Tomb Raider PC Performance Thread

Okay strange. Randomly MSI afterburner is now showing sli working. Both my GPUs are using 1800mb and running 66 degrees and 55 degrees.

So I guess SLI is working with the new beta drivers. I did however manually add the game using control panel.

E: So AMD cards don't take all that much of a hit with TressFX?

Indeed, especially the 7XXX series, where you can even achieve a 60fps with TressFX.

Us mono GPU Nvidia users are not as fortunate, I will have to pass on this sadly.

Just to pick this back up - I disabled tessellation, and now I'm several hours in without any crashes or glitches. It was unplayable before in open areas. So: disable tessellation.

Regarding performance - I'm getting a solid 60 FPS in game on a single GTX 660. The benchmark at the beginning tells me 27 fps, however in game it's MUCH more smooth. (On highest settings).

Quoted for new page, but it's heartening that you can get a 60fps without SSAA or TressFX.

The game unlocks in two hours for me.

You'll have to pass because of one effect that you can toggle off?

By the way, this game looks amazing on highest mode. Really.

it boggles my mind how can be possible this port is so horrible, when you see games like dead space 3, some might say tomb raider looks better, but dead space 3 looks amazing on pc and it runs buttery smooth, i never had any drop on my frame rate on that game, i surely hope so this performance issues can be addressed as quick as possible

This also has much fancier graphic features. DS3 is a straight console port-em-up.

Anyone with SLI run benchmarks with tressfx on yet? I'm wondering if my dual 670s can handle it.

Also is the steam version unlocking at midnight? Or is it one of those 1pm est releases?

Ran it on Ultra at 1600p and was getting 10 FPS average. Shit is ridiculous.

Edit: Tried running it again and it was working better and the game hard-froze.

quick question as it's been a while since I've done the vpn trick...I'm unlocking it right now with an aussie server, but if I log back into steam with my regular ip at any point before in unlocks will it boot me or cause any problems?

I can't see any visual difference between having tessellation on or off. It's not used on the face, I think it's vegetation.

The upside of disabling tesselation is that I'm getting a fairly solid 60fps with TressFX/Ultimate/FXAA @1080P on a 680.

I'm pretty sure it's used on a ton of surfaces, rocks, wood, etc.

Zeth, I thought that but I've been comparing and, uh, I can't see anything.

Here's another screenshot with AA off completely and no tessellation. It also helps that the game appears to be great.

tessellation is used to give a more natural feel to objects, to eliminate the blocky faces and in this game case lara shoulders

The DOF effect in this game is really nice. That and the Lara model are the big standouts. They did a fantastic job on her model.

Hmm I'm not quite sure but if you don't want to risk anything, just go into offline mode until it's unlocked in yor region.

So disabled tesselation/Tress enabled/ 1600p, getting 44.1 FPS and with Tress disabled, getting 59.1.

With tesselation enabled but Tres disabled, getting 56.4.

Running 670 SLI and i7 2700k.

Still getting great performance with my setup at 1600p. My average FPS when playing is 63fps. Would have done PNG but imgur compresses anything over 1mb if you don't have a pro account. =/

Screengrab kind of shitty too, don't really know how to properly do it. Oh well.

Here is a direct link to a better non-compressed version.

This game seems really unstable for me.

I5-750 @ 4.3
670 OC'd
8GB Ram

It's crashed quite a lot -- ever since the radio bit, also the SS AA when switching from FXAA causes some really weird graphical glitches.

I've managed to get a decent frame rate with TressFX enabled, I have no idea what High Precision does, but I turned that off and it gave back about 15 FPS. SSAO to normal also gives a couple frames.

Looking forward to a performance patch. Luckily, the TressFX for the most part looks wonky so I don't mind playing without it. But there are a couple moments where it looks really, really good.

ok so the game is just going to a black screen when I try to start it. I logged into steam offline, pressed play, set up a few graphics options and it just launches to a black screen and I have to go ctrl alt del to close it in the task manager.

You should try turning tessellation off and report back whether that fixes your crashing or not.

3 questions:

Are the graphics better than Uncharted 2-3? Does Lara look better than Drake graphically?

When are we going to get this game on Origin? I haven't even received a key

I think so. But I'm probably biased, because I'm gaming at a much higher resolution. Going from 720p to 1600p IMO is a big jump. But in terms of the effects and stuff, I won't answer that one.

Your game is stable ? No crashes/freezes ?

I had about 20 minutes before I had to be at work, and half that time was spent unlocking the game with a god awfully slow VPN connection, so I'll report more on it later. I'm still on the 314.07 drivers, so I'd assume it's probably buggy like everyone else's.

Just saw this mentioned on Ars:

Q: What are your plans for widescreen in Tomb Raider?

“We support AMD Eyefinity as well as NVIDIA Surround to allow you to connect multiple screens and create very wide displays.”
Multiple monitor support? Anyone try this?

Call me crazy, but I'm also not seeing any visual difference with Tessellation on. I do get a huge performance boost though.

I'm running at 1920x1080 with FXAA and everything on max except TressFX. Getting 20-25 FPS with Tessellation on and around 45 with it off.

i5 2600k, ATI 5850, 8gb memory.

I just realized my code was available on Amazon. I guess I can preload it which is awesome. I'm hoping it works well with my 6870 (I know I won't be maxing anything).

1.About the same. On pc maxed it looks incredible, but there are a few instances where the vistas are clearly static image shots that could do for better resolution. But all in all it's about on par.

2. In my opinion, her character model does looks better. All the cuts and bruises look painful as hell.

3. Don't know about Origin. I went with Steam as I always do, unless the game is exclusive to Origin.

So I've had 3 crashes.

Everything max on an i7-920@4Ghz/GTX 680(on latest official drivers, non-beta)/12gb ram.

1. First time starting up, played until the cave exit. Crash.

2. Turned off Tessellation, played for an hour or so and leave a temple, crash.

3. Finish the radio tower, crash.

After about an hour of game time it seems to crash. Performance is solid at 60 fps until a sudden crash.

6850 here, gets stuttery on close when Tress is on, quite smooth-ish during normal gameplay. Awesome game though :)

How much stutter, like 10-15fps? I have the same card so I'm interested.

The closer the camera is in, the worse it gets - during the in-game cinematics it goes down to about 10-20 fps (just guessing here) when there are close-ups, during normal gameplay it's barely a difference compared to TressFX off. I'm far from being any kind of expert, but I get the feeling a bit of optimizing can help a lot here.

Running on said 6850, Phenom X4 BE and 8 Gigabytes (dammit) of RAM, and I honestly did not expect this running so well on high + TFX. Cinematic stuttering is kind of annoying, mostly since the difference is so harsh, but it's far from game breaking :)

Oh, and I had some crashes, too - 2 times, both during cinematics, both no problem the second time through.

!

Amazing port then! Not sure what everyone is bitching about

Its been running good for me with everything maxed out.
I'll get a split second chug here and there but it's always in a spot that seems like it was loading more than anything. So I wouldn't really blame the game much for that.

One thing I noticed in my brief time with the game was that I couldn't choose a resolution higher than 1920x1080. Anyone else have that problem, or was that just me?

I could pick a higher resolution, but if I did it went in to fullscreen windowed and I couldn't change it back to fullscreen.

The game ran great until I hit a pretty big open area after a semi-big plot point. Performance suddenly went from a near-constant 60 to 20.

Keep playing, it gets better. But yeah, this one needs a beefy rig in certain areas. (That said the performance benchmark option on the front screen gives an average FPS about half what I see during the actual game).

I've been playing for a few hours. I got better after the "scenic view" section of that map, but still weird.

Looks like the areas with a lot of geometry are the ones that gives the biggest FPS hit.

Is Exclusive Fullscreen windowed fullscreen?

Looks like it according to this.

Nixxes:
It's an option that was added to provide a smoother multi-tasking experience. ALT-TAB-ing in and out of the game is much faster without running exclusive, as is switching between fullscreen and windowed, and pop-ups from other applications like a messenger app or e-mail interact better with the game. It's much like running in windowed mode, just without window borders and taskbar.

The advantage of running exclusive is that it can result in slightly better performance, and some hardware features (like AMD HD3D and crossfire) only work in exclusive mode.

Exclusive mode also is the only mode that can actually change display resolution. If you change display resolution when not running exclusive the game will render to the chosen resolution, but will then stretch it to the desktop resolution.
