Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

I'm sure it's been said plenty of times by now but yeah even with the movement tweaks, the game still isn't very good.

The maps are terrible, the Titans are clunky and unfulfilling, the rodeo system is super bland, and the TTK feels lower than the first game.

Edit: The modes don't help either!

This game has really grown on me but I almost only play PvP and do not even bother with the Titan based modes. I think I will be picking it up as the truth is even if it is not perfect or has some smaller issues there is one thing I care about more than anything else, and that is having fun. And I will be damned but I have fun playing this game. Will get the PC version I believe.

- Hardpoint amping a base. Maybe allow for once its amped, a player doesn't need to camp there to keep it amped. I saw too many times A and C were amped by their respective teams. Leaving only 4 players on each team to fight for B.

This belief drives me insane.

PLEASE realize that once a point has been successfully amped it accrues points at an amped rate until the timer drops back down to regular. There is benefit to staying to keep the timer maxes but that is easily outweighed by assisting your team elsewhere and doubling back whenever the timer is close to expiring.

Do NOT nerf the Mastiff, Respawn.

I just finished playing a 12hr session. Hit level 15 and used every single weapon. All of them feel viable and satisfying. No joke. Kudos to Respawn for that.

Seen a few people complaining about constantly getting sniped from across the map. If that's happening to you, you aren't moving around enough.

Assuming what we have right now in the tech test stays, only things I'd like is some more areas on the open maps to help dial momentum up a notch, Quicker in/out animation with your Titan, and for the matchmaking to not put me in so many on going matches. I understand people back out and matches need to get filled, but when it happens 5, 6, 7 times in a row it gets annoying. Not to mention you're usually on the loosing team when that happens. Carried a few on going games to victory. Felt good but when it happens almost every match, your back starts to wear out.

Overall the game is amazeballs. I hope there's atleast 10 maps at launch. Can't wait for 10/28

Game is amazeballs.

Amen!

We're sifting through all the feedback. Tech Test only lasts through this weekend though so I wouldn't expect another gameplay patch for the Tech Test.

Keep playing and posting feedback.

Thanks.

Parting thoughts on the 2nd tech test from somebody who always found using Titans and Titan vs Pilot interplay to be the most fun part of TitanFall:

1) I feel the most obvious design decision would be to just drop every Titan 'fully stocked' so to speak.

Full shields and a stocked electric smoke use. From that point on, if you want more smoke use, you gotta take out enemies, and if your shield gets crushed you need to get batteries. You basically extend your Titan's life-expectancy through performance, but you start without any inherent disadvantage.

2) The battery mechanic has potential ALONG SIDE standard rodeoing, but not as a replacement for it. For example, you can choose to steal the battery which comes with an automatic eject for the rodeoing pilot, and that would immediately take off the Titan's shields until he gets another battery. Or, the pilot could take off the hatch and deal direct damage (ie bypassing shields straight to the fleshy middle) for x seconds with whatever weapon (including grenades), followed by immediate eject.

Maybe balance the X seconds for 33% to 50% damage. That would at least force players to stick and move, if you're afraid that giving players the ability to deal damage a la classic rodeo for as long as they can would make them too efficient at taking out Titans.

3) Scorch's flame-shield killing pilots on his back obviously needs to be looked at and fixed. At the very least, the shield should cut into the Titan's shields/health while it's dealing damage to the pilot outside.

4) Make the grappling hook standard equipment. Unless the maps showcased thus far are COMPLETELY out of character with the rest of the maps in the game, then they've been designed far too much with the grappling hook in mind for it to be a loadout option.

5) The TTK is still too short. Part of this is map design. In TitanFall 1, you have so many evasive options on these maps full of wall-run possibilities, in-door/out-door transitions, shortcuts and hard turns. These maps are just wide-open killing fields, the average distance of engagement is longer, the average time to cover or opportunity to break line of sight is longer.

6) The red outline is pointless and frankly, a little insulting. Why not just a big neon sign with an arrow over the guy saying 'Shoot here!'?

7) Bounty Hunt isn't fun. It's great to try and push players into conflict with an objective, but not when every match plays out the exact same way and encourages camping. Eithr randomize the AI spawn points, swap player bases, anything. Right now it's simply boring.

The speed of the response to the first Tech Test gave me some hope for the game. Hopefully you guys are similarly communicative and responsive to the continued criticism as far as Titan balance, Titan v Pilot interaction and TTK.

I love how people forget that titans also have a melee attack, and only when I punch them and they go 50 feet away that they start punching in thin air.

Just a general comment that the controller layout screen showing controls for pilot, shared, and titan is a bit hard to read (because of the coloured glows against an animated background) and can be confusing for a new player. Might be an even worse problem for colourblind players.

Thought I'd share the last match of the night, and possibly the last match of the tech test till launch. It was another on going match, but thankfully not too far within reach.

Saw a little bit of everything in this one. Camping Snipers, teammates not doing jack, couldn't feed friendly Titan batteries due to some dude thinking it was cool to ride Titans all match... wish Titans had an ejecto seato lol

Hope I made GAF proud!

Hear hear. Glad to hear some positivity and not just more "it's not the first game its garbage" posts.

Man, it really is sad how many are just playing Bounty Hunt :(

It's the bread and butter mode of the tech test. I hear ya, man.

I lost like two $600 pools due to me once again forgetting to deposit 'em. I mean, I was helping my teammate Titan out who was fighting off two enemy Titans, what was I to do, right? I just hate having to deposit stuff, which breaks the action, in order to win.

Would love a regular TDM with Titans. That said, Amped is OK, but one thing I notice is, whenever we get the Titans in, that's when we start losing since no one wants to leave their Titan and you can't really capture points while actually inside one, no?

Sidenote: I kept trying that flame shield thing whenever someone rodeo-ed me and it didn't work! Should I not be aiming up? Should the +damage to flame shield perk be on? I do think this will be changed come release day but I wanted to test it out. :)

Once I figured out how to properly play Bounty, it quickly became my favourite mode of the TT. It's hard to take it in all at once if you're new to TF since there's no actual in-game tutorial for the separate modes.

Another thing I found confusing was all of the gauges on the Titan and when/why certain things became available when they did. The dash bar confused me until I actually found where it was, for example. I still don't know what the red+blue vertical gauge on the left hand side of the Titan UI means either, even after reading LV10.

Another thing I found that I really detest about Bounty Hunt is how.... well... it actually feels kinda gross to just mow down dudes getting out of their drop pods, Normandy style :(

It's completely out of character. It's not like the battles playing out like in Titanfall where the pilots were there to turn the tide.
Here, pilots are just straight murdering dudes for money and then leaving

It really is a fucking bizarre mode that felt like Respawn was trying to do a take on Halo 5's Warzone

I didn't know a time out was possible.

Sorry you can't hear something negative in a thread about spreading opinions. We don't shit on you for making positivity posts, yet you shit on us for making negativity posts.

And no one is saying it sucks because it's not an exact replica of the game. People are saying it sucks because it didn't improve off of the first game, it got worse, especially the maps.

And again, most of the positivity posts are people who never experienced the first game. Not all, but most.

Seriously, you have to agree that the maps are just god awful and completely destroy the games movement system that made it Titanfall.

You have to understand, how would you like it if your favorite pizza spot changed the sauce and they stopped doing delivery. The gun play is still great but the bad maps and forced team mechanic of battery stealing really take away from the experience. Add stuff but don't take away stuff no one complained about in the first place. A lot of us who post here want this game to be great.

Bounty hunt for exemple is just 5 vs 5 and because the maps are large,

Just my 2 cents.
this criticism of being too large was also thrown at the original game. Once everyone gets used to the maps and movements the maps will shrink. in saying that i do agree that bounty hunt should be at least 6v6. i'm not sure why they've gone to this 5v5 route. seems weird.

Also sorry for the dumb question, but how do you perform those Titan finishers? I understand the enemy Titan has to be in critical state, but how do you initiate the move?
It's the same thing from the first game only shown in third person. if they're in critical state all you have to do is get close and melee. it will trigger the animation.

Eh, it's not as bad as people make it up to be. I'm actually having fun with my friends, whenever the invite system decides to fucking work.

The EPG feels like something straight out of Star Wars. Absolutely loving how all the weapons have felt during this tech test 👍

Yeah, the weapons are the best part of the game and biggest improvement I think. I didn't love any of the weapons in titanfall 1. Mostly jsut stick with the default ar.

Yeah I realized this about 10 minutes after I posted.

Yeah, Im probably done with it. Game just isn't clicking with me and I'm not buying for what I hope it would be,

Why am I joining in progress so much? I've played like 15 matches tonight and every single of of them had been me joining in progress.

Finally got to play today. Some positives and negatives from a 4th (think it was 4) gen TF1 player.

Positive:
-Graphics engine is much smoother.
-Weapons feel good.
-There's some risk/reward with the new battery system.

Negative:
-Regular movement seems slower
-I haven't really enjoyed any of the maps. Way, way too open. Crossing long fields with no real wall running opportunities sucks.
-Still not sure if I like the new Titan system.

Played a bunch tonight. Damn I really hate the jarring third person switch when entering the titan.
Why would they intentionally abandon the seamless entry of the first one for disorienting jump cuts? Every time I get in the titan I feel like someone has spun me around blindfolded. Takes me a second to get my bearings.

I still think there should be AI troops in all titan modes to help that meter fill up faster. I play games where I get to spend a lot of time in a titan and then I play other games where I got into the thing once. I think a game called Titanfall centered completely around Titans should be a little more generous with the Titans. The first one didn't cheap out on the player when it came to the giant robots. I dont know why in the first place they'd restrict their main selling point.

I did have some fun tonight but at the moment I feel more inclined to play the first one again than to preorder the second.

Played a couple of hours of the second T2 test last night.

It definitely feels improved over last weekend, and I definitely had more fun with it. I'm a little more convinced to buy the full release, but I'm definitely not going to pre-order it before seeing some reviews.

It seems to be a test version issue. It's happening a lot more this weekend than the last.

Maybe they're even testing the join in progress stuff more this weekend so it's set to join in progress more frequently.

That's so annoying. Games that use matchmaking need a "don't waste my time" checkbox for that shit.

So even without the tactic that'll probably be nerfed, Scorch >>> Ion, yes? Feels that way.

As much as I don't like heavies, I'm inclined to agree. The amount of damage he can crank out is obscene, he's good at murdering pilots in buildings, and the hitbox on the main gun's canister is so big you can even swat pilots out of the air.

Anyway. Got to play a fair bit today, but it's still not grabbing me like I wish it would. I feel like I would've absolutely loved this if I hadn't played the original, or just been hungrier for it if I hadn't played BLOPS3. I still think it's good in its own right though, despite some wonkiness.

Yep. It's okay with the Spectres, maybe even makes some kind of sense, but it's a weirdly mean-spirited mode otherwise.

I only played this for one match, which I recognize isn't enough, but I simply wasn't enjoying it. I can spot some good design decisions here and there, some minor improvements, but most of the game feels like Titanfall minus a bunch of stuff everybody loved. There doesn't seem to be any hook in there for me.

It actually reminds me a bit of an older sequel, Virtual-On Force. That also took an extremely fast, exciting competitive game (Oratorio Tangram) and slowed it the hell down, and while it did add lots of new content and new modes, it was nearly impossible to play it and not sit there thinking, "I miss the speed!" But Force at least had a real hook (2v2 instead of 1v1 matches), a dramatic change which inherently gave it a different vibe. It could be considered a complementary experience, basically. What is Titanfall 2 giving me to compensate for the movement and controls suddenly feeling so sluggish and dull, for the environments to be so tiny, simple, and empty? Some play for e-sports reputation which I don't give a shit about?
