Tokyo crew, Ghibli Museum?

Fellow Japan GAF people,

Everyone has that one thing they want to do at some point before a major occurs. Whether it's having 50 grandkids before they die, scaling Mt. Fuji before they leave Japan, or giving just one more sub-5/10 to another game that should never have been made in the first place...before being fired for giving too many sub-5/10 scores.

Well after having lived 1/23rd of my life in Japan I'm still a bit disappointed that I have never actually been to the Ghibli Museum in Tokyo. I'll be saying goodbye to Japan for good (or at least for another year or two) on August 8th. But before that I'm gonna head to Tokyo for a trip just short of 2 weeks (should be arriving July 26th or July 27th).

So I've decided to do it! I'm going to brave the mass crowds and fight the soccer moms at Lawsons on the ticket sales day to get my entry to the Ghibli Museum. Now while exploring by myself should be fun, hanging out with other cool cats while doing that exploring should be at least twice the fun!

That's why I'm wondering if there are any Tokyo GAF members who have an interest in Ghibli but have yet to take the time and go check out the Museum? It's cheap at only 1000yen a ticket and only takes up like 2 hours of your day. I'm thinking that maybe if there are several people interested we could do a GAF Jpn get together at the Ghibli Museum! Tickets for the August dates go on sale July 10th so there's still plenty of time to make some plans if people are interested.

So if you like Ghibli and you want to hang out with the crazy rambling rpg overlord Bebpo before he leaves Japan, reply to this thread!

Thought I left something out.

If you don't know what the Ghilbli Museum is here is a quick link about it:

http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/museum/

Basically it's a really cool bunch of exhibits based on the films by Studio Ghibli.

PS. How can you not desire to go when you could be taking pictures with you hugging this!

was just there a month ago. I absolutely loved it. It is amazing how much time and care was put into that place. you will love it.

How do you get tickets as a resident? I had to call a trvel agent in America and had no problems getting my first choice of a day. Are they much harder as a resident?

Not sure how difficult they are to get, but basically on the 10th of each month tickets for the following month go on sale at every convinience store across Japan. Since the museum has been open for a while I'd think it wouldn't be too bad. But then again this is the summer when kids are still on summer vacation.

I went there at the beginning of the year, it's quite interesting. Don't miss out on the special animation screening at the animation workshop!

Reminds me of the robot chicken future thing in Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

I bought the tickets just by going to Lawson and use those ticket machines thingy and went to the museum about 3 days after. Quite easy.

definitely walk. From the station you go alongside Mitaka park, which is really nice and peaceful. Plus you walk past Totoro's entrance (which you can't use, for Totoros only you understand)

sniff ;_;

And he would definitely recommend taking the train to Mitaka and WALK from there to the museum, since it's awesome. No bus, ya hear!?

That's exactly the way to do it.

I went a year or so ago and saw the new Totoro short. *sigh*

Amazing.

They're playing all of the Miyazaki features this month @ MOMA in NYC. I can't wait to see them all again on the big screen. :D

my friend and I tried walking there. it went very poorly. we took the bus. :(

Its easy to find. You come out of the station, down the steps, then follow the dust bunnies....

I'll go with you if you pay for a plane ticket for me to get over there. :D

So you're not going to go with JET for another year or two? Any particular reasons why? Was it the environment (I remember you saying it was cold and there was pretty much nothing to do locally), the job, or something else?

I'm still an alternate for this year's program. The wait to find out if I'm going or not sucks so bad, especially with the crappy job I currently have.

Totoro short?!

Yeah it was a brand new, exclusive to the museum short about the Cat Bus. You sorta see the transportation terminal where tons of huge Cat vehicles hang out. All the Totoros pop in at the end.

I don't mind admitting that the short was so fucking magical that I wept.

Yea I'm not doing another year with JET because I don't really enjoy living in the middle of nowhere with empty ghost towns and Alaska winters. I was thinking about moving to Tokyo after JET and looking for a job, but because of various factors here and at home I ended up deciding to ship home. Though I may still return in a couple of years and job hunt around the Tokyo area.
