Now, on one hand, someone (including myself) can argue that they should've upgraded gameplay to TLOU2 level as well, but on the other hand it doesn't make sense cuz then they have to competely alter original vision which then could've lead to complete and total re-design of the whole game and it's 2-3 years of work at least. From what I've played of remake so far (can't say anything about combat and how it changed yet), they've changed like 95% of everything there was in original game even including idle animations, character idle stances, certain camera shots during real-time cut-scenes, completely changed some photos, promos, signs, mirrors etc. etc. etc. Speacking of real-time cut-scenes btw. Effin' hell, to say it's enormous jump in quality is to say nothing, especially considering that in original game all cut-scenes were pre-rendered and that's all they could squeeze out of this engine back then, but even still, there's a crap ton of aliasing, low quality blocky and pixelated volumetric lights and light shafts in these old pre-rendered videos.

I mean, don't get me wrong, all of this at a time was state of the art and I've played original game way back when it was released on launch day on PS3 (played and finished it 5 times at least) and I could't believe my eyes. I've replayed PS4 "Remaster" last year before playing TLOU2 and just in case someone still needs a reminder (cuz maybe this someone completely forgot how it was back then and still is right now) that "Remaster" for PS4 (which wasn't a real remaster like Uncharted 1-3 for PS4 for example) looks like crap at times, look for comparisons I've made under a spoiler above. After playing PS5 remake myself, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that this remake is 100% justified after almost 10 years since release of the original game not only to bring it in line with TLOU2 (which I'm sure already in the works for PS5), but cuz it had to be done. Knowing ND and the fact that they're always evolve and revolutionize their tech over time, TLOU3 will blow our minds and launch our brains to stratosphere when it launches at the end of PS5's life cycle. But goddamn, they need to add RT local shadows (even if it means 1440p 30 instead of 4K 30) via update and for PS5 version of TLOU2 as well, cuz that's where PS5 remake falls short visually (even though you can only spot this in specific scenes during gameplay). To be fair though, pretty much all complex 3D games without RT local shadows suffering from this disease too and..., I guess I just wasn't expecting to see it in PS5 remake tbh.

I haven't payed $70 for this remake though (traded in Ghost of Tsushima and paid 1400RUB for a price difference, which I think is a good price to me as an owner of original game) and I can only recommend paying that much only to those who haven;t played original game and PS4 "remaster" at all.

I paid full price for it, no regrets and I've played the PS3 version and the PS4 version multiple times.

The game is fucking stellar.

The remake adds ALOT to the immersive and visceral nature that the game was already aiming for. It completely elevates the performances to another level.

It's better than most current gen games and that justified the price tag, for me anyway.

Demon's Souls seems like a better example of updating PS3 games. 👀
Demons Soul Remake was really good too. It was quite the jump up, but that is partially because Fromsoft (as much as I love them) it garbage at the technical aspects of games, ND isnt.

Fromsoft's art is on another level though (best in the game) and the Remake really brought that out in full force.

That could be a fair point if it wasn't for one and very important thing - Souls games were designed with co-op and MP in mind, MP for TLOU was and still is an afterthought in no way required to enjoy the SP portion of the game.
It's still is a fair point when considering the price.

An afterthought implies that it was basic and shitty when in reality it was anything but. It was good. Enough to become very popular, and its absence feels like a cop-out.

This should be a gold standard for how remakes must be done without altering original story and gameplay experience, but at the same time adding modern and quality of life features as well:

I meant it in a way that it wasn't as important as SP portion without which MP would't even be a thing. To me, all MP in primarily SP and story-driven games like Uncharted, Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Batman Arkham etc. are absolutely not needed and only there as an afterthought to prolong the game's life and earn extra cash via DLC and microtransactions. The only amazing example of MP / co-op in single player only games outside of SP portion I could think of is Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory.

It's still is a fair point when considering the price.
I'm sure for many people it's not a problem cuz they only care about SP, which is the main selling point here, even though the price for some owners of the original is not fair... or should I say 30-40 bucks not fair.

Yea - Its goddamn fantastic. And makes playing TLOU 1 right into TLOU 2 an unforgettable experience.

They added in the gore from TLOU 2 (its even better here) and also the enemies begging for their lives when they are last nan standing, its a visceral experience.

Neil Druckmann said that this was a brand-new project for Naughty Dog.

It clearly was, just like Demon's Souls Remake for Bluepoint. They completely redone everything which was not related to the core design of the game and gameplay experience.

Remember those screenshot comparisons use the ps4 remaster so if you compared the original on the ps3 the difference is even bigger.
True, but at the same time I simply can't call PS4 version a ture remaster cuz it isn't all that better in comparison to original, it's just has better shadows, slightly better textures and runs in 4K which is not true when it comes to Uncharted 1-3 remasters made by Bluepoint (which can only run at 1080p 60 btw on PS4 and PS5 + they were released after PS4 version of TLOU) and I mean... sure, they aren't remakes like SOTC was for PS4, but still, Bluepoint did a lot more work (even though the first Uncharted is still boring repetitive trash gameplay-wise) than ND did for PS4 version of the first TLOU.

Anyway, I'll be posting more comparisons, even though it kinda pointless at this point cuz what I've posted already, clearly showing the difference:messenger_relieved:

This

I've discussed this ad nauseam at release, but to me it doesnt look better than Part II (also Digital Foundry's opinion, btw), and as a PS5 remake, it should imo.

It actually looks worse in places, 'cause animations were mostly untouched, and Part II is a masterclass in animation, so it kinda stands out.

Fidelity from a PS5 game but animations from 2013 was jarring to look at, even with them adding animation blending.

And I know that including prone would make them redesign entire levels, but not adding a dodge button is just unforgivable. "Oh but Ellie is more agile and Joel is more like a tank" my ass, there are cutscenes where he dodges punches during the game. They didnt bother touching original animations, so imagine creating new ones for the dodge mechanic.

Its an improvement over the original that I love, but still, they have wasted the opportunity to make a really special product with this one.

The gold standard would require them charging a fair price for the same content.

Yes because when they release 4K remasters of movies they charge you less.

This phenomenon is entirely an online gamer thing. You are free to skip the game, it’s not really meant for people who have already played it but they can jump onboard if they wish.

Do not agree it’s the gold standard though, Demons Souls is an easy choice there.

I should be more mature about it, but every time I think about TLOU, I think of my time with TLOU2 and how much I hated it outside of it's visuals. I have never seen a game aside from maybe the newest god of war have such great lighting and effects like Snow and others. I only wish the writing and pacing had matched that absurdly high level of peak quality.

These shots for this remake are absolute eye candy.

How animations (which are not terrible by any means) can make this Remake look worse is beyond me. Visual presentation like art and art design, world and geometry complexity, LOD etc. is what makes 90% of the whole presentation of the game (not to mention other visual things) and from what I've seen, they've changed animations which you can clearly see by looking at Joel even and how he walks (not to mention Idle stuff, massively better animated backpacks etc.). I mean, to me it's such a minor thing to complain about that I don't even think about it that much. Remake looks amazing and better than TLOU2 even, cuz PS5 can do way more and better than PS4 allowed them to. Also, A Plague Tale: Requiem looks like a next gen game, but I personaly don't care if animations during gameplay don't look pefect, it's just not that important to me and not the main selling point, even though I wish they were better.

They completely redone 95% of the game's visuals, while not touching core design and gameplay. It should be obvious (cuz it is) that redoing the whole mocap work wasn't in the cards cuz 1) it's a lot of work and 2) guess what, they also need to re-record the whole VA work as well cuz mocap and VA was done at the same time. The other alternative would me match old VO with new mocap which I'm sure would be an absolute nighmare to go through, hense it wasn't an option too. Have you tought about all that? I'm not sure you did. It's not that easy to do as you may think and given how much work that is, they might as well make the whole game from scratch which also wasn't in the cards. I honestly don't think there is something to complain about here, outside of maybe lack of RT local shadows and...

And I know that including prone would make them redesign entire levels, but not adding a dodge button is just unforgivable. "Oh but Ellie is more agile and Joel is more like a tank" my ass, there are cutscenes where he dodges punches during the game. I do agree that adding dodge move could benefit combat, cuz otherwise it is an instant death from runners and clickers if you're not careful especially during the first school encounter.

tlou ran at like 20fps
Oh, I know. Which just goes to show that they've pushed PS3 hardware a lot and beyond what it realistically can do with good performance, but... the game just can't stand the test of time in it's original form even with better performance and screen resolution, not always at the very least.

That's exactly what I wanted and would have paid for though.
The jump from TLOU to TLOU was massive, but to trully understand why, you need to not remember how the old game was, but to play through it again and then go straight to TLOU II, which is exactly what I did. I'm with ya, but there's also very important thing to understand - it's not a good idea to match both games gameplay wise, cuz then both of them will lose their distinct identity. What they did with Remake was the right thing to do and they also added some stuff from TLOU II and removed ancient stuff from original game, which is what I would've done as well, while keeping gameplay closer to original. There must be this jump in quality still present in TLOU II, cuz in terms of design and gameplay, it's a completely different game than TLOU.

TLOU II it's almost MGSV in comparison to MGSIV, but with more compact aspect of the MGSIV design still present and with a lot more hand crafter stuff which is not in MGSV cuz of the open world nature of it. I've been thinking about what they could possibly do now and with the power of PS5 at their hands, I think taking and embrasing the whole MGSV espionage concept and gameplay (minus some obvioulsy not realistic stuff like robots and of course base management) is the way to go for TLOU III... just... again... with more hand crafter stuff. Just remembering stuff from TLOU II right now...
The whole Ellie's journey on the boat under the havy rain and with so many stealth options. Ascent to the giant skyscraper as Abby and then absolutely terrefying, nerve-racking and blood-boiling descent from it to the ground...
Can't wait to replay PS5 version of TLOU II which we'll probably get next year, cuz there's not a whole lot else they're planning for 2023 except Spider-Man 2 when it comes to 1st party stuff.

Holy Crap OP! The gulf in overall image quality between those screenshots makes the original Last of Us look like a freakin' PS2 game.

The Rock Clapping GIF
Well, I won't go that far. I'd say that during certain points the game looks terrible, while during others it still looks pretty good (real remaster could've fixed all that, but obviously Bluepoint not worked on it and so we didn't get it). But there's a lot more to cover. Thankfully, I already played through TLOU "Remaster" last year, made a ton of screenshots and I only need to make then again which is not easy, cuz Photo Modes for example are different and I hate that the new one in remake does not allow the camera to go through objects ( :messenger_pouting: ) and the old one has ancient and restricive camera controls.

The TLOUR on PS4 run as high as 4k? Didn't it run close to 720p on ps3?

My problem with this remake is that they remade the part that needed remaking the least. They should have focused on gameplay and level design. These elements aged terribly. PS3 version is still looking decent thanks to a strong art direction.

Yeah so if you played the original on ps3 and then switched to the ps5 remake the difference would be insane.
Obviously, but PS4 "remaster" is not that better than original PS3 version, it's just runs at 4K (or 1800p 60) and there's better shadows and slightly better textures, that's it. The overall image and look of the game is very washed out, blury and very dirty. There's a lot of extremely aliased white outlines around characters, terrible pixelated effect from flashlight on objects in dark rooms, very unrealistic fog during even the very first encounter with runners at the beginning etc. It is not true 4K image you can see in various other remasters for PS4 with nattive 4K support.

I couldn't say it is a better example, cuz original game looked like a hot and barely working trash in comparison to TLOU:messenger_relieved:
What is this hyperbole? Demon’s Souls ran absolutely fine on the PS3 except for the fire dragon burning the bridge and the typical swamp areas. Barely working? Jesus. I don’t remember one single but in that game. It was one of the best looking games for the console in 2009. It also looked much better than Dark Souls.

The Last of Us was a constant slideshow on PS3.

I've played the game on PS3 myself. Dark Souls is not that much better looking in comparison when it comes to visuals. Original Demon's Souls looked like trash, worked like it was assebled using scotch tape and I'm not talking about performance here. That's how I would discribe some games made in Russia - Cryostasis for example, it has the same fealing of a barely working game with an ambition the team just can't fully realise and don't have anyone on the team for this to happen. Remake made by Bluepoint absolutely destroys what From did then and doing now. It also clearly shows they're far behind from what Bluepoint did and won't be at the same level of quality cuz they just can't be. Their art and art design is second to none though, that's probably the only thing they can do on an outstanding level. Only starting from DSIII and Bloodborne they showed it all in full force though.

Yep, here's another example of modern remake done right, but we still need to play it to know for sure. Can't wait. DS is one of my favorite series of all time. DS2 still looks amazing in 4K all maxed on PC though, it even had SSR and way better shadows, SSAO etc. I hope they'll be doing DS2 next and completely rework DS3 to make it more in line with 1 and 2.

I haven't played original RE2 and RE3, but clearly RE2 Remake is definitive version of that game.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Normally I roll eyes at people who say theyd rather just want new games to play instead of playing classic games or even a remaster.

But when you remake a game to its basically a new game, I'd believe we've gone to far, and I agree that I'd rather want a new game than a remake that's a new game on a old one.

I know I'm in the minority here though given it sold well

Yeap, this debate is not going anywhere. Despite the technical proficiency of Bluepoint, its remake is borderline a travesty to the original game’s art direction and overall atmosphere. It comes nowhere close to the eternal masterpiece From created back in 2009 that was just a continuation of the their King’s Field work.

What you call cut and paste I call a vision. 🤷🏻‍♂️
