Assigning a CFO to run operations at a game publishing company is not a good sign for creativity in the near future.

Those id Software guys were on the right track to unionize before this guy took over.

Not the changes that need to be made.
It's the easiest and fastest change they can make - it's also necessary. If they're going to release games that don't make money, Microsoft needs to make cuts to balance things.

$67 Billion dollars. That's the Sword of Damocles hanging over all of ABK and Zenimax right now.

CoD has also been coasting forever with no competition in the military space. Having said that, since the release of Warzone 5 years ago, yearly CoD games has made 0 sense.

CFO = penny pincher, and this move affects Zenimax directly, hope they know wtf they're doing at MS, because "cuts" can't be the only response for everything

Plenty of people respectfully warned the Xbox acquisition cheerleaders that Microsoft -- quite literally the richest company in the history of humanity -- would infect the creativity at any and all companies they acquired because they (Microsoft) are not a charity. A large audience of ignorers -- mostly on Reeeeeeeee -- chose to mislabel valid concerns as "anti-consumer" and "Pro-exclusion".

Those same chirpers are quiet as fuck now. CFO's running anything creative is how you get to a bunch of cancellations, layoffs, GaaS's with zero identity, studio closures, marketing that makes zero sense, price hikes, etc. It's going to get worse for Xbox, count on it.

I didn't see any problem with the "organized fan group" supporting the acquisition.

What was disgusting was the moderators of Reeeee, for example, banning anyone who said "I don't know, it could get worse" with the acquisition.

And also the Astroturfing

Because English isn't my first language, in case you haven't noticed.

And schadenfreude sums up everything I've said.

No, it doesn't really sum up the part you not so vaguely said xbox fans deserve to die in that many words :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I was about to post with the 'ow the edge' meme but you edited all of that out, lol

Now that I think about it, if those fan groups were a bunch of Microsoft astroturfers then it makes a lot more sense.

Don't worry, soon they will replace them with Copilot, it couldn't do a worse job could it?

These changes seem pretty nothing berger. Keep things the same or worse? could it get worse for them?

Instructions unclear. Replaced entire Bethesda division with Copilot Gaming Mode.

Doubt these will be the last adjustments they make to the leadership team at corporate and at their studios.

If the absolutely giant AI abyss gushing money doesn't dry up soon and MAKE money MS will be brutal in their actions to "right the ship".

All of this crap is Phil's fault.

For decades MSFT basically ignored Xbox as nothing more than a balance sheet footnote.

Top level probably didn't even "see it" since the whole division would have been rolled into a "consumer and electronics" subdivision etc, or some such.

Then Phil decided he wanted to be billy big bollocks, and initiate a gigantic fucking acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Now you have the entire Group management team engaged, batting anti trust regulatory concerns to get the deal over the line and a ton more scrutiny on a business they find interesting but generally don't understand (but think they do; textbook management Dunning Kruger).

Now the Group is setting division level goals because reporting visibility is now completely crystal, as it needs to align to M&A portfolio visibility as the Group CFO seeks to make a long term return on the investment, turn the balance sheet asset value upwards and thus make themselves look good to public investors on their earnings calls.

Hence the "Xbox! You lot better get in line with all this AI bullshit! We think your business is too expensive and McKinsey have told us how much we can save from shoehorning AI all over your operations, from that $42.4 report we paid for, that may or may not have been generated on their side by ChatGPT, I'm not sure…"

Hence the "we're not seeing enough commercial focus in driving wider operating margins across these businesses. I don't understand why you can't just fucking slash your cost base by 30% to solve that, and… what? … wait what do you mean that next years sales forecasts are being halved because you now forecast a ~60-70% Metacritic as you no longer have the dev talent and capacity to ship at quality to guarantee a strong product and long tail..? What's a Metacritic? You're using silly words I don't understand, nor care about.. I have no time for managers that just make excuses. I'm just going to bring in a new studio manager and CEO for you from MSFT. Where's that CFO who killed three divisional business lines across MSFT over the last few years and continues to fail upwards? Oh and Doug's intern? They'll do…"

This will probably be like turning your mattress from the summer to the winter side.
The only one feeling the difference will be the mattress itself.

After Phil proving working for Microsoft for 35 years was the best to handle Xbox, they put someone working there for 12 years to make sure his legacy will live
