TLOU Factions Multiplayer will possibly be F2P according to job listingsr

TLOU Online will probably be a Destiny 2 style hybrid of free to play and paid.

Free to play but you have to pay to get all the story content. And requires PS Plus.

Sony obviously loves Bungie's business model if they bought them.

I mean let's be honest. How many people were super psyched to pay $70 for the Last of Us Multiplayer?

I looooved factions. But I hope it's free to play.

Seeing as this person hasn't been hired yet and they want them to 'get in early', are we looking at 2024 then?
We are looking for the right candidate to get in early and help define the processes, requirements, and infrastructure that will support the project through launch and beyond.

Pretty much all of the top multiplayer games on PC are F2P. Escape from Tarkov being the only exception for now.
Aren't GTA Online and Rainbow Six Siege still paid games tho?

And Destiny 2 isn't really free to play since the expansions are paid.

Minecraft too. Sorta counts.

Just poking fun at how most people here look down on GaaS and F2P yet there are lots of good ones out there.

True.

I could totally see it going this route along with cross platform. Pretty standard with these kind of games nowadays.

I love GAAS. Gimme more GAAS. I hope Sony buys Ubisoft and they expand The Division franchise.

Season 5 No GIF by The Office

You just have to look at how well received Overwatch 2 was to see what an improvement free 2 play can bring.

By that of course I mean it makes the game worse, but just makes it so people who need a carrot to chase because they don't actually enjoy the gameplay can get there dopamine rush.

It better be F2P and with an emphasis on high framerates on a wide range of HW. Otherwise its going to bomb on PC. The PC MP space its a bloodbath and PC gamers arent automatically glued to Sony IPs like PS gamers are. You can spend millons on marketing and then a 10 USD early access game shows up on Steam and by word of mouth becomes a multiple million seller. Stealing Factions mojo.

better not be cross gen

It has to be cross gen. Console are still relatively hard to find and there is a huge TLOU player base on PS4. Making that IP PS5 only, especially for a F2P game wouldn't make much business sense.

It'll definitely appease some on gaming forums but again, it'd make zero business sense.

Same way. I love the heavier feel of naughty dog multiplayer as opposed to jumping around like a maniac (except titan fall 2). But yeah I would have to pause a long while if it was $70. Like someone else mentioned it'll probably go the destiny route of free/paid story or whatever.

As long as they don't lock guns behind a pay wall. I never took issue with it cause I didn't mind the regular guns but some people were pissed! Git good scrubs cause hunters be eatin

Tbh...it would be weird to charge you for something that was literally was free when buying The Last Of Us 1.

To charge for it as a different product for 2 would be kinda odd. I thought it would be simply some extra in the menu of The Last Of Us 2 or packed into the remake or something, but this makes more sense.

I would be more impressed if they were hiring an Anti-Cheat Team for the Master Race of Cheaters that will be blessing this game on Day 1.

I don't know that there is a game the frustrates me more right now. Just fucking show it, or give us some details. Hell, I should probably just do myself a favor and write it off, given NDs dedication to political agendas these days. Just seeing this game in a post title, with yet again no news, puts me in a bad mood.

Yeah I don't get it either, his hopes for this game must be rather low if it only can competes by being f2p.
You don't launch "free to play" because you think that's the only way you can compete. You launch as a "free to play" title because they are vastly more profitable than boxed products for a one time fee of 60$/70$.

The term "Free to play" is a marketing term. What these games really should be called are Microtransaction driven games, because that's what they are.

I'm aware of that, but he says it needs to be f2p to compete with other games on pc.

While that is possible, so far it's F2P games (and ones with monthly subscription, although apart from FFXIV are there any?) that don't require PS+ for online play, I find it doubtful Sony would change this for their own title.

The Last of Us has always been praised for its single-player narrative, but the game also features a surprisingly good multiplayer mode. Despite the enjoyable multiplayer mode, Last of Us 2 chose to launch as a single-player only title.

However, Naughty Dog is currently working on a brand new multiplayer stand-alone title set in the Last of Us universe. The game was originally supposed to be included with Last of Us 2, but grew to be a much bigger project.

Details on the new multiplayer component are limited at the moment, but a new job listing for Producer-Live Ops at Naughty Dog has now hinted that The Last of Us multiplayer could be launching as a free to play title.

Source: Naughty Dog Job Listing

The job listing claims that Naughty Dog is currently working on a major multiplayer title. Last of Us multiplayer has already been announced, and this seems to be the game in the job listing.

As seen above, one of the bonus skills mentions free to play live title. It states,

"PROVEN EXPERIENCE IN A PRODUCTION ROLE SUPPORTING A AAA, FREE TO PLAY, LIVE TITLE"
This could mean that Naughty Dog is looking to adopt a free to play model for the upcoming Last of Us multiplayer. Free to play games have taken the industry by storm in the last few years, so this does not seem too far-fetched to believe.

Sony has already shown their interest in the live-service market and Naughty Dog appears to be leading the charge. At the moment, Sony is aiming to deliver 10 live service games in the next 4 years.

If Naughty Dog's multiplayer game turns out to be a free to play release, it could also have interesting implications for a potential PC release. Herman Hulst has stated that the company could offer live-service games day one on PC, therefore Last of Us multiplayer could be the first title to see a day one PC launch.

The Last of Us Multiplayer

The Last of Us multiplayer is also said to feature easily changeable content. The developers at Naughty Dog have been known to push the boundaries of the medium, so fans can expect lots of surprises from the upcoming release.

Naughty Dog seems to be very ambitious with the multiplayer project, and a free to play release could elevate the upcoming release to new heights. The previous title's multiplayer component was a huge success, but it remains to be seen if the developers can capture audiences once again, with the new entry.
