Today's music is garbage

Most genres are still going strong, and there are many albums each year that creates buzz online.

Some recent examples is
Swans - To Be Kind
The War On Drugs - Lost in the Dream
Deafheaven - Sunbather
The Hotelier - Home, Like Noplace is There
Todd Terje - It's Album Time

You just have to pay attention to the right places and discussions.

"This is a thing I imagined saying, and then daydreamed about being a hero for it, the lone musical hero".

It's been the Golden Age of Japanese rock (and even all of Japan's music actually imo) ever since the early 00s, I don't want to go back.
God bless the Internet, I would've never went down that beautiful rabbit hole without you.

Jennifer has amazing taste, listening to hit songs by Britney Jean Spears, the voice of a generation.

But people are allowed to like whatever they like, I'm not sure why this kid thinks it's OK to just slag people off just because they don't like rock or metal. Personally, I'm not too fond of rock or metal, but I accept that people have different tastes because it's all chemical signals in the brain or something. It's really close-minded. Hopefully he grows out of it though, I know some 18-year-olds who still act like Oasis are gods and blah blah blah.

You just need to make use of the Internet to actually look for new music as opposed to making vids complaining about it :/

I mean stuff like this, Milli Vanilli, INXS etc. are all guilty pleasures, but the fact that they were so big kind of proves my point, underlining the fact of how little talent was required to go multiplatinum at that point.

Why are you mentioning Milli Vanilli and INXS in the same sentence as if they have anything in common?

Didn't watch the video, but music has definitely dropped in quality the past decade. I've actually been listening to more country these days, which I never thought would happen. Rap sucks, and most pop is just recycled over and over. Need more rock groups like Foo Fighters, Gaslight Anthem......

I can't even compute this.

I love new music. Beatles is so goddamn hard to listen to nowadays.

But new music *is* good for background chilling. It's a mood that permeates the atmosphere, rather than something that you concentrate on.

When I was in my twenties, I railed against whatever the popular music was at its time, did the whole college radio DJ thing. As I got older, I grew more intolerant of the indie music snobs and just played whatever I wanted. At 40, I really don't know if today's pop is good or bad, simply because I don't really listen to it. I've heard a handful of songs, some were dreadful, others were pretty catchy.

The only modern music I really can't stand is twangpop (AKA "country" music). That shit is so formulaic its hard not to see past the McDonalds assembly line process it goes through. The fact that a lot of the singers sing songs that someone else wrote doesn't really bother me, country has always been that way. Its just very samey sounding and homogenized. Whatever is successful, copy it to death.

Lol I wish this would go viral

Why? It cherry picks simple songs from great artists to validate mediocre artists lyrics. You really want to put any of these three up against the Beatles, Queen and Led Zeppelin? It wouldn't end well, not well at all.

Queen, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles have been around for four decades or more. Four decades from now Kanye West will be fart stain on the underpants of Pop, because that's what he is, Pop, for the masses. Much like the Beatles, but without the talent.

Thing is, none of these are the greatest lyricists of all time, arguing over them is like asking which flavour Ice Cream is best, Vanilla or Strawberry, hint it's a taste thing. If you're talking lyrics then there are so many artists that would make Kanye or indeed The Beatles look like gibbering idiots. It's a foolish point to make because music isn't about just lyrics, it's about feeling and soul. And putting Black Unicorn which is ok but totally forgettable against Black Dog which is a memorable iconic song is just silly.

Amen brother! Milli Vanilli were a produced bag of shite, INXS were one of the best acts of the last 30 years. This just says to me the poster you replied to only heard Kick, and not the wealth of top quality stuff they put out prior to that.

Lol that's why I hope it goes viral. It's not that it makes sense. It's just that if the roles were reversed it'd go viral.

I've been going over my ginormous collection and the only moderately new bands I have are bands from earlier 2000s I think. I care very very little about what comes out. When a band has 4 or so albums I might get interested and also if they show growth and cohesion. We have so much from classical to folk to metal to electronic up to 2000. Stuff beyond that started getting redundant if it wasn't really good and now stuff beyond 2010 is just.... bleak. I barely even know of many decent newer bands these days and honestly I have so much music I don't have the time to care.

More or less the newer bands I do have are electronic or indie rockish type stuff.

If yer saying music is no better or worse I tend to disagree. We are in a dip imo. Things are getting very samey and we have plundered the depths of a large amount of genres.

If you were to go back into the 60s it was insane. You had all those pop bands, folk bands, rock bands, and electronic geniuses like Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, and Klaus Schulze coming into play. If you think todays music even holds a candle to that 65-75 period you are out of your mind imo.

Quote below me is truth. We haven't sorted through it yet but there will never be bands totally like the originals imo nor do they have the same quality MOST of the time. Today's culture reflects the quality somewhat imo and it has taken a plunge. All my opinion but even after sorting through everything I seriously doubt I will care much to what I have now. It's like saying I am going to find a Mozart of today easy peasy. It ain't gonna happen. Same with Beatles and Clash and Cure and Neil Young and King Crimson yadda yadda. There are very few bands today that could even claim to hold a candle to these guys. It's a culture thing I am sure of it.

First of all, they've got the science of promotion down ton exact formula these days. They're not gonna back a band unless it's a "sure thing", so there's much fewer acts that get the amount of mainstream exposure that they used to. Everyone else does their own promotion.

Also, King Crimson? Great example. They weren't exactly chart toppers back then, likely being brushed aside for radio airplay by The Archies. So as far as you know, there could be an amazing band out there that would blow your mind... but they don't have exposure.

lol do people not realize that being born later is better for music since you can experience the good now and the good before? It does not make any sense to cut yourself off of good music because some of your favorite music comes from a different era.

I was actually having this conversation with my friend a few days ago, as he and one of my other friends noticed that I listen to Ariana Grande on Spotify (why is this a big deal, I don't know) and he basically flat out told me "Cheddahz, you're the one that got us into "indie music" (I hate this term a whole lot, but that's a discussion for another time), why are you listening to the most random stuff now" and I was basically like "because I like, what else?"

The conversation went on for a while and at the end, I told him "I'm grateful to be living in a age where you can easily find music online, follow music blogs, and revisit old songs that you liked forever ago. Yes, there may be music that you consider "garbage", but that doesn't mean it's "garbage" to other people. Just let listen to whatever they want and let them live their lives".

I guess what I'm trying to say is that saying other music is "garbage", besides the music you like, is immature

Devin Townsend makes me optimistic for music at least.

I did Krav Maga with his guitarist, pretty cool guy too.

Anyway not counting international music, the 2000s gave me Esperanza Spalding, Janelle Monae and Sara Bareilles. I hear nothing wrong with this era of sound. *shrug*

why do people keep using this as an argument? there were tons of songs similar to that beyonce song in the 60s and 70s (as shown by that picture on page 2) and there are tons of songs today with good lyrics.

Worst thing about that image is that those are not even the entire lyrics of Beyonce's song, they left A LOT out.. I mean, I prefer Queen by a long shot, but I cringe everytime I see this image.

If you think music is crap these days you are not looking hard enough. That kind of mentality is so bloody short sighted.

The majority of people think that 90% of music released is shit, whatever generation your from; whatever walk of life. Seriously, how blind do you have to be to not realise by now that every generation thinks the previous generation's music is crap? Genres and scenes spring up as a reaction to other scenes and it's been going on for hundreds of bloody years throughout Art History: the Romantic movement was a reaction to the rigidity of the Classical period, Hard Rock came out of a distaste for the hippy jamming mentality, punk rock was a reaction against the Prog movement and disco, Britpop was a reaction to the domination of grunge etc.

Forget radio, TV or the internet, there are plenty of incredibly talented people out there plugging away on your very doorstep. How many people that complain "music is crap these days" actually go out to gigs and support people/bands in your area? Once you wade through the aforementioned 90% of shit, you'll find it's where the most interesting stuff is happening.

If after that you still think music today is shit, pick up an instrument or fire up your computer and prove you know what you're talking about by fucking making some that isn't.

He's really talking about today's pop music, and, by most available metrics, pop music's relevancy is about as low as it's been in the recorded music era.

Thankfully, we have the internet, which has done a great job of breaking the grip of vapid, empty pop music on the public consciousness. There are a very large number of extremely creative musicians working today and they are, by definition, not working in pop.

you better not be talking shit about faith no more sonny

Rumor has it that there's new material in the works. Looking forward to that.

I've never seen INXS lumped in with Milli Vanilli in my life. I just can't wrap my head around that. Hutch was one of the most charismatic rock showmen ever.

You know what, shit. I was quite drunk when writing this and have no idea how INXS got spliced in there. I think I was going to write a list of good bands and a list of shitty bands, and when I deleted the good bands INXS got leftover. I love INXS, particularly The Swing era.
