This isn't as simple as you think because of how windows works. On top of that MS would hate for that version of windows to start showing signs of performing better not just in games but just in general use. This could lead to not only gamers using it but everyone and MS would lose their minds if that happened.

Except Sega were having a great year in 2000, they were churning out banger after banger. These weren't games from acquired studios, these were distinctly Sega games. When they announced they were exiting the market in 2001 it came as such a gut punch.

Microsoft on the other hand have basically been limping along for a decade, their acquisitions coinciding with console sales falling flat, so none of this comes as a shock.

As for why Microsoft won't do the honorable thing like Sega, Microsoft want all their Xbox console customers to come over to PC and carry on buying games from their store, they want this to be a slow drawn out process. If they just announce it like Sega then they risk losing millions of potential Xbox PC customers to PlayStation.

It's going to be a very interesting scene if Xbox canned their handheld plans, and it's only gonna be the Portable PS6 vs Switch 2 in the locked console ecosystem space + the Steam Deck 2 and all these other ripoffs like the Rog Ally, Lenovo Legion etc in the open PC Handheld space.

They still aren't the biggest publisher even with Zenimax & ABK. Pretty sure GTA6 is going to sell more units & generate more revenue than all MS Gaming software releases the past 3 years combined, in just its first six months.

By that logic, Take-Two are still the largest publisher around. But the whole "largest publisher" moniker has always been wonky. If going by amount of sheer IP owned for example, there's a good chance the "largest publisher" is SEGA 🤷‍♂️

Appreciate that. Microsoft is hard to figure out. One minute they say they are releasing another console and the next they act like they are trying to figure out their exit strategy.

I know this much. We shouldn't be putting much if any faith in what Microsoft says. Only what they do.

I was told that the difference between these Asus-type handhelds and the now-"essentially cancelled" MS version would be that the MS version would allow Xbox games to be run natively, whereas the Asus version can't (unless they're Play Anywhere). Sounds like that hope is dead. Handheld buyers will be stuck with those limitations.

Smells like Valve's strategy and the consumer friendliness and trust people have in Valve cannot be competed against by Microsoft. Hope they have a different strategy.

If they don't provide solution they are not dumb to just shut down all your games, they will face huge penalty's if they are sued & they will be sued.
A lost of lawyer's will try to get rich from that dumb decision.

I think he could be referring to statements made by people who were at the XBOX Showcase presentation.

People from Easy Allies and others (Greg Miller) not only indicate new hardware is in the works, but it would also be more of a traditional console than people think...

Not sure who that is. No doubt there is a lot of talk among about this stuff among various people, but nothing official has been said about hardware next year. We know Sarah Bond and Phil Spencer have stated publicly that a new console is coming. Just not when.

I agree it's the most likely scenario, but Microsoft has positioned itself so they can follow through on that plan or maintain a presence in hardware if by some miracle Xbox mounts a turnaround (or Nintendo and Sony screw up colossally). The point is their decisions have an outcome in any case, no matter what was planned.
 
Can someone tell me what the OEMs supposedly get out of this? The entire gaming business model is based on making your money back on software…is asus getting a cut of what is sold via steam or the Xbox store?

How does this work financially for the OEMs?
 
I expect the next Xbox to just be a glorified PC hardware box and be treated like a gamepass/Xbox os machine with open source apps and certain xbox software for their cloud and backward preservation services. There is no value of getting this personally when I have everything enough on my PC, they are pretty much a software OS service now, and as all of us are saying, they just go full publisher third party moving forward.

PS6 and Switch 2 combo is the best way forward on the console front with the future. If you have a decent PC you shouldn't waste your money on a locked down PC SKU unit. That's my current feelings anyhow with common sense on the wall.

Let the game devs that side go all out bringing their games to everyone than being messed about by Microsoft.

huh? they sell $120 worth of parts for $600 $700. if its xbox themed they probably get windows oem for free or something.

Well was Greg Miller, It's been discussed in the official Xbox thread on Era...

Many rumors and comments from all quarters about MS's plans for the next Xbox hardware... we can only wait.
 
Funny how we are back to the original Xbox plan.

This handheld has probably been dead for awhile. Who wants a closed off Xbox handheld at this point?

The same way Asus makes money on laptops, monitors, handhelds, whatever. They sell hardware for a profit.

I have hated Surface with a passion since the time when you only had soldered SSDs, as you had to literally shred entire system if there was something wrong with an SSD or you had a data spill.

Those things have been mostly not repairable during initial generations. And explaining to execs that we have to shred $2-3K laptops and this is why we recommended not to go with the Surface was lots of "fun".

Anyway, that's my Surface Rant for the day! 😅

I've priced out laptops and tablets probably a few dozen times and every time I put the price and specs next to the competition, Surface loses. Surface is fine as a business laptop as long as the business is paying for it. And I'll never not laugh at that attachable keyboard that feels like a piece of cardboard. lol
