Tokyo Xtreme Racer reboot has reignited my passion for racing games

Being a fan of the series, when Genki announced a new TXR I was very excited but also slightly worried they would have lost something after all those years away, as I'd been burned by so many reboots before. But nope, this game is the real deal. This is a proper TXR game but with a beautiful sheet of paint. It's the same Shuto Expressway, the same memorable bosses and challenge and progression. This is a Dreamcast/Playstation 2 game in all but graphics and it's all the better for it.

I've been so disappointed in racing games of late, especially from GT and Forza, and this is a real breathe of fresh air, with a pure back to basics career mode. Start from the bottom with a slow car, upgrade it as you slowly unlock parts and form a real bond with that car. This used to be the standard progression, because it worked. Now most racing games will throw cars at you left and right to keep your tiktok riddled brain engaged.

Some negatives for me are the stiff chase camera (similar to GT's) and the car sounds are definitely lacking for 2025, that's an aspect I wish they'd moved on from the PS2 glory days.

The game is still early access so only half the career available atm but it still took me a good 13 hours to complete. I started with the legendary AE86.

Then upgraded to a Turbo Silvia K's

There's even a mod to change the time of day and the game looks fantastic.

So yea check it out. It's 25 of your hard earned sterling and worth every penneth. Hopefully more people on Gaf will when it comes to consoles in the future.

GAME OF THE YEAR

I've had the game for 12 days and already have 84 hours on it. Having a ton of fun playing and have been completely engrossed in TXR the entire time.

Also got me doing YouTube more consistently again after a long time.

Can't wait to see where the game goes as development progresses.

Yeah but I am guessing you need a beast of a PC to check it out, shame they didn't decide to release a demo version like Horizon Chase Turbo did on consoles....

Not available in Canada wtf?

It's coming. There was a copyright issue that's being ironed out.

The sense of speed is much better with faster cars. Though the sense of speed in hood and bumper can is poor, has always been that way in genki games

I've used hood cam 99% of the time in this game. Sense of speed is good. You can increase the FOV to 110 degrees in bumper cam for a really good sense of speed.

Is the map the actual layout of Tokyo?

Glad to see this series return, we’re due a resurgence of Japanese arcade racers, I’m sick of the open world festival “arcade” racers the west has been serving up the past decade.

Yup, it's modeled after parts of the actual Shuto Expressway.

I'll wait for 1.0 release. Wishlisted.

For what it's worth, this game launched into Early Access in a better state than most finished games. Price is also going to increase for full release.

I feel like slight adjustments to the FOV and some added speed blur around the edges of the sceeen would fix these issues

Does it support a wheel and force feedback?
It does,
I play with a Thrustmaster TX Wheel and it works nicely.
Not on Forza or Assetto Corsa level, but it is still fun.

@Topic

I completely agree with OP.
It is awesome that Genki was able to recreate the same fun levels from 20 years ago.
Same game formula with updated physics and graphics.
If you loved past TXR games, you will love TXR 2025, too!

Love to hear there is a basic career mode. I stopped playing GT7 because the career mode is such checklist busywork bullshit. Is the bumper camera good for sense of speed? I use that in GT since that’s the only one where I feel like I am moving fast.

Can adjust the FOV up to 110 degrees for first person/bumper cam. I find the sense of speed to be good in that as well as the hood cam. Stock 86 isn't indicative of the game's sense of speed.

I never use chase cams but I'm not sure I'd use them in this game even if I did. The camera shake at high speed is wild. Hopefully they add an option to disable that because it'll put some people off.

It's a really strange decision to ignore the consoles. As far as I'm aware it's not only about the launch platform, they haven't announced any plans for future ports. PC market is known mostly for the passion towards sims, not arcade titles. I would understand this two generations ago, but these days with PCs and consoles being more and more similar it should be an easy decision.

I want this baaaaad. I finally tried night runners a few weeks ago and was disappointed. Then I found out about this same night!

I believe it's because they're on a limited budget. Bringing it to Steam is a good, and cheap, way to gauge interest in a title that has been absent for 18 years.

I'd imagine they'd bring it to console once the PC version is finished, pending its success, which is looking good.

The gameplay looks great, I'm interested. But what are the objectives? How do you progress? All I saw was free-driving through a great looking city

Yep it deserves to be on consoles too. I'm currently playing import tuner challenge as i missed this genki gem back in the day, and the customisation is insane. You can modify the interiors even. Change the seats steering wheel, add pressure gauges. Oh and it has a cockpit view in game. The motion blur is horrible though especially as it's stuck at 30fps!

Yeah, it's in really good state, but I've plenty of other games to play at the moment and I'll make sure to buy the game before 1.0 launch:messenger_relieved:

This was one of the few games in history to make me break a controller. If you built the wrong car you could literally be screwed in the Dreamcast games. I loved them but they could be very difficult at points.

Was playing Import Tuner Challenge leading up to the release of TXR. The motion blur and 30 FPS are both horrendous but I still played it for hours. That's how good these damn games are lol

Ugh I'd love to play this on PS5 tbh. I never played anything in this series; but for me it reminds me of Need For Speed: Underground. In the best way possible. I hope it releases on console when it leaves early access.

Speaking of racers and reboots; I wish we'd get a new Burnout racer too.

Dreamcast was an amazing racing console, dethroned only by Xbox a few years later. I am so looking forward to testing this. I just hope it'll be availble on consoles, preferably Xbox due to the better racing controller.

You can get it to fake 60 with lossless scaling but I was having trouble getting it working

From the little I played there's a lot of love in the game and it punches well above it's budget visually but it's just not that exciting. The highway setting basically makes it a drag racing game.

I’m loving my time with it. I only have one complaint that I hope they fix and that’s being able to choose a ramp from the map without having to go back to the garage. It seems really unnecessary but that’s the positive of it still being in early access

Eh there's lots of corners to master especially in c1. Only the southern stretch I'd consider a straight drag race. Highways aren't typically known for their tight hairpins

Thanks for putting this on my radar, it looks like my kind of game.

I'll add it to my Steam wishlist and get on it after I finish FFVII Remake.
