Tom Clancy Games Now Run On XBOX360 (Patch Recalled, Re-released)

Looks like I didn't get the update. Must have been pulled before I grabbed it. I don't remember seeing an update now that I think about it. Guess I'll have to wait.

The nice thing about doing full emulation (Even though it sounds like a bitch) is the future when Xbox 3 is out the Xbox games will still run flawlessly. If MS sticks with ATI hardware again it should make 360 compatibility easier and Xbox compatibility will work through emulation still.

I dunno...if MS sticks with ATI and Power PC for Xbox720, then yes, Xbox1 emulation should be good, but - since this emulator is for the Xbox360 architecture, ease of Xbox 1 emulaton next gen will depend on how compatible X720 is with X360.

Edit: Also, MS currently has to license something from Nvidia...I imagine that won't go away next time either, so that could be another stumbing block.

Someone test Fable The Lost Chapters after the update is out. I want to know if there are speed improvements. I've been waiting on picking it up until I hear it works near flawlessly on 360.

It would be great if MS had a "schedule" or something for BC...I know it would be impossible to have "release dates" for when a particular title is expected to work, but I would love to know what titles the team are focusing on and what the challenges are for games that haven't been emulated yet.

Sort of like The Guru or the MAME sites or other hobby emu sites keep a tally on what everyone's doing and what's still to be done.

If I knew, for example, that the SNK and Capcom 2D fighters were on the verge of being emulated I'd be a lot more positive towards the system...on the other hand, if I knew the team had these titles on the bottom of the priority list, I'd know not to get my hopes up.

Can someone who downloaded the December update pack before it was replaced upload it, please? I'd like to play some Splinter Cell! :D

That's a pretty big leap there in logic if you ask me.

The new update should be up again by tonight. Hopefully it won't be long.

I DLed the patch last night. I don't have any SC games.

Ninja Gaiden Black is almost as good as the Xbox version. There are still some graphical glitches, and it occassionally stops for a fraction of a second (pretty rarely), but the game speed is up to par, at least up until the end of level 2.

Freedom Fighters has been removed from the BC list. The game no longer loads.

The update has been removed from XBL due to Halo 2 compatibility problems.

360 backwards-compatibility update released, recalled
Update withdrawn due to Halo 2 problems, supports Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six.

When Microsoft first released the backwards-compatibility list for the Xbox 360, many gamers were shocked by some names that weren't on the list. Nowhere to be found were three of the top franchises for the original Xbox: Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, and Splinter Cell.

Late last night, Microsoft updated the backwards-compatibility list with eight games from the trio of Tom Clancy-inspired series. Software emulators for Ghost Recon, Ghost Recon 2, Ghost Recon 2 Summit Strike, Rainbow Six 3, Rainbow Six 3 Black Arrow, Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory all became available for download.

However, within hours of the new update's release, reports began to circulate that it was causing problems with Halo 2. Several GameSpot editors discovered when they inserted Halo 2 into their 360 consoles, a prompt appeared saying a software update was needed to play the game.

However, after the update was installed Halo 2 would only play in the standard 4x3 TV dimensions, not the 16x9 letterbox format used by high-definition televisions. Also, the game's graphics appeared compressed--a dramatic shift from its previously crisp, HD textures.

When contacted by GameSpot, Microsoft reps confirmed the problem and said the new backwards-compatibility update has, for the time being, been removed from both Xbox.com and Xbox Live. They also said that a new, Halo 2-compatible version would be available shortly.

when you say "way better"... do you mean it looks "way better" than it does on the Xbox 1? and if so, is it really that big of an improvement?

p.s. has anyone tried the Prince of Persia games? Especially the latest one, The Two Thrones? If they can just get these added by the time I procure an Xbox 360, all will be well!

P.P.S. Is Inside Drive 2004 supported by any chance?

I tried PoP: TTT and it's not supported.

So someone at Microsoft was actually like,

"Hey, let's release the new patch without testing Halo 2!"
and then someone else said
"Great idea!"

Mind boggling.

>>>someone will have to post their impressions of these titles running in 720p with AA<<<

They really need to stop calling it 720p with AA. Real 720p seems attainable considering it's software emulation and there's a large difference in GPU power between X and X360, but that's not what we're getting now.

agreed. From what I can tell, they're emulating the xbox and it's outputting a 480p image, which is then being upconverted using the internal scaler to 720p. That's not the same as having the system output a "true" 720p image. It definitely is clearer than standard xbox output though.

The fixed December update has been reposted to Xbox Live and Xbox.com. So you can grab it now. :)

Thanks for the info. Does that mean we have to expect a monthly update schedule?

There's no set schedule for updates I've heard of, it's more based on how soon the emulation programming and testing team can make any given set of titles work.

Arne, please tell me that ADX emulation is a priority and the games that use it - ranging from Street Fighter Anniversary to Metal Slug 3 to Panzer Dragoon Orta and many other Xbox games that originated in Japan - will be emulated sooner rather than later?

Understandably I don't have many specifics on what is or isn't being prioritized (i.e. I don't know where ADX work stands), but in talking with them I do know that the team in charge of doing all of this work are reading the boards and so on to see what titles they choose to work on next.

In that case, any idea what games the team are currently focused on?

Hey Microsoft, you guys want to know which game to support next?

JET SET RADIO FUTURE

So far so good, you've lifted my spirits regarding backwards compatability and I'm happy to see you guys taking it seriously. Hopefuly by April of '06 you'll have most of the popular games up and running.

I would like to say what I've heard floating around (and I'm sure the team would like to say on their own too), but I really want to avoid my serving of crow. :<

Why the need for secrecy at this point?

No secrecy as far as I can tell, just nobody wants to say something and then have me (or the board) go "where was JSRF/Panzer Dragoon Orta/OutRun/Riddick/Warriors/etc. in the last update??" I wouldn't like the feeling of seeing that you know? The team is still sticking to their goal, they're trying to make all the titles work.

GOOD GAWD

I'm playing R6:BA and the frame rate drops to 0 when a fire fight starts. All I hear is bullets and I'm stuck. How in the hell am I suppose to play a game when it feels like I'm playing in a laggy online game....OFFLINE! MS FIX YO SHIT.

I can understand that. A lot of hobbyist emu programmers work in secrecy to avoid fans pestering them.

Of course, it would be nice to have an idea as to what games have the priority at the moment.

I guess Microsoft should have tested every game extensively on the BC list for a feature is ancillary for most gamers, that can't possibly grow new gamers as there is currently a 360 shortage, wasting hundreds of man hours on top of the time spent patching. Yup a couple day turn around on a non critical game issue like widescreen to fullscreen display is certainly too much and deserves to be ridiculed, not praised for immediately dealing with a problem that the community brought to their attention.

I agree. I would rather have MS focus on getting more games working and leave the optimization for later. I think the best bet would be to let the actual 360 owners be the testers - have them report errors or bugs or generally slow emulation through xbox.com or Xbox Live, and let the programmers focus on getting as many games as possible running rather than throughly testing games for compatibility.
