Tomb Raider PC Performance Thread

Ugh, I am getting an error every time right near where you first get on the island and find the walkie-talkie. The game shuts down every single time. I am on an 680 btw. Anyone else having this issue?

As reported multiple times, tessellation seems to introduce crashes, have you tried turning it off ?

Waiting this game for months and then it releases with game breaking crashing all the time. I don't want to play this without all the graphical treats turned down for stability :( Heck, I bought the PC-version for a reason.

GTX680 here.

It looks like Origin are finally dealing with the preloading via VPN issue after Crysis 3 - neither SimCity nor Tomb Raider are available yet, by the looks of it.

How often does it crash and where?

I have 680 SLI and just got out of the cave, and been walking around the island. Haven't had a crash yet.

Did your crashes start later on?

EDIT: I haven't tried the new drivers. But I guess SLI doesn't even work on this game on the old drivers. So technically im using one GTX 680 like you. Hence why I was asking about the crashes.

Hopefully this game has a better outcome than Batman:AC in regards to DX11 tesselation. To this day I cannot play Batman with DX11 turned on without getting major performance hitches and crashes.

For me (670, a card that is also having problems) I'll be wandering along and the screen will go crazy, like a numbers tv station from a bad horror movie. This will last for a few moments and go away or remain permanently. The icons for objectives (and the xp meter) appear as normal.

Then I've had one hard CTD.

You are Good to go. I think your cards is only maxing 50-60% each.

Edit: if only one works then its a bit strange.

Damn. Okay so it seems like the crashes are happening after the beginning? Once you leave the cave. I guess I'll brace for the worst.

Anyone know why my GPU seemingly stops working after about half an hour of play? TV just shows no signal.

I suspected overheating but i don't think that's the problem as i've just been on Skyrim and GTA4 for a good while with no issues.

Disable TressFx as it make your GPU run too hot.

Skyrim and GTA4 are DX9 games. Tomb Raider stresses GPUs considerably more.

I don't have TressFX running.

I'll give it another go then, saving the temperature logs from MSI and see what i can find.

On a GTX560 btw

What drivers are you using ? Disable tessellation also, there is something wrong with the VRAM usage.

Does the TressFX hair get wet?

It looks like it to me. The hair gets darker and has a different shine to it:

Also, I will say that although the Tress FX does have the hair hover over the shoulders, it's not as noticeable as it was in the benchmark.

I can definitely confirm this, I just played over an hour witthout tesselation, no crashes. with tessellation it crashes within 60 seconds.
too bad it looks bad witthout tesselation

I just got the steam version to unlock using a Japanese VPN and got the following FPS on the in Game benchmark @ 1920x1080:

Ultimate Preset: Everything maxed (except FXAA and Double Buffer V-Sync) w/ Tress FX on:
Min: 25.2 Max: 50.5 Average: 42.4

Ultra Preset: Everything still maxed (except FXAA and Triple Buffer V-Sync) w/ Tress FX off:
Min: 31.1 Max: 60.3 Average: 58.4

My system:
AMD FX 8350
16 GB ram
Sapphire 2GB 7870 XT LE (Tahiti chipset) OCd to 1100/1500

The benchmark seemed to run smooth with both sets of settings, but it does run faster without Tress FX off. In my opinion, the Tress FX looks really un-natural.

Played the game for a bit over an hour and got past the deer part.

So far performance has been good. I'm getting 60fps on a regular basis (with Tress FX on) and when it dips blow that, it's usually in the 50's with very few exceptions. The dip it noticeable but if the entire game runs this well throughout, I'll be a happy camper.

PS: The graphics are fantastic, even with just FXAA.

310.90 - Tessellation wasn't enabled either.

Here's the MSI logs the last second before it died again, if anyone can make something from it.

Temperature: 78.000 Fan Speed: 98.000 GPU Usage: 98.000

No i didn't think so either, i'll update the drivers... but i don't really want to be trying again too often, i'm sure it can't be good for it!

Awesome shots, love the first one.

Try the new beta drivers or the 314.07, they are more stable.

I updated to the new nvidia beta drivers. Sli still not working. Am I supposed to manually add the game to SLI in the control panel? Or is SLI still not working.

glad to hear that, what are your specs and are you using nvidia latest beta's?

What is your core voltage at? Some of the 500 series are under clocked which can cause crashes. I had crashing issues in some games with my 580 but upping the voltage fixed it.

Anyone know what time to expect this to unlock in North America? Midnight EST?

I'm running an i5 2500k @ 4.2ghz, Radeon 7970 @ 1ghz, and 16GB of RAM, so I'm hoping to max it out and get a decent frame rate at 1920x1200.

Phenom X4 955 Black Edition
Sapphire HD 7970
8GB Ram
Hahaha, nothing like a good ol' CPU bottleneck.

When I first bought my 590 two years ago, I was on a Phenom II X4 955 (non-BE). After a couple months of that bullshit I upgraded to an i7 and my performance doubled or even tripled in most games.

StarCraft II (notorious for preferring Intel CPUs to AMD) maxed out went from 30-40fps to 100+.

Okay - I'm on a GTX 660, and just to report this game is unstable to the point of being unplayable. In particular, the bit outside the cave (as other have mentions) = crash city. Tried without AA. Going to try disabling tessellation now.

1000, seems suitable to me?

yeah that was what mine was too. Do some googling to see what others do for that specific card. I have my 580 at 1075, and it's helped sooo much. Also I saw you talking about temps, I just use the on screen display in Afterburner, that way you can monitor fps, temps, and vram in game. I use "3" on the number pad to toggle it on and off.

A 670 can barely handle it at 2560X1440. Framerate is all over the place but stays above 30 probably 95% of the time. With everything but AA and TressFX at ultimate.

Was getting maybe 20 max with the TressFX, but it looked pretty awful.

Turned off Tessellation after the crash at a cave. Played for a while, got to a part after exiting a temple and crashed again. Got to play a solid hour and a half though. Hopefully these crashes get resolved soon.

That shot almost looks like it has it off.

I'm running this at 1080p with:

FX-8350 @ 4.4ghz
7870 2GB @ 1175/1375mhz

Here's what I got on Ultimate:

Here's what I got with TressFX turned off:

The second one is how I've been playing it and it rarely drops below 60fps. It looks amazing.
