Paris snubs Cruise
July 13, 2005

IT seems Hollywood star Tom Cruise's wacky behaviour is turning off more than his fans - whole cities are now declaring him persona non grata.
The Paris city hall has pledged "never to welcome" the actor to the city of love - all because of his membership of the Church of Scientology.

Cruise and film director J.J. Abrams have also been banned from filming upcoming action flick Mission: Impossible 3 in the Vatican.

In a debate late yesterday, Paris' Socialist-controlled municipal assembly approved a resolution "never to welcome Cruise, spokesman for Scientology and self-declared militant for this organisation".

Last month on a promotional tour for his film War of the Worlds, the 43-year-old star chose the Eiffel Tower to propose to girlfriend Katie Holmes. He was also made an honorary citizen of the southern French city of Marseille.

Like many other European governments, the French authorities view Scientology - founded in the US in 1954 by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard - as a dangerous cult.

Cruise was described as a "sect-symbol" by a Socialist deputy.

In Rome, Cruise and Abrams came up against a truly impossible mission: filming inside the Vatican city state.

Italian media reported the Vatican denied them access, so they had to recreate the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church in the southern Italian town of Caserta.

Meanwhile, Fox News in the US is reporting Cruise has more converts to add to his growing list of sign-ups - his own children with Nicole Kidman.

Isabella, 12, and Connor, 10, live with the 43-year-old actor in Beverly Hills where they are being home-schooled by his Scientologist sisters, reports say.

then Paris will be the first to go.

I want to applaud paris ....but this does seem like borderline discrimination.

Can someone justify this for paris so i can feel good about cruise being banned again?

Do a web browser search for "Lisa McPherson".

Man why can't the US government be this smart?

Freedom of speech

There are plenty of banned things in the US, ranging from obscenity to cults. There's nothing stopping our government from declaring scientology to be a dangerous and illegal cult (which it is).

If GAF raises enough money, I will go to the Scientology center here in Bellevue and become a member and report back here, for the twisted enjoyment of the forum.

Poor, poor Lisa..... OMG...... I saw those autopsy photos, so sad.

How can anyone seriously follow this shit. Cruise you crazy bastard! This shit is wrong...

How much would be needed?

The French vs Tom Cruise...Thats like asking GAF to choose between Herpes and Hemroids..

Bit I'll side with Cruise though(hemroids) he may be a pain in the ass right now, but like most flaky celeb phases he'll settle, where as the French(herpes) will randomly annoy for as long as you live--they aint goin no where.

Won't happen. You'll have to fork over a shitload of dough before they start letting you in on the truly whacky stuff.

I love how stupid religion is ruining the perception of this guy, 1 country at a time. I hope it fucks his career.

He should be banned from a lot of europe pretty soon.

Who hates him now, germany and france.

We can always hope that it gets branded a terrorist organization.

While I agree, how do you propose they even enforce such a thing given how many cults and organized crime syndicates that do exist?

Taking away their license to exist would be a good start. That would at least get rid of most of the members of the cult. Sure some would remain but it's the first step.

Oh please. There is more freedom of speech in the E.U. than there is in the U.S. Furthermore, this doesn't mean, of course, that Cruise can't go to Paris. It means they won't give him a hero's welcome.

Dayum...went from Lenny Kravitz to Scientology. I was going to hit it Nicole too. Not now though. I draw the line at cult chicks for recreational sex.

Yeah, he's not literally "banned" -- people really need to work on their reading skills (though what else is new?) That said, I heartily approve of this.

(I shamefully admit, by the way, that I'll probably see MI3. Sigh.)

For arguments sake let's say he was actually banned from Paris soil, it's not like the French would actually be able to stop him. Look at that track record! :lol

They can't even manage to stop Lance and they've been Lance proofing the tour for 3 consecutive years lol
