Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered Includes Racial and Ethnic Stereotypes Warning From Crystal Dynamics

I wonder of I'll even notice these "offensive depictions of people and cultures rooted in racial and ethnic prejudices".

I Dont Think So No Way GIF

Also, if it was so "inexcusable" and doesn't "align with your values" you wouldn't be trying to profit off it.

How sensitive is society going to allow people to get before it becomes a problem??

Soon all eating devices will be replaced by sporks so people don't hurt themselves or people will have to wear helmets just to walk outside. Shit, it seems like the people making these decisions are already wearing helmets.

Aggressive/hypocritical message irrespectful of the fact that these games are what created the Tomb Raider brand and turned it into a success that is giving them a job.
They could have just stated that these games are a product of their time.

"Rather than removing this content, we have chosen to present it here in its original form, unaltered, in the hopes that we may get away with it and earn from it with the least effort possible"

Fixed it for them.

Well its better than straight removing the content so, good on them. Saying that i dont remember any problems with racial or stereotypes stuff when i played these games. But back then the world was not made of snowflakes.

Several remasters from older games have done this. Can't openly offend these modern snowflakes that are offended at every single thing that doesn't acquiesce to them and their feelings....🙄

This is peak hypocrisy. So they are profiting from a game that was developed by other people while shitting on them and their work.

What a bunch of vile morons. Looking forward to the failure of their next project and further studio shutdown.

It's a damn shame that such an iconic video game remaster it's stained with such childish nonsense.
Blame resetera, kotaku and the like? They (seemingly) get off on complaining about stuff like that...yes, even if it's from damn near 20 years ago.

To be fair, I will gladly take this over actually altering/removing content from the games. It's just a screen of text. So thank you for not changing content.

Crystal Dynamics has added a content warning to Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered flagging what it described as racial and ethnic stereotypes.

Here is the message in full:

I will find a way to mod this shit out on the PC release. Those revisionist crybaby cucks ruin everything now.

Edit - Oh and fuck Crystal Dynamics and thank you Aspyr. Btw, if the next Tomb Raider is a fucking LGBTQIA+ POC/BIPOC/Latinx cluster fuck fest and betrays the Tomb Raider Legacy any further I won't be touching the garbage. Stick to your legacy you ass hats.

"Rather than removing this content, we have chosen to present it here in its original form, unaltered, in the hopes that we may profit off of its harmful impact and learn from it."

WARNING: This NeoGAF post contains words which are made up of letters from the English alphabet. English is a language that many people speak, including harmful, dangerous, racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, transphobic, and otherwise "literally ain't even it, chief" people. In addition, this language contains LOTS of scary and dangerous words that are deeply troubling and offensive. It is recommended that all people who don't like hatred and villainy STOP reading this post immediately and retreat to your nearest Amazon® or Microsoft® sponsored inclusionary safe-space or non-yikes friendo forum.

Rather than edit this post, we/them have decided to retain its original content in its purest form so that future generations may observe and learn from its hateful and evil nature. We/them are deeply and truly sorry, and will strive to do better in future posts.

The content of the post is as follows:

haha that's dumb CD is stupid

Who gives a shit about a 5 second black screen? Are ya'll really that fragile?

Bunch of crybabies up in here.

Throw up a little black screen saying they don't condone certain other idgeeologies. And we'll see who the cry babies really are.

This little black screen applies that there's something wrong with the material. There isn't.

Incoming PETA warning.
Did you see where someone changed all creatures to robots in the modded RTX Remix version someone is working on? It looks stupid.

The wolves a little after the 3 minute mark are red metallic robot creatures. I don't care if the guy just thinks they look cool, has no talent to update the look of the animals, or if he is a PETA lover, it's plain ridiculous looking.

"Rather than removing this content, we have chosen to present it here in its original form, unaltered, in the hopes that we may profit off of its harmful impact and learn from it."
This is why I don't mind the placard at all. They're warning the safe-spacers to stay away if they don't want their eyeballs bleeding.

At least they kept the content. I can deal with a few seconds "warning" but I wouldn't want them to remove content in a remastered.

If they feel like they have to put a message like that, I'm going to give them props for not altering the games. Whatever you think of them, they clearly feel like they're sticking their necks out to present the games faithfully.

So I was a white western teenager who never complained about having a woman as my avatar in an adventure game, rather found the whole thing very cool and the character to be a badass beyond her huge knockers.

Guess what? It wasn't enough. The games are still offensive somehow, so even if I didn't feel my masculinity was threatened by Lara, I was a piece of shit for enjoying these games anyway.

I don't see an issue with this. It's a few second long screen that was placed to basically cover their ass in every shape and form. That's really it. Did they NEED to do it? No. But they probably did it just to be safe because crazy people exist everywhere. I don't blame them. Really not a big deal IMO.

I dunno what ya'll are up in arms about. It's infinitely better than them changing the game or removing content.

There was no need to apologize at all. The easily offended should be taught the lesson they can be very easily ignored.

Is anyone torn over whether this makes them more or less likely to purchase?
It is still a purchase for me even though I hate stuff like this. Someone forced a mandate for this to be put in there not the full team of developers. Some of the developers may agree or disagree with the warning message, but in the end the game is presented in its original form with a new coat of paint I have no issues with the game itself.
Now, if the the new Tomb Raider game with the unified Lara Croft is as cucked up as the original leaks with an emphasis on team work and modern DEI representation I won't be fooled by the pretty graphics and will skip the purchase of that one.

While a warning is stupid to begin with, my main gripe is them asserting outright to the player that it is "deeply harmful" and "inexcusable". That's for the player to decide.

If they regard it as deeply harmful and inexcusable they shouldn't be making money off it. It is neither of course, but I won't support their lack of consistency.

I can accept the still-unnecessary practice of adding disclaimers about standards being different and that certain things "may" cause offense. But I won't give someone my money and then be dictated to that what I'm consuming is harmful while they fill their coffers with that same money.

In fairness, they probably did this in anticipation of someone complaining about it.

And then what? There will always be obnoxious, nagging Karens who find fault with just about everything. Every company that includes a disclaimer to appease the Karens is making sure that these awful people will keep on nagging and whining. Just ignore these fucking idiots. That's the only thing that will shut them up eventually.

"The games in this collection contain offensive depictions of people and cultures rooted in racial and ethnic prejudices"
Am I reading it correct that they are suggesting "the original devs were racist"? Imagine one of them booting the remake up and seeing that (then deciding to sue) :messenger_halo:

If you must have a disclaimer, maybe "The original games in this collection are over 25 years old and contain depictions of people and cultures that some today may find offensive"?
