoul or Busan is a completely different experience and one I don't have much to tell about.

i've heard that the traffic is lawless and scary
a friend of mine said that a moped hit his car after running a red light and he got a ticket because "he was bigger (the car)" anecdotal and all but yeah...

My gf is from Seoul and drove there almost daily, and she got a ticket within five minutes of driving in the US lol. She also somehow drove the rental car across the entire state of Oregon to get to my town, and afterwards was surprised when she found out from me that that the speedometer numbers were MPH, not km/h.... -_- let's just say that I do all of the driving now.

Remember to remove your shoes when you go in someone's house. No-one else seems to have mentioned it, but it's worth stressing.

Learn Hangul. You can do it in a day. No excuses.

Most importantly: make sure you have an open mind about everything.

English games can be found in Yongsan, I believe.

Smaller game stores are found sporadically throughout many cities, but yeah the biggest hub is by far in Sinyongsan. Exit 4 IIRC, do a bit of walking and you'll wind up here:

Pretty much everything you can imagine gaming-wise being sold here. Very few things have prices on them and haggling is an Olympic sport to Korean people, so have fun.

If you're taking electronics with you, Korea uses the mainland Europe plug with the same electric current as the UK/Europe but at 60hz. Make sure you check your stuff is compatible.
