Titanfall - One year later.

That is horseshit. No way in hell was the game being made by the ex-Modern Warfare team, who is now working with EA of all people, in need of outside help in order to reach completion. PR bullshit is PR bullshit, end of story.

I don't care if MS bought that shit up, it is the lame ass story that is annoying. MS saved Titanfall! smh

For the next Titanfall, it should be commensurate to at least what is available now on Titanfall 1. What was available at launch was a disgrace.

Dear Respawn, please make sure satchel charges stay in Titanfall 2, love Mecha ok thanks bye.

There's a long, insightful and well written article by Keighley that explains exactly how Respawn/EA got into the position of needing Microsoft's backing to push Titanfall out the door.

But please, keep spouting bullshit.
...

I had no idea satchel charges could stick to pilots until now.

lol

Never should've been exclusive.

EA needs to redeem themselves in the eyes of the PS gamers they abandoned.

I'm pretty sure Sony abandoned PS gamers, since they didn't want to give out details about PS4's specs to Respawn and, instead, proposed Respawn to make a PSVita version of the (not yet finalized) game. MS put money to save Titanfall's development, maybe we should thank them for giving us a great game instead of complaining about exclusivity. Exclusive > nothing.

Anyway, I loved Titanfall even if I played it on 360. The game is brilliant and I hope to have a sequel soon. I don't care if it's exclusive or multiplatform (unless EA's server are as bad as they were in Fifa), I just want more of it. If they can manage to add more unlockables without breaking the balance and add a decent single-player campaign, I bet a lot more people will buy it.

keep Frontier's Defense please!

Read final hours of titanfall.

EA wasn't willing to fund the game any more. Without MS stepping in with cash, the game wouldn't have got finished.

Between this and "add single-player campaign", I'm not buying Titanfall 2 if they listen to you people.

Horrible suggestions.

Yeah, I'm sure. Like I said, horseshit...

Edit: You make up your mind with the information you have available and I make up my mind with the information I have available.

Well here, i'll give you a link to more information so that you have some semblance of an idea of what you're talking about.

I'll even give you a cliffnotes: The Activision lawsuit means that Respawn pissed away two years of development time and resources under EA trying to claim unpaid bonuses from Modern Warfare 2.

Adored the shit out of this game on launch and played it 24/7 for about a month, would still be playing it today if I didn't venture back into the mmo space.

Yeah, I'm sure. Like I said, horseshit...

I was not aware that we now applied anti-vaccer logic to video games.

Come on, dude. It's out there as fact.

Best thing about TF2 being Multiplatform is that many haters will likely turn into lovers (or at least stop their salty hate for it)

The bots were awful they have no place in a competitive Shooter. I play MP games to match wits With human counterparts. Shooting bots gave me no satisfaction at all.

Don't shoot them then, most seasoned players don't shoot bots unless they have silenced weapon. If you still don't want them there's a separate mode.

Lack of weapons and titan variety really crushed this game. Great gameplay, but ultimately could not overcome the sheer lack of weapons and titans to create a customized experience. There's no excuse in this day and age for a "competitive mp" game to suffer from these things.

Only way I will buy Titanfall 2 is if they address these major issues. It can have all those maps, but when the core doesn't have enough variety in this day and age of MP gaming it lost it's luster for me incredibly fast.

I loved that there weren't a whole lot of weapons and there were just 3 titan variety's. I find mp games getting so bloated these days with too many guns that can be outfitted with even more attachments and in the end the majority of the community still gravitates to only a handful of the possible options since the rest is underpowered.

I agree on the weapons, but more titans would have been cool.

The Titanfall community is so divided, it will be interesting to see what Respawn do for TF2. Half of the community want no bots, half want them. Half wants SP, the other half doesn't. Half of the community wants a ton of guns, the other half doesn't. Half the community wants more titans, the other half doesn't.. etc etc. Exaggerating a bit on the half but you get my point.

What kind of titans would they bring though, all three in Titanfall have their own characteristics. I mean do people need different looking chassis for titans or titans that work differently or what?

I find the gameplay to be incredibly fun but as a non multiplayer guy I really don't see the reason to play the game every day. I play it from time to time but there's nothing else to the game, doesn't even feel rewarding. But as I said I don't like online games that much so I'm not the one to judge.

The arc titan from Frontier Defense would work decent in multiplayer I think, would need to be toned down a bit to make it balanced, maybe the electricity only works when you have your shield or something. But with some tweaks I think it'd work out good.

I'm not really good at making stuff like that up, but the three titans currently in the game, while they all play their roles.. I find them.. boring and plain? I'm not sure how to put it.

I don't think the game NEEDS it in TF2, I'm not one of those to complain about lack of content really as I loved the game even at launch, but I wouldn't say no to it either.

This game haf one of the most unique online experiences I had the pleasure playing in an FPS.

I wish they developed more content at launch because the concept alone was not enough to sell the game, I commend them for trying though.

I love this game and I too hope they keep the bots for 2. Also, I don't really want an increased player count, I feel like it's a good balance atm.

Also I thought the smart pistol was one of the coolest things about the game :/ I hope that in the sequel they have more "future" weapons, but I do see that the balance could be worked on.

Great thread, OP. I have never played Titanfall because I don't have a gaming PC nor an XBO. I really wish EA had released it on PS4. Either way, I am very much looking forward to playing the sequel.

Between this and "add single-player campaign", I'm not buying Titanfall 2 if they listen to you people.

Agreed. I don't understand why people are so opposed to having multi-only titles. If a team of 50 is going to spend 2 years working on a game that I'm going to spend 95% of my time playing multiplayer in, I would rather those 50 people worked on the multiplayer rather than 35 of them doing the main event and the other 15 doing something I'll touch once for a few hours.

Then I found out that people playing with controllers had aim assist, so if you came up against one of them they would blow you away because of the locked on targeting.

That's not really how aimassist in Titanfall works. It doesn't play for you or cheat your shots. I have watched a lot of different players use those controls; you'll never find unskilled mouse players suddenly becoming great gamepad players. If they were outshooting you, they were probably just doing better that day.

Our top players in-house are a mix of M/K and gamepad players.

Gamepad players do get analog movement controls, which is an interesting difference.

Mouse players with a 40mm are forever scary.

Read final hours of titanfall.

That article is great and mortifying and truthful. Feels like nobody read it, but it's one of the most gut-punchingly genuine looks into the making of a videogame that you could find (I r bias). At any rate it's worth picking up just to see the footage of proto-titans fighting it out in a gutted Ratchet & Clank engine running on the PS3 at 60fps.

...was a weird few years, man.

I love the movement system, it's amazing. Easy to learn, hard to master. It's the best part of the game. On the other hand, I hate the Call of Duty template the game is drenched in. The rain of xp, unlocks, perks, the obscene amount of bar filling... it's nauseating. It makes me feel like a hamster in a wheel. And I think it's my biggest problem with this game: it's fun, but I have zero desire to go back and play it again. It has no hooks.

My hope is that Epic flat out copies the movement system for the new Unreal Tournament, that would be insane.

I have to thank you guys for the great controller support by the way. It really disappoints me when shooters don't ship with aim assist on PC, I can't sit back on the couch/bed and play the game from there.
You will be slaughtered by mouse players.

Hope that is kept in the sequel.

Yeah, I'm sure. Like I said, horseshit...

Edit: You make up your mind with the information you have available and I make up my mind with the information I have available.

So what information do you have available that makes it clear Respawn didn't need MS help to get the game released?

Personally I love Titanfall and believe it is currently the best FPS on the market and the best online shooter since MW2. The support Respawn have provided in game modes, DLC, and bugs since it launched has been brilliant and really made the game have a lot of replay value. It's a pity there are so few people playing the more obscure modes as these are some of the best in the game - Last Titan Standing, Pilot Skirmish, Frontier Defence, and Marked for Death are really fun modes that keep me coming back to the game.

What I would like to see in the sequel are:

Single player: I admired what Respawn tried in putting the single player narrative into the MP but it just didn't work. You couldn't keep up with the cut scenes in the corner as you were too busy trying to kill the enemy. For a new IP it really needed a more grounded single player to set the mythology of the world. I've played the game for over 300 hours and I still don't know what the story is about. Get a proper story editor in, better actors to provide the VO, and even if it's just 4/5 levels, set the story and lore out so we care at least a little about the sides we are fighting for.

Customisable Titans - Not so much in having multiple choices on what load out etc. but a way to make your Titan look more personal. There were some cracking insignia's awarded in the game, but they were so small placed on your Titan it didn't feel like they were really there and couldn't show off your achievements to other players. Different colours would be a start.

Better team balancing. In some modes when one team is being crushed you get rage quitters etc. leaving one team heavily outnumbered - which is a particular problem in the likes of Last Titan Standing. I'd like to see teams rebalanced were this to happen in the sequel.

From an aesthetic point of view I'd love to see an ice level - there's a lot of levels in TF1 that are just hot climates, but when you consider the story is based (thinly) around fuel, an ice planet would make sense since the majority of Earths fuel can be found under these sort of environments.

More monsters - either in a Frontier Defence style, or a new species to play as would be cool. We see these lumbering behemoths in the background, and fight on the remains of a few of them - to have our titans go head to head with these would be awesome.

No killstreaks - One of the things that I love about TF is that I'm not constantly having to look out for air strikes and robotic dogs.

Really like the burn cards but it might be cool to have the ability to combine burn cards to make them more unique and powerful in places. E.G - Ghost Squad + Amped Archer Rocket = a gun that doesn't give off a hint of where you are aiming for.

I've rambled on enough, but that's my thoughts. Hopefully with the game being mulitplatform now it will really get the player base it deserves.

Don't care what anyone says Titanfall is the game so far for me of this Generation!!!

Does anyone know if these DLC maps have now merged with all the playlists? Been away from home since it happened so I'm unsure

They really screwed over the PC userbase. No servers, annoying methods to region switch, poor matchmaking options... there was no way this game would thrive on PC with these options. I hope Titanfall 2 is out of EA's hands because the series has a lot of potential and I highly enjoyed the game.

Does any game which is also on consoles thrive on PC? I'm not a PC gamer so honest question.

my last play was before destiny launched, i get back this week for the season pass and i was amazed by how much fun this game still been

Vince Zampella himself confirmed it

When asked whether or not the team wishes they could change anything about the original product, Respawn COO Dusty Welch said, "Platform for me comes to mind right away." Though Zampella then explained, "Well, we needed that, though. We couldn't do the game," Dusty clarified the exclusivity was always a business decision rather than anything else.

Battlefield does pretty well on pc,but it's the only one I can think of (Diablo 3 too, but that's a pc -> console port). He's right, though, the pc version never had a chance against pc centric games. And now they're making a sequel instead of updating the game: again, console mindset.

Yeah, I'm sure. Like I said, horseshit...

As long as you're consistent and feel similarly about SFV and Capcom/Sony. I have no issue with you feeling this way.

And oh so satisfying. :) Stopped a particularly good runner today on Angel City with my Stryder's 40 mm from the alley while he was crossing on canals side. Split second opportunity, but goosed him mid-jump. Feels good man.

Your in-house players ever play in the CTF tourney's?

Wait, the maps are free on xb1?

Guess I know what I'm playing today, :lol

My goty the last year and that was just the base game. I don't need any more weapons in a sequel, just more customization (I actually like what Advanced warfare did with all the cosmetic stuff), maybe a single player mode, and maybe a different way to regen (this is what ultimately made me stop playing).

Well I've been getting DLC maps in Attrition and Hardpoint lately.

Got this the 1st day it came out, it really is a great read - as are all the other "final hours" (Geoff really doesn't do enough of these).

I understand you have greater insight as you work for the company, but I watched a person not once, not twice, but multiple times move their crosshair and noticed a weird tracking motion, and then I watched this abnormal aim pattern where it locked on and followed me to an extent, albeit it wasn't perfect. I asked if the person was using a controller and sure enough they were. I went to google about Titanfall and aim assist for controllers on the PC version, and a lot of people reported the same.

https://twitter.com/Respawn/status/426733968977715200

I'm not saying the person was overall crazy. But I do not find any kind of aim assist a fair competition in the PC market when people with mouse and keyboards do not have it as well - not that I would want it at all. It's not a fair assessment of skill and makes it not fun overall.

I understand it might be needed on the console as tracking on the mouse versus controller is not equal, but to bring it to the PC, it adds skill to an otherwise skill-less person, it makes it unfair, and it doesn't showcase the potential of the player. Could you imagine people who play CS:GO, plug in a controller and have an aim assist, no matter the severity of the assistance? That is one of the reasons I stopped playing, and that is one of the reason I am avoiding future titles (read: waiting for a cheaper price point). I loved the mechanics and overall gameplay, but it's the little things that ruin it for me (that and I would've really enjoyed an interesting single player with Mech's).

I tried Titanfall at Eurogamer Expo in 2013, and I didn't really think much of it (Expo really isn't a conducive environment for a MP game), but I wanted to give it another chance on PC.

Alas, I don't really like Origin as it's difficult to add Origin games to Steam (I use Big Picture so this is a must), and even though I've worked out a way to do it now I hear the PC version is dead. I'd just be wasting money at this point.

But I may check out its sequel on PS4 now that multiplatform has been confirmed. Hopefully this one has a single player campaign, too.

It did exactly what I said it would do, have the player base drop off a cliff. It's 2015. MP games must be living esport games these days. There must be a constant flow of new competitive content and balances coming from the developers on a seemingly indefinite basis. And sorry, maps don't count. New maps are overrated. Players want new guns, new Titans, new missiles, new abilities, new toys to play with. You think League would be where it is now if it only ever released new maps to replace Summoner's Rift? Or Hearthstone would grow as fast as it has if it only ever released new boards? No. Players demand new champions and new cards to keep the gameplay fresh...if you want them to keep coming back.

Titanfall didn't do that. The gameplay grew stale and players left to go back to their living esport MP games to catch up on the new champions or the new cards that were released. The same will happen to Titanfall 2 if they don't support it with a constant stream of timely releases of new guns, new Titans, and new toys.

Bought it for the eqivilant of £5 I think on PC. Was a cool game, but I didn't really get into it. I struggle to play a MP game when I don't have friends that play it as well. Probably played about 20 matches or so.

I hear the PC version is dead. I'd just be wasting money at this point..
If you can get it cheap enough (on a good sale) its worth buying if your only really interested in death match, on PC the game has sub 2000 players globally on a daily basis - but most of the players are in attrition mode (titanfalls death match mode), which means its really easy to get into a match in that mode. Unfortunately if your like me and your into capture the points (hard point) or capture the flag, the game really isn't worth buying now (CTF had 50 players globally last night when i went on for example).

TLDR, if you can get it cheap enough and really like death match, it is worth a purchase.

Read final hours of titanfall.

EA wasn't willing to fund the game any more. Without MS stepping in with cash, the game wouldn't have got finished.

I've read it, and don't believe for a moment that EA was no longer willing to fund a game from the creators of CoD.

Just because someone write it doesn't make it 100% fact.

Anyways I love the game. The netcode and feel of playing a fantastic, and I can only hope the sequel finds way more success.

All true here - my friends and I use Titanfall on PC to play deathmatch together basically. Small community but it isn't totally locked out on skill.
