Tom Henderson heard from 2 sources (one at GDC) that Switch 2 devkits dont have 4K outputs

Sounds concerning, but will wait to hear the official word. Tom Henderson is usually bang on the money as a source.

Maybe an older revision of the devkit and the newer SDK's do?

Switch 2 is using DLSS or Nintendo's own variant and has dedicated hardware on the board and not just an algorithm. They will have games targeting an upscaled 4k image output.

Take an eye test at 40 feet instead of 20 and tell us the results.

I don't need an eye test to see the difference between HD and 4K but maybe you need one if you can't see the difference.

Technically 1080p would be an upgrade, as I am pretty sure the Switch uses 'dynamic resolution' to display at '1080p' with 60 fps.

Well that sucks.
Not that I expected Switch to do actual 4K, but if it can hit 1080p then it could still look decent if upscaled to 1440p, specially if they have Nvidia tech.

If this has PS4 level power why would it output 4K.

If it has Ps4 level power and some Nvidia powered upscalling tech like DLSS why wouldn't they leave the option open to output at more than 1080P?

Not really, it just depends of the game. There are 1080p / 60 fps games, such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (just a few examples).

Is this where we find out Nvidia finally backstabbed Nintendo by not letting them use DLSS? They have to complete the trinity somehow.

No 4k? I will just wait for the emulators; My switch games run at 8k on my pc
Now we know why they wanted the emulators off the internet. It makes them look like a bunch of amateurs.

"Some guy was able to built that 8k on an emulator 5 years ago in a cave using a box of scraps"

Nintendo:
There's a level beyond 1920x1080?

Yeah it isn't that they didn't want their games given away for free or anything.

Holy copium in this thread.
That said, I don't think it's real, mostly because I don't believe Nintendo is THAT stupid.

Search your heart.

You know already it's true.
If this is true and I really hope it isn't that means that they expect us to go another 4-9 years with a system at 1080p again!? I can't believe they are that short sided. I mean this is Nintendo so maybe they plan a 3-4 revision with 1440p or 4k but it will be a major letdown and PR shitstorm if this thing is 1080p docked again!

3 teraflops docked is more than two times as powerfull as a Ps4 only looking at numbers, aside from the fact that comparing Nvidia and Amd "flops" does not make much sense anyway....

I could really do 1080 forever myself. I kind of like seeing actual pixels. It's just when they put all kinds of post processing making look all smeary is when it's crap.

But idk why you guys are expecting ps5 levels out of this tiny handheld device. You'll be lucky to see 1440 which will be fine.

I don't really know how this tech works, but I've been expecting it to output at most 1440p. And that would be absolutely okay to me as that's what I play almost every game at on my PS5 and 4K OLED TV. Only 1080p will be somewhat disappointing, but I can manage if it means that more games get 60fps. It'll be interesting to finally get to see what it'll be capable of.

I'm not expecting 4K output from Switch 2. I've been kind of thinking 1080p, just with better frame rates and hopefully some anti-aliasing. Nintendo is allergic to anti-aliasing, though.

No one with a brain expected 4K rendering, but pretty much everyone expected some kind of 4K upscaling, be it DLSS or quasi-mCable style functionality built into the dock

Well I have good news for you. You'll get to buy an OLED Switch 2 in 4 years time, god's year 2029,
with a 1080P screen

Having tested it myself, it is not. At least, not in any realistic capacity without an eGPU. You're not getting native 4K out of an Ally.
We aren't talking about 4K native though, this is saying that the switch 2 may not be able to output 4K at all if the dev kits are representative of the final product.
I am sure there are games that the Rog Ally z1e could run at 4k FSR balanced - especially switch 1 level games.
