Year and a half? Wow, news travels fast, huh? I guess it had some sort of declassification or something.

That is in reference to the unexplained methane plumes on Mars, not related to Titan.

I had a dream about this - a recurring dream actually. If it turns out to be plant life...this is not going to go well for us at all. That whole Zombie thing won't be far from the truth. Don't say I didn't warn you!

Big whoop. It's only logical there's life outside of earth. We're all part of the same universe. Earth isn't special.

Yeah, finding the first sign of life off our own planet really isn't a big deal at all...

Plants... with space ships.

Ars have the same sources as the telegraph, just don't put so much spin on the facts. They're a generally reputable science/tech/games blog, and they pick up on interesting bits of news often not reported elsewhere.

Just read the direct link to the NASA papers.

There are possible explanations for the lack of acetylene at the surface; as scientists do they are going to explore pretty much all non-biological theories first. Especially when there may be unknown minerals on Titan acting as a catalyst for such a chemical reaction that we would not have any experience with.

I would not expect any more news about the topic for a long while unless more fly-bys reveal something that would better explain what's going on with the atmosphere.

Nothing in the article says anything about real evidence, to the best of my understanding.

More like there's a lack of a certain chemical at the surface, and it could be aliens. But it could also be a number of other things.

That's like saying the sun disappears at night...maybe it blows up.

There could be a bunch of explanations, seems they're jumping to conclusions.

Maybe I'm just reading it wrong or something...

There are two separate phenomena going on here that have multiple explanations, but organic life is on the high list for explaining both phenomena.

Certainly not "proof" at all, but very exciting nonetheless especially with Titan being such a promising possibility for life.

Exciting, even if its not any sort of confirmation. We need to get that warp drive up and running.
I'm afraid mankind will just end up fucking the universe up trying to invent something like a warp drive :lol

This news is kinda cool I guess, I hope it's alien life, just for the heck of it, it's more fun than the other explanations

Edit: By fucking up I mean destroying time and space.

Yeah, I think we shouldn't be too excited yet.
Yeah, it's a really poorly written article. You could blame the scientists for blowing hot air, but the article itself is directly contradictory:

"They have discovered that life forms have been breathing in the planet’s atmosphere and also feeding on its surface’s fuel."

"They warned, however, that there could be other explanations for the findings."

My bet is there is life outside Earth in our solar system since it spawned so quickly once the Earth cooled, was able to survive so many extinction events, and the discovery of 10 foot tube creatures among others deep in the ocean beyond the reach of our sun (so no need for a planet to be in the Goldilocks zone).

Human level intelligent life however, sure took it's time to develop on Earth. With so many restarts due to extinction events, yet with none producing intelligent life until now. Evolution seems to prefer size over intelligence until a specific environment was made that gave small creatures with intellect the advantage. So looking at our past, there may not be intelligent life outside us in our galaxy.

I want to see these things, link?

So why don't they just go find out? Doesn't Titan have a satellite or anything?

Any life on titan is unlikely to be more complex than algae, and submerged under deep ethane lakes. Titan's dense atmosphere also makes external observation difficult, so any true explanation would have to wait for new probes, unlikely to arrive until almost 2030 :(

Magic all up in this bitch

Well it is kind of cool we can jump to titan when the sun starts to get ready to explode. Now we just need the tech.

1. It's on fucking saturn.

2. No water on Saturn, this is something completely new.

Awesome I have the date circled on my calender. See you bastards in 4 billions years.

Well, not really. The same time frame that would turn Titan into a garden paradise would also unfortunately annihilate Earth. Tricky things, stars.

It would be sort of funny if we end up finding alien life in our own solar system. :lol All we've been able to find or Mars was the possible evidence of long dead microorganisms.

I should be on my way, or already on Titan by then. I'd be on the hills waiting for my chance at the garden paradise.

That's one hell of a stretch. All they're saying is that a certain substance found in the atmosphere is not found on the surface. There could be any number of reasons why, and one of them COULD be that there's life, but of course the article just goes ahead and goes "SCIENTISTS DISCOVER LIFE ON TITAN" even though it's far from the most likely explanation.

While Earth may not be the only planet with life on it, most evidence we have indicates that planets capable of life are pretty rare.

So what is potentially the first life found outside of Earth is already performing aerobic respiration? Holy shit.
