Tom Warren: I've heard from insiders that [Microsoft's own handheld] it's essentially canceled as the company focuses on Xbox's new software platform

The day I can play all my Xbox backwards compatible shit on the PC and get rid of the Series X will be a happy day indeed.
You really think they will do that? I doubt it as they don't give a shit about BC. They only did it to curry fan favor until their acquisition crap was done, then they ended all bc flat.

They delist games all the time. I got a series x in 2023, first xbox console, mom got it from getting verizion and gave me the console.
I had to buy splinter cell, skate 2, mortal kombat 9, Bad company 1 and 2, pandora tomorrow, silent hill downpour and a bunch more on disc as they were no longer on the store as they were "delisted".
Then they say they aren't adding anymore bc games, done...
They just didn't want to pay for new licensing terms.

Those games and many more will not be playable (yeah i have some on pc already) but others are not on pc.
So many times I would go to a store and look at older xbox og and 360 games only to realize they don't work on series x.

my concern is they are going to drop support for series x and we won't be able to play older games when they take the server down.

Was the thread title originally different? Replies seem weird considering this is saying the handheld is canceled which I thought we knew already.

Yeah....the og title is the first line of my post....

The Verge sources tell Tom Warren Xbox is essentialy cancelling Xbox and focusing on Software

Where is this said?

Edit:

Bro.....how do we go from that to...

And I'll never not laugh at that attachable keyboard that feels like a piece of cardboard. lol
They do make regular laptops as well. That's what my company gave me. It feels great as far as quality all metal basically. Seems impossible to repair any hardware related issues though. I'd never buy one for myself but as a company issued laptop it's probably the nicest once I've ever had.

I always tell people to go with Dell though their support is just to good. I call those guys and get them to come on site and do the repair themselves while I just watch youtube.

Yeah.....Surface is great if your company is paying for them.

So....that was exciting.

I do want to point out that PC and console audiences are not apples to apples. What sells amazingly well on one may flop on the other. What flies on one may not fly on the other. MS should be aware of this going forward. Living in denial of this basic truth could cost them bigtime. The audience will never be unified because it is not the same audience.

The audience crossover between console & PC Game Pass, or especially console & Steam, is massive. It's not 2005 anymore, where that sentiment of them being heavily divergent still held some weight (tho even then, it was starting to converge).

And it's definitely not like back in the '90s or '80s, where yeah for the big and most mid-sized games, console & PC gaming tastes were wildly different.

The funny thing is that they have two great things they can do....and there are some signs they're doing that.

1. Go completely 3rd party and embrace it. Call the publisher Xbox Publishing and eliminate any and all hardware.
2. Make a completely game focused version of windows. no bloat. No ads. No telemetry. I'd even pay a subscription for it. They could offer a tier that has gamepass added in. That MIGHT move the needle.

The Xbox team better play a good game to get that type of leverage over the Windows team, then.

I would hate to be a primary Xbox gamer at this point. That digital library is cooked and is on an inevitable crash course.

Once Xbox stops making official hardware (due to dead sales) what happens to all of those digital libraries...where do they go for console only gamers?

That's still the question but in the meantime, we can enjoys gems like this:

I have nearly 3000 hours in Forza Horizon 4 and 5 combined. I turned off my billing for gamepass, I've had it running nearly half a decade. I feel real bumped by this approach they are taking.

TBF, that poster's reevaluating some of their gaming choices so there's that.

Nextbox is Cloud and PC...
Gamepass is now XBOX
They will become the most powerful Third Party company going forward.

Well good luck, they'll need it against Take-Two, Epic, and Tencent.

And whoever publishes Roblox.

now "xbox is windows and windows is Xbox" omfsatan
if xbox is windows so ''xbox'' is gone, it's an Xino now.

I haven't owned an Xbox console for 8 years now 😧

Yet I've played nearly every first party Xbox game in the last 8 years 😄

But I've only paid microsoft less than the cost of a single AAA game (£60)

What the fuck are Microsoft/Phill doing 😫

That's fair but I read that Stellar Blade sold so well on PC and not PS5 because PC has a higher ratio of gooners and the modding site is all goon. Was I lied to?

Don't forget streaming games. Ms loves to claim you can play games places without ever mentioning they mean xCloud.

They live to gaslight.

"Play Xbox games on this system" when they could say "play the PC version of play anywhere titles or stream them."

It's not even in the fine print of their marketing BS.

What is the sales pitch for the next Xbox console? Seriously.

It's the easiest fucking thing in the world TBH. Buy this XBOX hardware that is also a PC that can launch Steam, Epic, etc. and function as a full PC. By the way, you don't have to wait 7 years for a new one as we'll have 3rd parties making XBOX enabled hardware. I imagine there will be baseline expectations to get the XBOX label, kind of like a G-SYNC monitor that has to meet certain minimums to be considered G-Sync.

Yes and I imagine once the casual user hears PC they'll say no thank you and go buy something else. Will be interesting to see how the community enjoys MP games that are just filled with hackers now. Rainbow Six was a mess on PC I had to stop playing it.

They are just PCs running the PC version of games. You don't ever have to wait 7 years for a new PC.

All you are talking about is the sales pitch for PC gaming. MS slightly improving the Windows gaming experience could be a fine thing to talk about without all this obfuscation of calling them "Xbox."

That's a PC.

There isn't going to be some dumbass hybrid system.

Multi vendor hardware is a bad idea IMO.

In past gens every once in a while you hear about this strategy. Steam Machines, 3DO, maybe some others. Never succeeds even close.

I understand the concept. Get various makers to make it for cost savings and let them go through the hassles of hardware. But for consoles, I dont see it being a success as gamers want a console from a main maker. Not sub-contracted out with another label. Getting other people to make it will also lead to big price jumps as those companies want to make money off it from the first unit made unless MS wants to subsidize them on every sale.

HORRIBLE idea! And we know MS will NEVER subsidize these "3rd party hardware" consoles.

Did the thread title get changed? Replies are weird. Especially that there's ROG Ally they just announced

Anyways, it's only a matter of time until Xbox goes fully third party.

MS should really abandon HW and focus on Xbox as a PC gaming platform, so essentially a competitor or adjacent to Steam.

If there really had sense, they would fully embrace Apple and look to provide a storefront and translation layer for Apple Mac development. If MS pulled theor considerable clout behind Apple, then they could become the dominant gaming platform on Mac with no meaningful competition from Steam. That would also drive considerable Mac sales as the platform would now be opened up as a serious gaming platform.

As a PC Gamer I hate all of this because what this really implies is a push for more Windows Store games.

They want PC Gamers to use this new game mode of Windows to be driven to their Windows Store branded as Xbox.

It will support Steam and all that but it's unlikely the integration will equal that of buying from MS's store.

I guarantee you internal meeting are about taking over PC Gaming while avoiding the ire of regulators.

Thankfully Valve have been forward thinking enough to prepare for this day.

Why develop your own hardware when you can put an xbox sticker over existing hardware produced by other companies and pretend it to be 'your new console'? :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy:

It's not going to be a traditional console tho, that's for sure. Makes zero business sense anymore for Microsoft.

It'll be a "console", as in a PC with a SFF/NUC console-style form factor, running a custom version of Windows with a more streamlined version of what's coming in the ROG Xbox Ally, and probably using some mix of emulation/translation layer/recompile for extensive Xbox BC support.

And it's probably gonna cost $150 - $200 more than a PS6 for PS6-equivalent performance. But at least it'll be upgradable, unlike a PS6.
I'll go one further with, it was already leaked during the Activision acquisition and it is most definitely a PC they are working on.

I suspect the handhelds and consoles PC's are being built in parallel to find which wins out as it makes zero sense to release both.

Asus won against MS for the handheld, let's wait and see who takes the crown for PC.

If the handheld is a test, prepare to fail it 😂

The tiny handheld market is already dominated by steam deck and you aren't convincing the average joe to spend $1000 on your ROG Xbox Ally

Like what the fuck are we doing here?

Can't wait for them to cancel their next console. This downfall of Xbox needs to be studied, it's fascinating. How these people never lost their jobs, I'll never understand.

What exactly has Aaron Greenberg been doing all these years??

I wish Apple would actually make a major push into supporting games on the Mac and just take these bozos out of the picture entirely. I dream of a world without Windows.
