Tom Warren: I've heard from insiders that [Microsoft's own handheld] it's essentially canceled as the company focuses on Xbox's new software platform

Given that Microsoft has that whole "This is an Xbox" campaign thingy going on, I can certainly believe that they will now be working with third parties, instead of making their own hardware.

Next Xbox will simply be Windows PCs, that boot into an Xbox dashboard.

MS should really abandon HW and focus on Xbox as a PC gaming platform, so essentially a competitor or adjacent to Steam.

If there really had sense, they would fully embrace Apple and look to provide a storefront and translation layer for Apple Mac development. If MS pulled theor considerable clout behind Apple, then they could become the dominant gaming platform on Mac with no meaningful competition from Steam. That would also drive considerable Mac sales as the platform would now be opened up as a serious gaming platform.

Xbox at least has some market share against PS. No one buys games on the Windows Store, and publishers often do Xbox console/Steam releases while excluding Xbox PC.

NOOOOOO.. we need competition...

PS6 will now be $999 and you can't do anything about it
Playstation is as dead as Xbox only people are buying it. There hasn't been shit this gen on the PS5 and it isn't going to get any better. The days of consoles is about over. There sure as hell won't be anymore physical media after this gen. Microsoft owns a good share of the IPs that people will be buying on their PlayStation, there is no incentive for them to make a box anymore.

I can't believe there are still fanboys like its 2005. Nobodys consoles are cutting edge anymore, just a bunch of off the shelf underpowered PC parts and don't get me started on how trash the games are anymore especially the exclusive scene. It's NOTHING like it used to be as its just going to get worse.

C'mon man, make it less obvious

PS : in before "you're a fanboy"

PS2 : 2018 account with 30-something posts, and people wonder why we're talking about alt-accounts and astroturfers in here...

What's the point? The PS5 is a PC with a locked ecosystem.

Like I and many others have been saying, the era of traditional Xbox consoles is over.

From here on out it's ASUS PC "console" boxes with Xbox stickers on them. MS is done with the hardware business.

Agreed playstation is a dead as Xbox, here's the proof

Redswirl and Josephfantazy in shambles right now FRFR TBH AFAIK

Guess PunishedMiku didn't read the leaked emails and internal memos. Because from those, we know at least early on, MS's intent in buying Zenimax & even ABK was foreclosure on PlayStation of critical big 3P games.

They only pivoted from that once Satya & Smith (and other non-Xbox folks at MS) saw that ABK price tag and said "Now wait a damn minute, Phil!"

It's not going to be a traditional console tho, that's for sure. Makes zero business sense anymore for Microsoft.

It'll be a "console", as in a PC with a SFF/NUC console-style form factor, running a custom version of Windows with a more streamlined version of what's coming in the ROG Xbox Ally, and probably using some mix of emulation/translation layer/recompile for extensive Xbox BC support.

And it's probably gonna cost $150 - $200 more than a PS6 for PS6-equivalent performance. But at least it'll be upgradable, unlike a PS6.
If hardly anyone bought the current Xbox (even at fire sale prices), who will be buying this thing? I fully expect this will also be cancelled internally, if it hasn't been already.

And its game lineup is complete trash. Nobody said it wasn't selling but its dead for what a Sony system used to represent.

Awesome sales #'s though. I am sure they benefit you and are really fun to play. The worst thing is that they are making money hand over fist. They have no incentive to do anything different than they are doing now. Now go back to being a good little soldier and keep buying remasters of a remaster of a remaster or the next COD game. You will keep buying once they take physical awsy too just like you paid to play online when it was so bad Microsoft was doing it etc.. The Ponies always have an excuse to keep being milked.

lol Jesus get help. This is supposed to be a fun hobby. Who cares if people enjoy remasters and cod. You aren't better than anyone just cause you don't play COD.

I stepped away from Sony because buying overpriced consoles to play overpriced last-generation remasters wasn't something I'm interested in. I actually enjoy Xbox's multi-device / multi-platform approach, and their content appeals to me more. I'd like them to stick around for a while longer, yet. I'll gladly move away from my Xbox consoles for their Xbox PC Hybrids if:
  1. Windows gets a dedicated gaming mode that provides the same kind of performance improvements that the Xbox consoles deliver for their hardware.
  2. Microsoft brings proper Xbox emulation to Windows so my decades of purchases remain alive and available.
If they don't deliver either of the above, then frankly, what's the fucking point?

The article that started this thread is actually pointing out something important.

Basically Microsoft had two paths to go for the Xbox handheld. Either continue with the Xbox console hardware but in a handheld, OR just have a PC with Xbox PC ports.

And the news is that Microsoft is abandoning the Xbox hardware version, thus making backwards compatibility MUCH harder. If not abandoned all together. It seems the news now is that Play Anywhere games are how Xbox games would survive now (especially after the recent showcase). And that unless a decent emulator is made the Xbox games that aren't play anywhere will not survive the transition.

It is not a surprise all things considered, as it is the cheapest option. But it is also not what Xbox customers want to hear.

If I can buy a machine that runs Xbox games and steam games, without dropping a couple thousand on a brand new PC, I would be there in a heart beat.

I don't need a dedicated Xbox console.

Now say it without crying.

Just makes sense. If they do plan on moving the Xbox brand to PC, they need to be focused on making Windows the best place to play. Releasing a machine in 2027 that focuses on playing your 2020 machine's games doesn't seem like it would have much market potential.

Watched the Skill Up video on it. Kind of lost in all the negativity around here of course but he sounded pretty impressed with the actual hardware and the software. He pretty much acted like it surpassed Steam Deck easily in terms of power and wider variety of available PC games. Said it needs more testing and voiced some concerns about the battery life.

Really the main drawbacks for me would be the price point and just needing much more transparency about the full scope of their forward compatability plans.

Xbox are done making console hardware

Xbox as a console platform is so fucking dead
That's silly. They should still put out some cheap hardware. They have 10 million plus GamePass subs on a console. Maybe they contract that out too like the PC handheld, but it still makes sense to have something available even if it is just XSX Pro - level next gen something.

You don't throw away millions of customers just because you aren't the top of a particular market. This is like sitting down in the middle of a race because someone passed you. It is shitty and pathetic and financially irresponsible.

The original statement said they were still investing heavily (quote) in the native handheld, but that they had changed focus to developing Windows for gaming. I thought it sounded like they tried to dispel ideas of waiting for that handheld to be ready, and have people focus on the Asus handheld - for now.

This is my dream machine. To be able to play my console library and allow me to use other store fronts. Here is to hoping they can make it happen.

Nah it's just a normal console.

Whatever you say, guy who is definitely not some previously banned poster's alt.

I'm not a big xbox fan but i still don't want the downfall of the brand to happen 'like some of the comments on here want to happen'. Xbox being around keeps sony in check and i like having a third option for home console gaming in the marketplace. They really fucked themselves though by going all in on gamepass and i really wish they'd get rid of it and go back to having exclusives and selling physical games.

This kinda sucks for me. I have loved Xbox since 2008 and have stuck with them as my main console up to date. I've never had a problem with PlayStation I originally just wanted halo then slowly got invested into the ecosystem. I had a PS1 and PS2 before that. I love Nintendo and will always have whatever they put out.

It's obvious I'm going to have to change over to something new. It gotta be a PC right? Plays Gamepass, steam, PlayStation games (I don't care to wait) etc. Not sure how much I'd be missing out with console only games. I'm not going to buy both but buying into PlayStation at this point seems like the wrong direction for me

They should've been focusing on this "new" software platform back when Windows 8 was a thing. The entire pitch back then was to have their one OS span across multiple device types, and adjust to their form-factor. Never really happened, Windows only bloated more background resources, their first stab at a game mode seemed to somehow worsen game performance than having it off in titles. They never implemented stuff that Valve could figure out with their first stab at a handheld by having you press a button to go into a sleep mode that takes less power, and saves your game state.

It appears like they're FINALLY doing something, I just don't get why it took so long to do a thing people would've wanted years ago.

If you're just Game Passing it then you may as well keep riding it til the wheels fall off.

Steam might have a better option in future to go up against PC/Windows.

Yup and I feel bad for the individuals who invested in Microsoft's platform. They can get ready to pay out the ass for 3rd party systems because almost all of them aren't going to be focused on affordably, the RoG Xbox handhelds included.

Well it was coming....fk Sony lost its main direct competitor in the market. I know Microsoft has been shriveling up as a real competitor since the 360 days but even in the xbox one era it had an impact. This is going to be terrible for the market and consumers, sadly outside the jokes and banter.
