Tips on quitting smoking?

Live a life that doesn't depress you in the first place.

Source: I am living a depressing life right now that I can't stand. Quitting smoking will never work as long as I am in this state of mind.

I'm with the others recommending Allen Carr's "Easy Way to Stop Smoking". I listened to the audio book and have been a non smoker for ~350 days now.

Several of my good friends (and my brother) quit by easing themselves off of nicotine with e-cigarettes. Highly recommended.

Watch one of your best friends die of lung cancer. Really helps you to commit.
Sure let me call up a friend and tell him/her to hurry up and die of lung cancer so i can watch it happen.

Thanks for the help?

Been reading some of it today and luckily my brother in law has a big 4wd truck and my sister sent me a goodie box full of some veggies, gum, water and some other things.

Haven't had a craving in awhile so that's good. Turning in early tonight because the shelf building and dvd/blu-ray organizing took a lot longer than expected.

Stop fucking around and quit. I did it 3 years ago after smoking for 10 or so years. I'm a fucking idiot for not doing it sooner. Yes you will feel like shit for a few weeks, yes it will be hard when out and about but just fucking do it as you WILL regret it later in life if you don't quit now. I used gum for the first few weeks then ditched that.

Remember, as other have mentioned Allen Carr, smokers only smoke to get back to the same state of relaxation nonsmokers enjoy their entire life.

I've been a smoker for 6 years. Get about $100-$150 dollars and invest in a e-cig rig. I haven't craved in a cigarette in weeks.

My new addiction is now buying new vape stuff though :(

lol.

Just wait a while.

Maybe you can be the friend.
I'm sure something else will get me before lung cancer and whatever it is will probably get me in the next 10 years.

Lung cancer is the last of my worries in the long list of health problems that run in my family.

I quit cold turkey going on 10 years ago. I would attribute much of that to smoking while I was sick and absolutely hating it.

Two things worked for me.

1: Set some rules for yourself. Don't smoke inside, or in your car, and don't let guests do it either. Don't go bar hopping, or get yourself put in a situation where you're around a lot of people that smoke. This will help you focus on reducing the the number of cigarettes you smoke in a day. get as close to smoking like 3-5 a day as possible, and then drop the shit altogether.

2: Get acid reflux. Seriously, when this shit started, I had no idea what it was, and it freaked me out. I started getting chokey feelings in my throat all day, like somebody had their hand around my throat. I really thought it was the smoking causing it (after 10 straight years of smoking.). This is what pushed me over the edge.

Also: THINK OF THE FUCKING MONEY YOU'LL SAVE. Cigarettes have pretty much doubled since I quit about 5-6 years ago. No way I would pay that much fucking money for that crap.

Your life will be cleaner, you won't smell of smoke all the time, etc. Quitting really is worth it.

My boyfriend is at about a month since he last smoked. He had been using patches for a few months to help with cravings. Stopped using them a fortnight ago and has been doing really good since, very few cravings. What he did was keep his mind active when he had cravings; bike riding, doing stuff with me, gaming, or even naps. Anything to stop himself. He only relapsed once or twice during that time and would get super moody. It was horrible. This month he has done really good. I'm very proud.

Hope this helps. And whatever you do, do not go to the servo. You will give in. Don't give yourself the opportunity

Chantix has worked wonders for the people I know who have it though both of them experienced the crazy dreams side effect when talking it.

I've been smoking on and off since I was 18, I'm 25 now. I have friends who smoke and other's who don't, and it really comes down to who you hang around with. When I'm around people who don't smoke, I rarely get an urge. And for whatever reason the coffee shop that I go to, has none of the smokers, who were regulars, come by.

If you have strong enough will not to buy the pack, then it'll be easier to just steer clear. Since the new year (it wasn't a resolution) I'd say out of the 30 days, I've smoked probably 6-8 with one weekend consciously knowing I was gonna smoke (It was a road trip). I don't know how strong your will power is (I'm working on mine), allow yourself some cheat days.

Also, think of it as something bigger than just quitting smoking, if you quit then you'll have better lung functionality to work out more, you'll wake up better and refresh, eat better food, soon your body will start to not crave the cigs if you just naturally feel good more often. AND DON'T GIVE INTO STRESS! Well buddy, good luck to you (and me).

Edit: Something that's helped me (I smoked in my car), was to have snacks with me to ease off any craving.

I smoked for 10+ years, and I only tried to quit once. I used an e-cig for two weeks, made sure I didn't touch alcohol for almost two months, tried to keep my mind busy, chewed on straws, and had suckers. Once you quit smoking you realize how truly gross it is. This June will be 5 years since I had a cigarette. It also helps if your friends aren't smokers either. Best of luck to you.

So i bought a week box of nicotine patches instead of a larger supply because i didn't know how well they would work. Well, i am snowed in and my last patch literally peeled off as i took my hoodie off so here i am stuck in a house with no nicotine but a gas station within walking distance.

I don't want to smoke, i can't smoke. I have a lot of problems going on so anyone who has quit and has some suggestions to get my mind off smoking would be greatly appreciated. I figure it's a good a time as any to just cold turkey it but since i am snowed in and probably will be for another 1-2 days i am pretty much stuck either reading, watching movies or playing games and i don't want to play anything stressful. Any techniques when the craving hits? gum? reading? do some push ups?

Did you go through with all of the steps? It sounds like you didn't. The patches won't work unless you go through all three steps.

I did quit smoking by reading "quit smoking now" by Allen Carr. I read it the first time and it did nothing to me. Then, a few months later, I was reading the book again and got to the chapter about the moment you smoke your last cigarette, and I was smoking a cigarette in that moment. I did what the book said (looked at that cylinder thinking what a miserable thing to be hooked to) and when I finished that cigarette I took the pack and flushed it through the toilet.

That was in 2005, and to this day Im cool. I had tried several times before, but this just worked.

Also, you have to get something into your mind. There is no "just one cigarette." If you smoke one while quitting, its over. Youll be back smoking your usual amount in no time.
You decide when to quit, but when you do quit, it's forever.

I quit Monday because I wasn't enjoying it anymore and I want more money. It's a bitch. It's been more difficult than the last two times I quit.

Don't know if worthy of a push, but I'm stopping currently. Last cig was on the 22nd I think, used the week before that to significantly lower my cig amount.
Did smoke at least a pack a day for about 20 years, probably way more at times, now I just use a (0mg nicotine) e-cig for the oral fixation moments, which happen less and less. But really, those things are a godsend for these moments.
So far I didn't scream, get overly crazy or had any other moments I'd regret. Some cravings, but I got it under control so far. Working way better than I thought it would.

I actually do feel really good about it this far, and I'm pretty sure I'll make it just fine. I think having an actual reason helps. My reason is one sentence my gf said: "It's no problem if you smoke, I'll just smoke too when I'm around you - I won't taste it on you then and I can stop anytime after that." She really meant it.

And that's a fucking good reason to stop, guys.

Former two pack a day smoker. Ive been trying to quit for a while but I realized that I never really wanted to. I like smoking, it was an integral part of who I was, but I decided it was time to stop. The world moved on and so should I. I quit Cold turkey and started chewing gum for the first couple of weeks. Stopped doing that and I don't have cravings at all. I will admit that my gf stopping also was a big help because smoking is something we did together. Its not impossible to stop and you will succeed.

Well, whatever you do don't substitute tobacco for drinking coffee because then you'll get addicted to caffeine and will have to deal with splitting headaches for a week

The thing it worked for me was the consequence that will happen if I didn't stopped and that was a certain death.

I have a daughter and my wife and the thought of leave them alone was enough for me to quit.

Sounds silly I know because cigarretes don't kill you quick but whatever that was what worked for me.

I have not smoked anything since November I think.

I've been on e-cigs for two weeks now but I'll never quit coffee. That's an addiction I'm commited to goddamit!

In regards to e-cigs how long did you guys waited before lowering the nicotine dosage? Kinda tempted to it now but I'm afraid overdoing it. I've been on a 11mg/ml 10ml vial that lasted me up to now (2 weeks) and will last me one or two more days.

11mg is still pretty light for e-cigs. You can try stepping down to 6mg.

I was a cigarette smoker for about 10 years. half a pack a day. I never wanted to quit. I had gum, cleaning stinky hands, avoiding my girlfriends bitching down to a science.

I got sick february 2013 with the flu bad and you know how smoking is so gross when you're sick. I used that oppertunity to quit. Didn't smoke for about 3 weeks then got antsy. Bought my first ecig and haven't had a cigarette in a year and a half.

I enjoy smoking too much, and I enjoy the "hobby" that ecigs have turned into. I currently vape 12mg but can step down to 6mg in a dripper. I need that throat hit that doesn't come with 0mg/6mg juices for me.

I understand the risks that still come with ecigs. But I'm convinced that if I wasn't smoking ecigs I'd just go back to smoking traditionals.

Cold turkey also worked for me (but I'm not even going to pretend that means anything since I only smoked for a short period) and for a few of my friends. I had a few other friends who smoke bought e-cigs, thinking it would get them off cigarrettes. But it only made them do both -- so now they're smoking and vaping. Think about the cancers growing in your lungs.

Edit: I guess cancer doesn't scare you. That's what did it for us though.

I'm on day 30, not a single smoke. Cold Turkey is the only way that seems to work for me. I've tried E-cigs, patch, meds and gum.

I smoked for 10 years and quit this same way. Tried E-cigs and they didn't help. Just quit. Haven't smoked in 5 years. Feels good.

Stay away from other smokers as much as possible. Break every ciggerate you are tempted to smoke before thinking about it.

One night while I was drunk at a party like 14 years ago I all of a sudden had this image in my mind of blackened lungs. For some reason I kept obsessing on that image and lost my appetite for them entirely. I created a mantra for myself which was, "I was not born needing nicotine in my body, so why must I be addicted to it like this?" The Michael Mann movie the Insider was correct in breaking it down as only being a "nicotine delivery system". We need food and water. Nicotine is not a necessity for human beings to live, but from constant smoking it starts to feel that way.

Patches didn't work. Gum didn't work. Weening didn't work. It was all about cold turkey. I even kept a pack on me to test how much self control I had. Once you stop smoking for a while the craving will go away. For me nowadays the smell and taste of a cigarette makes me want to gag.

Also, I really hate having friends who smoke. One smokes in the car and it pisses me off to no end. I almost feel like I have to hold my breath. He knows I hate it but doesn't care because the addiction is more important than his consideration for his friend.

I quit nicotine and caffeine at the same time. Though I only quit caffeine for a few days straight, I was able to use it to 'reward' myself instead of using nicotine. I cut it out entirely at work, and severely limited it elsewhere. I haven't smoked since May 5th. It feels good.

Dunno if this will change but I have absolutely no problems with this so far. I even allow people to smoke in my car mostly, and I join friends at work on their smoke breaks. Both really doesn't have much impact on my need/non-need to smoke for myself so far, and I can't say I "hate" it as well.

Honestly, I would feel incredibly bigoted if I would suddenly go all "Bah smokers" when I did smoke for years and with those guys before.

I just quit.

I went to drs and he prescribed Champix tablets. They've worked like a charm. Haven't had any cravings or side effects. They are worth a shot if you can get them where you are.

i recommend ecigs. i quit cold turkey for two years, then came back to smoking towards the end of my school program. when i came back, it was worse than when i started. it was disgusting. so i took up ecigs. it wasnt until i switched to a mechanical mod and dripper that my cravings were fully satisfied.
