Tom Henderson heard from 2 sources (one at GDC) that Switch 2 devkits dont have 4K outputs

Let's be fr cause i'm an honest person. The series s has been clowned on for yearssssssss on here because of being underpowered but the switch 2 is going to launch with no 4k, no OLED, and ps4 tech inside of it for 400 dollars. Come on bro lol let's just be honest.
NOt the same.

Not even the same people are talking here that may have been talking about the Series S at some other time in some other place.

Switch was never going to render games close to 4k to a tv so lack of 4k output not going to have much if any impact on the experience.

For 65" for a 4k TV you should be around 6-8' away from your screen

Even if that's true, it is expected, maybe it can support 4K UI or upscale to 4K on 4K displays but I don't think most games will run anywhere near native 1080p, let alone reaching anywhere near 4K.

I think some peoples' expectations are above the clouds with the Switch 2, you'll get a base PS4 GPU with better CPU & some DLSS upscaling trickery, for a miraculous $400 I bet. (Very good price for the current economics situation we're in now).

I was expecting a 1080p LCD screen and 4k output docked (meaning mostly native 1440p upscaled to 4K). But who knows with Nintendo.

I just can't believe that someone can't tell the difference between 1080p and 4k. The difference is significant especially on a big tv or monitor. Yes you should sit a little bit away from the screen, but the difference is definitely their.

If you have say a 65" TV if you back up enough no one can tell the difference, I guess that is what he was implying

Good chart to go by from RTINGS

Wouldnt be surprised, its nintendo. Some people also expects VRR and HDR support too from them aswell. They are in for a rude awakening

Exactly. I didn't know so many failed algebra and basic physics. Or not taken an eye test.

The other point to be made is the change is gradual. A person might be getting some benefit from 4k but not the full benefit depending on tv size and where they sit. It isn't all or nothing no matter what.

Based Nintendo. 4K isn't big enough of a difference visually to crank your development times/budgets through the roof. Let Nintendo devs continue to make the most beautiful 1080p games imaginable.

I think a wise decision.

It's 2025. How can 4K not even be an option on switch 2? Base level PS4 is bad enough because the PS6 will be out in a couple of years

Is there any phone that can output 4k/60?
For strictly video games? No. For videography, easily.

OT: We'll see how true this is soon enough. Devkits are devkits, and don't represent consumer-spec. The final hardware could indeed be capable of 4K output in certain titles via upscaling.

Though, even if not, you're still getting a device that will be far and away more performant than the first Switch, docked or otherwise.

Sorry guys, I don't want to ignite any console wars but this is hilarious as fuck, some friends swore that it would do 4K60 :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The Switch 2 won't be competing with the PS6 nor next Xbox, though. It, just like the first Switch, is a completely different kind of console for a different kind of customer base.

My ROG Ally Z1E isn't a 4K capable device, despite it likely being more performant than the Switch 2. Ultimately, handhelds are vastly different machines than comparatively large consoles with significantly more cooling, larger chips, and are plugged into a wall 24/7.

It's Nintendo, they're like two generations behind when it comes to hardware.

How can you be surprised at this point?

Take an eye test at 40 feet instead of 20 and tell us the results.

In the same article though

It should be emphasized that the lack of 4K output on a dev kit doesn't automatically mean that the system won't support it. Console development kits don't often fully match the specs of the final system. For example, some dev kits could offer more memory to allow for better debugging and leave out features that don't impact testing too much like, in this instance, a 4K output.
This is exactly what I was thinking. Just cause it ain't on the dev kit doesn't mean it isn't on the machine. I have a feeling/hope this is the case but ya never know.

I'm still believing it will have 4k output in the dock but we will know very soon.

I think the combaters will go too hard on this. People will diss the system over this but imho it will turn out to be a nothingburger and it will be 4k output at the dock. If it isn't, I'll still get it, but not gonna lie it would be a tad disappointing. Honestly, I'll be shocked if it doesn't come with 4k.

My damage control on this will be "trust Nintendo, 4k will be there" I hope, lol. We'll know soon.

After living the steam deck life I just care about how it handles in undocked mode.

A lack of 4K in a console that is releasing in 2025 is nuts but only Nintendo can pull something like that off.

At the end of the day, mostly kids will be playing the switch 2 and they could care less about 4K, ray tracing or any "advance" features.

"Where we are going we don't need 4k's...."

Good...scale the output.

Also,

I would read this as "the switch 2 console does not support the HDMI 2.1 spec" I would NOT read this as "the switch 2 does not support 4k output of any kind"...the dock will do stuff.

Doesn't need to output 4k, but needs to not look/run like shit when playing on a 4K tv. Hopefully DLSS will do some magic here.

So it won't have 4k and will also have LESS memory??? fuck sake Nintendo.

Im trolling before anyone takes me seriously

I always expected this to output a 4k signal but never expected (most of) the games to run at 4k, even after upscaling. Most I was expecting was DLSS to 1440p then output as 4k to the TV. If it's 1080p again it's no great loss.

Really surprised how many people do not know this

It really kicked in on me when I looked at 8k TVs and when I back up to a normal distance no one in my group could tell a difference between the 8k and 4k TVs

Hahaha, and when I say $400+ for this things is nuts, people think I'm the delusional one.

Good old Nintendo, they never changed, and never will.
